Little or nothing to snorkel off the beach. Some islands in this band run a free boat to a reef — the note below says whether this one does.
Fari Islands is a man-made archipelago, so there is no natural house reef ringing the island. The sunrise side is calm and shallow with fish and small reef sharks off the villas, which suits nervous swimmers and children. For actual coral you take a boat, roughly twenty minutes. Ask for a sunrise villa if you want to snorkel from your steps at all.
Getting there
Transfers run around the clock, so a late landing does not cost you a night in Malé.
Shared luxury speedboat, running around the clock, and the return trip is inside the price. Two-bedroom villas and above are upgraded to a shared yacht on stays of four nights or more.

A day here, honestly
The day of the week sets the shape of your stay here, which is true of almost nowhere else we sell. The excursion programme runs to a fixed weekly rota, so the trip you want decides which days you should be on the island. Turtle snorkelling goes Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The shark and manta dive goes Monday and Thursday only. The sunset cruise sails Wednesday and Saturday. Book a Tuesday to Friday and you will miss two of the three.

Day 1, arriving
A shared luxury speedboat, forty-five minutes, running around the clock, and the return leg is inside your price. There is no daylight window to miss and no night in Male at either end, whatever time you land. Two-bedroom villas and above are upgraded to a shared yacht on stays of four nights or more.
Do these three things when you land.
- Book your excursions the day you arrive. Reservations close at 18:00 the evening before each trip, and the rota means a missed day is a missed week.
- Ask for the current restaurant schedule. It is republished every two weeks and venues do close, so what was open last month may not be open now.
- Take the complimentary orientation dive if you intend to dive at all. It is free provided another dive follows.
Days 2 to 3, your full days
Mornings
Little to snorkel from the beach. The reef here is a boat trip.
Fari Islands is a man-made archipelago, so there is no natural reef ringing the island. What there is, and the resort is clear about this, are two places you can snorkel from the shore without a boat: the swimming platform in the lagoon, and the Coral Garden Sanctuary at Mystique Garden. Both are planted rather than natural. For coral at scale you go out on the water, and the morning trips are where that happens.
- Anyone who wants to see turtles
- Turtle Snorkelling, 09:00, three hours, USD 170 before tax, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. It is the most booked morning on the island.
- Divers after the big animals
- Shark and manta at Shark Tank and Lankan Manta Point, 08:00 on Monday and Thursday only. One dive USD 750, two USD 1250, and this one does carry a minimum of four divers.
- Anyone happy close to home
- The lagoon swimming platform and the Coral Garden Sanctuary, both from the island, both free. Ask for a sunrise villa if snorkelling from your own steps matters to you.
- Families with young children
- Snorkelling excursions start at age six. Under-sixes can come on the boat trips, the sunset cruise, the fishing and the dolphin cruise, but not into the water on a snorkelling trip.
Afternoons
There is a scheduled activity most afternoons and two of them cost nothing. Coral Garden Snorkelling runs 15:00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at USD 150. Shark Quest runs 15:00 on Monday, Friday and Sunday at USD 150. The Marine Biologist Scuba Dive goes 14:00 on Wednesday and Sunday at USD 240. Free of charge: the Coral Regeneration Experience at 16:00 on Tuesday, the Marine Biology Talk at 16:00 on Friday, and a children's activity every single day at 17:00 for under-twelves, different each day of the week. Kayaks, paddleboards, windsurf equipment and the catamaran for experienced sailors are all free too.
Evenings
Three evening trips, all before dinner. The Dolphin Cruise by Dhoni at 17:30 on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, USD 180. Traditional Sunset Fishing at 18:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, USD 150. The Luxury Sunset Cruise on the Jolly Roger at 18:00 on Wednesday and Saturday, USD 250. Then dinner, and this is where the plan matters. Half board covers a set number of courses at La Locanda, Summer Pavilion, Arabesque, EAU Bar or Beach Shack, with breakfast at La Locanda. Three things it does not cover: every drink, because there is no beverage package here at all; theme dinners, which are discounted rather than included; and in-villa dining, which sits outside every meal package. Premium items such as lobster and caviar are also out.
Day 4, leaving
Nothing to plan around. The boat runs at any hour, so an early flight home costs you nothing.
What you will still pay
Drinks first, and they will be the largest line, because no beverage package exists on this island and half board covers food only. Then the excursions, and every price above is quoted before 10 per cent service and 17 per cent TGST, so a USD 150 trip reaches your folio at about USD 193 and the USD 750 dive at about USD 965. Then the spa, though four-night stays carry a spa credit of USD 200 per one-bedroom villa. Green tax at USD 12 per person per night is already inside your price.
Who this island's day does not suit
Anyone whose morning is a snorkel off a natural reef, and anyone travelling with under-sixes who came to snorkel as a family. The reef here is constructed and the good water is a boat ride.
