Thin
This one depends entirely on where you sleep, and even then it is thin. Beach entry is rocky, with coral stones and seaweed underfoot, so sea shoes are not optional. Some water villa guests find coral a couple of metres from the steps, and others in the same season report almost nothing around the resort at all. The current runs harder at the Manta jetty than at the Dolphin jetty. The good reef is a complimentary speedboat ride away and it is genuinely good, with sharks and turtles. Treat this as an island where the snorkelling is a boat trip.

About the resort
VARU by Atmosphere sits in North Malé Atoll, forty minutes from Velana International Airport by the resort's speedboat, and the boat is in the price. It is a green island with a wide mix of villas, from simple beach villas to family residences, and a generous all-inclusive plan.
There are 111 villas: beach villas with and without a pool, water villas over the lagoon, two-bedroom beach villas with a pool, and the Majlis Residences for bigger families. Every stay is on the Varu Plan, which includes two speciality meals, a spa treatment and two snorkelling trips a day.
What you pay
The price on this page is for two adults, for four nights, on the Varu Plan, with the speedboat both ways and every Maldivian tax inside it. Four nights is the shortest stay priced here. Three nights can be booked, but it carries a supplement, so each night comes to more.
The price moves a lot through the year: Christmas and New Year are the dearest, January to early April comes next, and the lowest figures fall in the months from mid April to October. The two-bedroom villa and the residences are priced for the villa and sleep four. Christmas and New Year carry no compulsory gala dinner.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa for four nights; breakfast, lunch and dinner at Lime and Chili; premium spirits, wines, beers and cocktails at the bars and speciality restaurants; a minibar restocked daily with wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks; two meals each at Kaagé, Nū or Charcoal.
Also in the price: one 45-minute spa treatment for each adult; two snorkelling trips a day to nearby reefs; a sunset fishing trip and a sunset or stargazing cruise each; windsurfing, paddleboards, canoes and water bikes; the gym, tennis and the kids' club; the return speedboat; and every Maldivian tax.
Not in the price: in-villa dining, the Teppanyaki counter, the wine cellar dinners, diving and motorised water sports, other excursions, your international flights, travel insurance, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Snorkellers who want a reef off their own steps: the reef around the island is thin and the beach entry is rocky, so pack reef shoes and use the snorkelling boat instead. Some guests find the main buffet weaker than the speciality restaurants, and paid excursions are dear because outside boats cannot collect guests.
Before you book
Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at noon, and the Varu Plan stops at 11:00 on your last day. Honeymooners married within the past year get a decorated bed and bath, a beach dinner, a cake and a parting gift, on stays of four nights or more. Bring a copy of your wedding certificate.
Families in the two-bedroom villas and the residences should ask us about the children-stay-free offer. A nanny travelling with a family in a Majlis Residence stays free on the plan. You can split four nights between two villa types, two nights each. Send us your flight numbers and we will pass them to the resort.

Where is VARU by Atmosphere, and how do I get there?

What does the Varu Plan include?

Is VARU by Atmosphere good for families?
Yes. There is a kids' club, and the two-bedroom beach villas and the Majlis Residences are priced for four people and sleep up to six. Is it a good choice for a honeymoon?
