Strong
Strong marine life here, but the reef is a swim rather than a step. From the beach it is roughly 150 metres out and often on the far side from your villa, while the Overwater Sunrise Villas put you onto it by ladder, which is the category worth paying for. Guests report blacktips, turtles, eagle rays, porcupine rays and an unusual number of octopus in shallow water. Follow the marked buoys and stop at the last one, because beyond it is the seaplane channel. Current runs hard at high tide off the overwater villas, and the sunrise side is the calmer choice.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Le Méridien Maldives Resort. From start to finish, the service was exceptional, with the staff being warm, attentive, and always happy to help.

We had an all-around successful stay! The hotel is in a dreamlike location, is well-maintained, clean, and leaves nothing to be desired! Culinary-wise, it could not be better!

About the resort
Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa is 35 minutes north of Velana by seaplane, in Lhaviyani Atoll, and it prices its overwater villas only a little above its beach villas. Here the lagoon is a small step, not a splurge.
It is a mid-size island with plenty going on: seven places to eat and drink, a kids' club that runs daily, a dive centre and a padel court. The resort takes its footprint seriously. Solar panels cover about 40% of daytime power, and The Greenhouse, a 430 m² hydroponic farm, grows produce on the island.
A resident marine biologist runs the Marine Conservation Hub, with guided coral snorkels, a seagrass session and a sunset dolphin cruise.
What you pay
Pick your dates and a villa and the price is the whole stay for two: the villa, breakfast and dinner daily, the return seaplane, and every Maldivian tax, green tax included.
The earliest dates on this page are the cheapest, and only just. The price steps up a few per cent after them and then holds flat for the rest of the year, festive dates apart. There is no cheaper green season to wait for here.
Going over the water adds surprisingly little. The Sunrise Overwater Villa is a few per cent above a Beach Villa on three nights, and the Sunset Overwater Villa adds the same again.
A private pool is the real jump. From November a Beach Villa with Garden Pool is about a tenth more than a Beach Villa, and a Beach Villa with Pool or an Overwater Villa with Pool about a third more. Four adults pay less in two Beach Villas than in a 2 Bedroom Beach Villa with Pool. Take the bigger villa to be under one roof.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa for two, breakfast and dinner every day, the return shared seaplane, and every Maldivian tax including green tax. Up to two children under twelve stay and eat free in your villa, on your meal plan.
Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, lunch, drinks, the spa, diving and excursions, your children's seaplane and green tax, the compulsory New Year's Eve gala, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Anyone landing at Velana late in the afternoon. The seaplane flies in daylight only, and you must be checked in at the seaplane counter by 15:30. Land later and you spend a night in Malé first.
Couples after a hideaway. With 134 villas and a busy programme, this island is sociable, not secluded.
Families with three children. Only two children stay free in any villa. A third is charged for every night.
Before you book
The festive fortnight is not priced on this page. The New Year's Eve gala dinner is compulsory and charged on top, and stays touching 27 December to 3 January need five nights. We can still book it.
There is only one 3 Bedroom Thilamaafushi Beach Villa. It is booked on request, so ask us early.

How do I get to Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa?

How many villas does the resort have?
Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa has 134 villas, from Beach Villas and Lagoon Villas to Sunrise and Sunset Overwater Villas, villas with their own pool, and two- and three-bedroom villas for families and groups. Villas range in size from 82 m² to 280 m². There is only one three-bedroom villa, so ask us early if you want it.
What dining options are available at the resort?
The resort offers seven distinct dining venues: Tabemasu (Japanese), Velaa Bar + Grill (poolside steakhouse), Riviera (Spanish beachside), La Vie (ocean-view bar), Waves Café (mindful eating), Latitude (Le Méridien Hub café), and Turquoise (all-day international dining). Half board, the plan priced on this page, covers breakfast and dinner daily. Lunch and drinks are charged on top.
What sustainability initiatives does the resort have?
Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa runs a 569 kWp solar system that covers about 40% of daytime power, a reverse osmosis plant for fresh drinking water, daily composting of up to 700 kg of food waste and rainwater harvesting of over 2 million litres a year. The Greenhouse, a 430 m² hydroponic farm, grows produce for the kitchens. The resort holds Green Mark Gold Plus certification and 97% Green Globe compliance.
What marine conservation activities are available?
The resort's Marine Conservation Hub offers a range of activities led by a resident marine biologist, including guided snorkelling coral awareness sessions, the Thilamaafushi Marine Masters programme for all ages, seagrass education experiences, and a Marine Biologist Guided Dolphin Cruise at sunset.
Is the resort suitable for families with children?
Yes. Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa has a dedicated Kids Hub, a family swimming pool, the Thilamaafushi Marine Masters programme for children and teens, and The Greenhouse Kids Masterclass. The kids' club runs daily with crafts, games and nature activities. Up to two children under twelve stay and eat free in your villa on your meal plan.
What water sports and activities are available?
The Waves Lifestyle Hub runs the watersports, including snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding, and there is a padel court on land. The Sub Oceanic Dive Centre offers guided dives and PADI courses for every level.
