Good marine life over coral that has not recovered well. You get in from the jetty steps or the walkway into the coral garden, a sheltered shallow area ringed by water villas, rather than off the sand, because the island sits on a wide lagoon table. Blacktips and the two resident hawksbill turtles are close to a certainty, and guests also report eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse and big schooling fish. Snorkelling stays inside the marker buoys. Gear is free and the weekly marine biologist talk is included, but the guided two-site reef trip is charged. Water villas on the coral garden sit closest.

Amazing destination for honeymoon
We had the most wonderful stay at COMO Maalifushi for our honeymoon, and it truly exceeded our expectations.

About the resort
COMO Maalifushi is the only resort in Thaa Atoll, an hour south of Malé by seaplane, and the quietest island COMO runs. Every villa on this page has its own pool.
Three nights for two in a Beach Suite with Private Pool comes with half board, the return seaplane and every tax inside the figure.
What you pay
Pick your dates, a villa and a meal plan and the price is the whole stay for two: the villa, your meals, the return seaplane and every tax, green tax included. Nothing more is payable at the resort for those.
Half board is breakfast and a three-course lunch or dinner each day. Full board adds the other meal, about seven per cent on three nights.
The seaplane is the big fixed part. It is the same on three nights as on seven, which is why a short stay here reads dear per night against a speedboat island. Five or seven nights spreads it.
An all-inclusive plan and the two, three and four bedroom villas are sold too. They are not priced on this page, but we can book them.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa for two, the meals on your plan, the return seaplane, access to COMO Shambhala with its steam room, sauna, gym and six yoga classes a week, non-motorised water sports, snorkel gear, and every Maldivian tax including green tax.
Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, drinks, spa treatments, excursions, the compulsory New Year's Eve gala dinner, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Anyone landing at Malé in the evening. The seaplane flies in daylight only and the last take-off is 16:30, and there is no boat this far south. Land late and you spend a night in the city first.
Anyone who wants somewhere else to go. COMO Maalifushi is alone in its atoll, so there is no neighbouring island to hop to. The quiet is the point. From roughly March to October the surf brings a livelier crowd.
Before you book
The festive fortnight is not priced on this page. The plan drops to breakfast only, the New Year's Eve gala is US$700 per adult and compulsory, and nobody checks out on 30 or 31 December.
Each villa takes four at most. Two children under 12 stay free in their parents' villa on the same meal plan, and you can pair a stay here with COMO Cocoa Island on one trip.

COMO Maalifushi in Thaa Atoll was quiet elegance when we visited mid-January 2017. The water villas are massive, with plenty of room to breathe and spend slow afternoons splashing in the private pool. The food was genuinely out of this world, fresh and inventive across every meal. How do I get to COMO Maalifushi?
By seaplane. COMO Maalifushi is in Thaa Atoll, a 60-minute Manta Air flight from Velana International Airport, and there is no boat this far south. Seaplanes fly in daylight only and the last take-off is 16:30, so an evening landing means a night in Malé first. The return seaplane is in every price on this page.
What villa categories are there?
Four one-bedroom categories, all with a private pool: the Beach Suite (101 m²), Water Suite (107 m²), Beach Villa (116 m²) and Water Villa (120 m²), each for up to four guests. There are also two-bedroom beach and water villas, the COMO Villa and the four-bedroom COMO Residence, which we price on request.
What meal plans can I choose?
Half board is breakfast plus a three-course lunch or dinner each day, and it comes with every villa outside the festive period. Full board adds the other meal. Both are priced on this page. Meals are at Madi or Thila, and on half board a credit of US$115 per adult applies if you dine at Tai.
What dining options are available at the resort?
The resort has three dining venues. Tai is an overwater Japanese restaurant serving sushi and sashimi with sunset cocktails. Madi offers light Mediterranean, Indonesian and Thai-influenced dishes from breakfast to late evening, including the COMO Shambhala Kitchen menu. Thila Bar is the relaxed pool and ocean bar. In-villa dining carries a US$25 tray charge.
What is COMO Shambhala Retreat?
The resort's wellness centre, with overwater treatment rooms, a gym, an open-air yoga pavilion, a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Access to the facilities and six scheduled yoga classes a week are included for every guest. Treatments are charged separately.
Is COMO Maalifushi suitable for families?
Yes. Two children under 12 stay free in their parents' villa on the same meal plan, and every one-bedroom villa takes four. There is a kids' club and babysitting. Larger families should look at the two-bedroom villas, which take six. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will match the villa.
What water activities are available?
The dive and watersports centre offers scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing at the Farms break, sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Non-motorised water sports and snorkel gear are included. Guided trips such as sunset cruises, dolphin watching, fishing and sandbank picnics are charged.
