Bangalore to Maldives: the direct flight and which resorts you reach the same day
One airline flies Bengaluru to Malé non-stop: IndiGo, once a day. From late October to late March it lands at Velana at 15:00. From late March to late October it lands at 14:15. That 45-minute shift decides which islands you reach on your first evening.
Most islands do not care when you land. Seaplane islands do, because seaplanes fly in daylight only, and the winter landing leaves them almost no room. The list at the foot of this page sorts every island by how much margin the Bengaluru flight gives it.
The direct flight from Bangalore to Malé
IndiGo 6E1127 leaves Kempegowda Terminal 2 every day. In the winter schedule it departs at 13:25 and lands at Velana at 15:00. In the summer schedule it departs at 12:50 and lands at 14:15. The flight takes about two hours.
The return, 6E1128, leaves Malé at 16:05 in winter and 15:15 in summer.
Two things catch people out. The Maldives runs 30 minutes behind India, so the times on a booking screen look odd. And the airport is Velana International, renamed from Malé International in 2017. Some booking sites still show the old name.
Why the landing time matters: seaplanes stop at dusk
Every resort sets its own latest landing time for a same-day transfer. Speedboats and domestic flights run after dark, so resorts reached that way set cut-offs a mid-afternoon flight never troubles. Seaplanes are different. Trans Maldivian Airways, the largest seaplane operator, asks international arrivals to land by 15:30, and many resorts set 15:00 to leave time for immigration and bags.
In summer, a 14:15 landing gives a seaplane island somewhere between 45 and 75 minutes. In winter, a 15:00 landing gives it between nothing and half an hour. Winter is also the dry season, when most people want to travel.
That sorts every island into one of three groups.
Speedboat and domestic-flight islands: no clock
A resort speedboat belongs to that resort, carries only its guests and goes straight to the island. It leaves when your flight lands, at midnight if it has to. Most of North and South Malé Atoll is reached this way. Islands in the far north and far south reached by domestic flight and speedboat are just as relaxed, because those aircraft fly after dark and some hold cut-offs as late as ten at night. From Bengaluru, these islands work all year, and a delay is an inconvenience rather than a lost night.
Seaplane islands with a second route
Some seaplane islands sit within speedboat reach of a domestic airport. If the flight runs late, the resort can bring guests in by domestic flight and speedboat instead. You lose the view from the seaplane. You keep the night. Few people know these islands have a fallback, and some of them hold it open well into the evening.
Seaplane islands with no second route
Seaplane only, and nothing else that afternoon. In summer you will almost always make it. In winter, on the direct flight, plan for a night near the airport and the first seaplane next morning, with the first resort night going unused. This is the group worth sorting out before you book the flight rather than at the seaplane counter.

The early route through Colombo
SriLankan Airlines flies Bengaluru to Colombo in the small hours, leaving at around half past three on several days a week. It connects to UL101, which lands at Velana at 08:15.
An 08:15 landing makes every seaplane island easy, including the far-northern and far-southern ones, and gives you the whole afternoon on the island rather than an arrival at dusk.
The price is a 3am departure and a change of plane. On a honeymoon that is a hard first morning. On a winter trip built around one particular seaplane island, it may be the only way to arrive the same day. Days of operation change by season, so check the connection on your own dates before booking it.
Going home is the part people plan badly
The return leaves Malé mid-afternoon, which sounds generous. On a seaplane island, the departure is timed around the seaplane rotations rather than your preference, and you usually leave the island several hours before the flight. Your last day is breakfast, a swim and a bag by the door. The winter departure at 16:05 is kinder here than the summer one at 15:15.
A speedboat island gives back most of that morning, because the boat leaves when you need it to. On a four-night trip, that is a real difference.

Who the direct flight isn't for
A family with a two-year-old, travelling in winter and set on a seaplane island. The 15:00 landing, a terminal wait and a small child make a long afternoon, and a missed connection makes it longer. Seaplane baggage allowances are also tighter than an international ticket.
Anyone with five nights or fewer whose heart is set on a seaplane-only island between late October and late March. That combination needs the Colombo routing, or flying a day early and spending the first night near the airport by choice rather than by accident.
