Worth choosing the resort for. One or two caveats on entry point or current.
The reef runs almost all the way round, as close as ten feet off the sand in places, and guests report being able to circle the island in the water. Turtles, blacktips, eagle rays, stingrays and octopus are all regular, and there is a shark nursery near one of the restaurants. The coral is the weak part: bleaching is reported plainly, and at least one guest found only the eastern side worth swimming. Snorkel gear is charged here rather than free. Beach villas put you at the water and garden villas do not, so ask which you are being quoted.
Getting there
Land at Velana after 15:00 and the last seaplane of the day will have gone, which means a night in Malé before you reach the island.
