House reef

Our rating 5/5 Exceptional

The Golden Wall is the resort's own name for the house reef, and it is why a lot of our repeat divers pick Kihavah over anything else in Baa. The reef rings the whole island, so you get in wherever you like rather than queuing at one ladder. A survey the resort commissioned recorded over 300 fish species and more than 130 corals. Guests report turtles and reef sharks on most snorkels, plus eels, octopus and rays off the water villas. There is a resident marine biologist. The trade-off is the sand, which is grittier than the brochure suggests.

About the resort

Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas sits on a house reef that rings the whole island, so you can snorkel from almost any stretch of beach. Every villa has its own pool, and SEA, the underwater restaurant, sits right on the edge of that reef.

This is a quiet, food-led island in Baa Atoll, 35 minutes from Male by seaplane. The prices on this page are for two adults on half board, with the seaplane and every Maldivian tax inside.

What you pay

Every figure on this page is the total for two adults for the whole stay: the villa, breakfast and dinner daily, the return seaplane and every Maldivian tax. Flights to Male are extra.

Each extra night adds the same amount. There is no length-of-stay discount, so the seaplane weighs less on the bill the longer you stay.

The One Bedroom Family Beach Pool Villa comes in just under the Overwater Pool Villa. A family wanting space pays a little less than a couple wanting the water.

The sunset villas carry a premium over their standard twins, on the beach and over the water alike.

What’s included, and what isn’t

In the price: the villa, breakfast daily, a three-course dinner daily at SPICE, Manzaru or Plates, the return seaplane for two, and every Maldivian tax.

Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, all drinks, lunch, in-villa dining, private dining, meals at SEA and FIRE, the spa, excursions and diving, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.

Half board here is food only. Drinks are charged with every meal, and this is not a cheap island to drink on. Budget for the bar honestly.

Who this isn’t for

Anyone who wants an open bar. This is half board, not all-inclusive, and by day three the drinks bill tells. Ask and we will put two or three genuine all-inclusives next to it.

Families needing two bedrooms. The Two Bedroom Family Beach Pool Villa and the Residences are not priced on this page. We price those on request.

Parents of small children set on a water villa. Children stay over the water only once a parent signs a disclaimer on arrival. The beach villas are the easier choice.

Hesitant swimmers, and anyone wanting nightlife. Most of what makes this island special happens in the water, and the sand is grittier than the photographs suggest, which is the price of a reef this close in.

Before you book

The seaplane is 35 minutes and flies in daylight only. Land at Velana after 15:30 and the resort sends you by domestic flight to Dharavandhoo instead, then a 30-minute speedboat. Send us your flight and we will tell you which route you are on before you book.

Three nights is the shortest stay priced here. Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at 12:00.

Who fits where. The beach villas sleep up to three adults and a child. The water villas take three adults, or two adults and a child. The family villas add a children's room and sleep five, up to three of them children. The kids' club takes ages 4 to 12.

The festive season is not priced on this page. The Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinners are compulsory and charged on top. Pick your dates above and anything unpriced comes through to us with the dates already filled in.

The resort asks for flight details at least four days before you travel.

Tell us your dates and your villa and we will come back with a transfer-inclusive quote, including what the drinks will realistically add. Message our Maldives specialists on WhatsApp or send us an enquiry. We reply within 24 hours.

Underwater restaurant

SEA

SEA sits under the overwater restaurants at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, right on the edge of the house reef. On the way down you pass the wine cellar, more than 450 bottles kept below the waterline, which Anantara calls the first underwater wine cellar in the world. Then the room opens out, glass on every side, with reef fish, turtles and the odd shark working the coral outside.

Lunch and dinner are fine dining built around caviar, with wine chosen to match. Dinner is adults only, except on Mondays and Thursdays when children are welcome. Meals at SEA are charged on top of your meal plan. There are only a handful of tables, so we book yours with the villa.

Is Anantara Kihavah suitable for families?

Yes. The Thiththi Boli Kids Club runs supervised activities and a kids' marine biology programme. The One Bedroom Family villas, on the beach and over the water, add a separate children's room. The Two Bedroom Family Beach Pool Villa and the Beach Pool Residences take larger groups. Children under 12 in an over water villa need a signed parental disclaimer. The seasonal water park and the recreation area, with billiards, table tennis and life-sized chess, are what children remember.
