The largest lagoon in the Maldives, and the villas are built over sand rather than reef on purpose. It is stunning to look at and the swimming is warm, safe and shallow, but there is no reef off your steps, and guests who came for snorkelling say so bluntly. The house reef is a short boat ride, complimentary and daily, and the coral out there is healthy. Rays, turtles and baby sharks do drift through the lagoon. If the reef is the point of the trip, Soneva Fushi is the sister island to ask us about.

About the resort
Soneva Jani can be reached after dark. The seaplane stops at sunset, but you can land in Malé as late as 19:10, take the short domestic flight to Maafaru, and a ten-minute speedboat has you on the island that night. For evening arrivals from India, that saves a night in Malé.
The lagoon is the largest in the Maldives, and every villa has its own pool, most with a slide straight into the water. Soneva now runs Soneva Jani as its family island, and children under twelve stay and eat free.
What you pay
Pick a villa and your dates and the price covers the villa for the number of guests it names, the return seaplane for all of them, and every Maldivian tax, green tax included. Four nights is the minimum. The earliest dates on this page are half board with a green-season discount already applied. After them the price is bed and breakfast.
The Maafaru route is also cheaper, by about seven per cent on five nights for two in a 1 Bedroom Water Reserve. Tell us which you want.
Book sixty days ahead on the high-season dates and Soneva takes ten per cent off. It turns on the day you book, so the prices on this page are before it. We apply it. Fifteen nights or more earns thirty per cent instead.
Soneva Unlimited is a large addition on seven nights for two. It covers every drink, in-villa dining, the spa and most experiences, diving included. It pays on a heavy drinks and spa week, not otherwise. Ask us for the figure on your dates.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa, the return seaplane for everyone it is priced for, breakfast daily, and dinner as well on the earliest dates, the daily boat to the house reef, and every Maldivian tax including green tax.
Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, every drink including water and soft drinks at meals, in-villa dining, the spa, excursions and diving, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Snorkellers who want coral off their deck. The villas sit over sand on purpose, so there is no reef at your steps. The house reef is a short boat ride, free and daily, and the coral out there is healthy.
Anyone who needs a doctor on the island. There is a nurse around the clock, with the atoll hospital ten minutes away by speedboat and an airlift to Malé for anything serious.
Before you book
Children under twelve stay and eat free, two in a one or two bedroom villa and four in anything larger. You pay only their green tax and their transfer seats. Tell us their ages and we will have the slide rules confirmed before you book.
Seaplane luggage is 25 kg per person including hand luggage. The last seaplane out leaves between 16:00 and 17:00, and the island keeps its own clock, one hour ahead of Malé.
The festive period is not priced on this page. Seven nights is the minimum, nobody checks out on 31 December or 1 January, and the Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners are compulsory. We can still book it.

Soneva Jani has a very distinctive personality. Our villa had this beautiful, almost handcrafted feel, with whitewashed wood, natural textures, plenty of space and a private pool with the lagoon right outside. The architecture is playful too—the curved staircase and slide were impossible to ignore! Where is Soneva Jani located?
Soneva Jani is in Noonu Atoll, in the north of the Maldives. The island covers 150 acres plus five islets and sits on the largest lagoon in the Maldives. The villas are built over sand on purpose, so the water is warm, shallow and calm, and the coral is a short, free daily boat ride away. The island keeps its own clock, one hour ahead of Malé.
How do I get to Soneva Jani?
The seaplane from Velana International Airport takes about 40 minutes and is in every price on this page. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so your international flight has to land in Malé by 15:30. The other route is a short domestic flight to Maafaru and a ten-minute speedboat to Soneva Jani. It takes arrivals in Malé up to 19:10 and is cheaper. What villa categories are available?
Fourteen kinds of villa are priced on this page, from the 1 Bedroom Water Retreat and the Beach Hideaway up to the 5 Bedroom Water Retreat. Every villa at Soneva Jani has its own pool, almost all have a slide into the lagoon, and several have a roof over the master bed that rolls back for the stars. Children under twelve stay and eat free: two in a one or two bedroom villa, four in anything larger. Four nights is the minimum.
Do the villas have water slides?
Yes. Almost every villa at Soneva Jani has its own slide from the villa into the lagoon. The Beach Hideaway is the one without. Tell us the ages of any children travelling and we will have the slide rules confirmed before you book.
What dining experiences are available?
Soneva Jani has reworked its restaurants recently. The current list is Chill (all day), Director's Cut (Japanese over the lagoon) with Teppanyaki and the Irori Grill, Crab Shack (seafood), Primitive (cooked over open fire), SAJI (Indonesian), The Lagoon Club (international and Nikkei), Asian Kitchen in the Garden, and Tipsy, which delivers cocktails by tuk tuk. The Chocolate, Cheese and Ice Cream Rooms are open around the clock. Drinks are charged on every plan except Soneva Unlimited.
What is Soneva Soul?
Soneva Soul is the spa and wellness centre at Soneva Jani, with Ayurveda, a Pilates studio and specialist therapists. Spa treatments are not in the price on this page. Soneva Unlimited covers unlimited spa treatments, apart from treatments in your villa, and we can run the sum both ways for you.
What is The Den?
The Den is the children's club at Soneva Jani, for ages four to seventeen, across more than 1,500 m². It has a zipline, a pirate ship, a cinema, a Lego room, a music room, a kids' kitchen and a swim-up mocktail bar, with childminders throughout. Under fours get one-to-one babysitting instead, which is charged on every plan. Tell us early and we will have it booked before you travel.
What ocean and nature activities are available?
Diving and snorkelling across Noonu Atoll, freediving, dolphin cruises, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and private yacht voyages aboard Soneva in Aqua. There are open-air tennis and padel courts, a run club with 3 km, 5 km and 8 km island paths, and Cinema Paradiso, the open-air cinema under the stars. One thing to know before you book: there is no coral at your steps here, because the lagoon is sand. Snorkelling is a boat trip, and the resort runs a free one every day.
When is manta ray season at Soneva Jani?
Manta season around Soneva Jani is roughly June to November, and Soneva says the wetter months are the better ones, because the plankton brings the mantas in. That makes the green season a real argument for this island rather than a compromise. Sightings depend on conditions, and manta trips are excursions charged on top of the price on this page.

Soneva built the villas over sand rather than reef on purpose, which is why the water looks the way it does and why the snorkelling is not where you think it is. Everything else on this island is arranged around slowness.
