Exceptional
The reputation holds. Guests who have been to many islands call this the best reef they have swum, with reef fish in volume, blacktip and grey reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, moray eels and octopus reported daily rather than as luck. There are several shore entry points as well as the jetty, and lifeguards are stationed along the snorkelling route and will advise you on the current. The caveats are all about getting in rather than the reef: parts of the shoreline are rocky with coral fragments, entry quality varies sharply from villa to villa, and erosion works are visible.

About the resort
OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO sits on the outer edge of North Malé Atoll, fifty minutes from Velana International Airport by speedboat. People come for the house reef, which is among the best you can swim to from a beach anywhere near Malé, with lifeguards along the snorkelling route.
The island is small and green, with beach villas among the trees, lagoon villas half over the water, and two rows of water villas with pools. Every stay is on the Oblu Island Plan, an all-inclusive plan that suits couples and families who would rather spend their money on the reef than on a butler.
What you pay
The price on this page is for two adults, for four nights, on the Oblu Island Plan, with the speedboat both ways and every Maldivian tax inside it. Four nights is the shortest stay priced here. Three nights can be booked, but it carries a supplement and no offer, so each night comes to more.
The Deluxe Beach Villa is the entry point, and the pool villas sit only a little above it on most dates. The two-bedroom family villa is priced for the villa and sleeps four. The suites are sold on request. Christmas and New Year carry no compulsory gala dinner.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa for four nights; breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Spice, with beer, wine and soft drinks at meals; spirits, cocktails, beer and wine at the Raa Bandhi bar; a minibar restocked daily with two beers, soft drinks and water.
Also in the price: one dinner at Just Grill or Raga Route; a morning line-fishing trip and a sunset dhoni ride each; snorkelling gear, kayaks and paddleboards; the gym, the kids' club and the adults-only pool; the return speedboat; and every Maldivian tax.
Not in the price: the spa, which is charged in full; in-villa dining; the premium drinks list; diving and other excursions; your international flights; travel insurance; Indian TCS; and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Anyone after polished luxury: this is a relaxed four-star island with no room service and a buggy that does not run all night. Getting into the sea is easy from some villas and rocky from others, and parts of the shoreline carry sea defences against erosion. The resort groups arrivals onto its boats, so allow for a wait at the airport of up to two hours.
Before you book
Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at noon. Honeymooners married within the past year get a decorated bed, a cake and a parting gift, and water villa guests add a floating breakfast, on stays of four nights or more. Bring a copy of your wedding certificate.
If an easy walk into the sea matters, tell us and we will ask the resort for a villa with a sandy entry. You can split four nights between two villa types, two nights each. Outside boats cannot collect guests. Send us your flight numbers and we will pass them to the resort.
