Thin
This is a built lagoon rather than an island with a reef, and the resort's own management says the better snorkelling is on excursions. What you get off the island is shallow, sheltered, clear water with fish gathering near the marked buoys by the overwater cottages, which is easy and pleasant but thin. Turtles, reef sharks and rays are reported on the organised trips out to deeper sites around the lagoon, not off your steps. There is marina and boat traffic throughout. Come for the short transfer, the entertainment and the family set-up, and book the reef as a trip.

About the resort
Hard Rock Hotel Maldives is fifteen minutes from Velana by speedboat. It sits in South Malé Atoll on CROSSROADS Maldives, a set of man-made islands shared with SAii Lagoon and a marina of restaurants, so the evenings have more going on than most Maldives islands can offer.
It is built for families and for couples who want music, food and company rather than silence. There is a kids' club, a teens' club, a main pool and live music at the Hard Rock Cafe, and Fender guitars and a record player are on loan for the stay.
What you pay
Pick your dates, a villa and a meal plan, and the price is three nights for two adults: the villa, breakfast or your meal plan, the return speedboat, green tax and every Maldivian tax.
The green season is the cheap window here. Those dates carry an early-booking saving, and they sit between two fifths and a half below the dry season for the same villa.
On the green-season dates the meal plan is a step up on the one you pay for. Full board is priced as half board, and all inclusive as the plan just below it.
Over the water, the Platinum Overwater Villa runs about a tenth above the Gold Beach Villa on the same dates. The Silver studios are the way in, between a fifth and a third below the Gold Beach Villa.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa for two adults for three nights, breakfast daily or the meal plan you pick, the return speedboat, green tax and every Maldivian tax. Snorkel kit, kayaks, paddle boats, bicycles, the sunset drinks ritual and the yoga, martial arts and aerial classes are free for the stay.
Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, in-villa dining and the minibar, excursions and diving, the spa, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Anyone who wants to snorkel off the villa. This is a built lagoon, not a reef island. The water is clear and calm, but the turtles, sharks and rays are on boat trips.
Anyone after a quiet, remote island. Boats come and go from the marina, and the islands are shared with a second resort and its guests.

Children under twelve stay free in the villa's sofa bed, two at most, and each villa sleeps three adults or two adults and two children. Children under twelve can stay over the water only with a parent's signed disclaimer.
