Fine
Reliable marine life rather than a reef you can circle. The fish concentrate around the water villa jetty and the pilings, and guests are often pleasantly surprised to find stingrays, blacktips, nurse sharks and turtles without going out by boat. The coral close in is patchy and hard underfoot, so bring reef shoes with a stiff sole if you plan to walk around the water villas. Triggerfish here are aggressive enough that guests warn each other. The memorable encounters, including Shark Point, happen on the guided trips, which the dive centre runs well. Gear is free.

We had a wonderful stay at Taj Maldives. The property itself is incredibly calm, private and peaceful. It never felt overly crowded, which made the entire experience feel very relaxed and intimate.

About the resort
Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives sits fifteen minutes by speedboat from Velana, in South Malé Atoll, on one of the largest natural lagoons in the country. The boat runs at any hour, so a late flight still reaches the island the same night.
Taj Exotica is a lagoon resort rather than a reef resort. The water off the beach is shallow, warm and calm for a long way out, which suits swimmers, children and anyone nervous of open water. It is quiet, with thatch and old timber rather than glass, and the service is the part guests write home about.
What you pay
Every price on this page is three nights for two, half board, with the boat and every Maldivian tax inside it. The two-bedroom suites are priced for four.
The Sunrise Overwater Villa is the way in. A private pool over the water adds about a fifth. The beach villas with pools sit above both, and dates move the price far less than the villa you choose does.
The green season is the cheap window on this page. The week from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve is not priced here: pick those nights and they come through to us with the dates filled in. Stays starting on New Year's Day or the two days after are priced, and carry no gala dinner.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: the villa, return speedboat transfers, breakfast and a three-course dinner daily at 24 Degrees, Waterfront or Mediterraneo, one soft drink with each meal, evening tea at the Equator Bar, a sunset dhoni cruise, snorkel gear, non-motorised water sports, wifi, and every Maldivian tax. Couples celebrating a honeymoon, birthday or anniversary also get a cake, a floral bath and a short photo session with one print.
Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, lunch, alcohol and any drink beyond the one with each meal, diving and boat excursions, the spa, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Full board and all inclusive are available on request. Ask us and we will price both beside half board.
Who this isn't for
Anyone who wants a buffet. Every meal at Taj Exotica is à la carte, breakfast included, and at busy times it is slow. Allow time before a morning excursion.
Snorkellers who want a reef from the beach. The fish gather round the water villa jetty, but the coral that matters is reached by boat.
Travellers who want Maldivian food every night. The menus lean Indian and continental, and the Indian cooking is the strength.
Christmas and New Year's Eve. Both carry compulsory gala dinners at a steep price per person, which is why that week is not priced on this page.

Three nights is the shortest stay we sell here, and it is also the length that brings dinner, the boat and the cruise into the price.
Diwali Eve and Valentine's Eve each carry a compulsory gala dinner, charged on top for every adult and child from five. Ask us for the amount if your stay touches either night.
Children under five eat free. Every villa except the two-bedroom suites takes up to four guests. The photo session and sunset cruise depend on slots and weather, so book the photographer as soon as you arrive.
