The reef/drop off near the In Ocean villas was absolutely stunning with vibrant corals and fish soup. There sometimes was a bit of a current coming in or out, and the reef near the villas is pretty shallow during low tide.

Angsana Velavaru is 40 minutes by seaplane from Velana, in Dhaalu Atoll. The unusual thing about it is that the overwater villas are not attached to the island. The InOcean villas sit out on the reef, apart from everything, with the drop-off a short swim from the deck.

That is the decision this page really turns on. Snorkellers book InOcean. Everyone else is on the beach, where the entry is sand rather than coral, and the resort runs a boat out to the reef once a day.

What this actually costs

Every price is the whole villa for two, with the return seaplane and every Maldivian tax already inside. Indian TCS is added separately on the total invoice value.

The second dropdown carries three things at once: the meal plan, the number of nights and the travel dates. Half board is breakfast and either lunch or dinner. All inclusive dine adds the third meal, afternoon tea, and free-flow drinks from 11:00 to 23:00 at the main restaurant and bar.

On the entry beach villa that upgrade costs about ₹37,400 for three nights. On the InOcean Pool Villa it is about ₹40,800. If you drink, it pays for itself.

Book three nights in a beach villa for travel to 30 September and the fourth is free: ₹184,400 becomes ₹186,900, and the difference is the green tax on the extra night. It applies to all three beach categories and stops on 1 October.

Every stay of three nights or more also carries a morning or sunset cruise, a thirty-minute treatment for two at the spa, a floating breakfast, and a beach dinner for honeymooners. Those are in the price, not extras.

Who this isn’t for

Snorkellers who book a beach villa. The reef that people come here for is the drop-off out by the InOcean villas, and from the beach you get one boat trip a day to it. Guests who book the water villas swim it whenever they like.

Anyone landing at Velana after 15:00. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a later arrival means a night in Male at your own cost. Going home, an international flight leaving before 09:00 means travelling back the previous afternoon.

Anyone travelling between 24 December and 9 January. Those dates are not on the dropdown, because both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve carry a compulsory dinner and no check-out is allowed on 31 December. We book them, we just cost them by hand.

Before you book

These prices close on 30 September. That is the booking deadline, not the travel deadline: book by then and you can travel until 31 January 2027 at the figures on this page.

If you take an InOcean villa, a ferry runs across seventeen times a day, from 07:00 until the last boat back at 23:00. The cluster also has its own restaurant and bar out there, Azzurro, so dinner does not depend on the timetable.

For travel to 30 September, two children aged four to fifteen sharing with two adults stay and eat free. Their seaplane and green tax are still charged. From 1 October that offer stops.

The beach villas take three adults, or two adults and a child. The InOcean villas take three adults, or two adults and two children. Larger family and two-bedroom villas exist and are not on the dropdown, so we price those by hand.

House reef 4/5 Strong

Worth choosing the resort for. One or two caveats on entry point or current.

The reef here is genuinely good, but where you sleep decides how much of it you get. The drop-off runs along the InOcean villas, a short swim from those decks, and guests describe vibrant coral and dense fish. Channels are cut through the shallow reef out to the drop-off and marked with buoys, with ladders at the end of each, and there can be a lateral current, so it is worth walking to the upstream end of the boardwalk and drifting back. At low tide the reef in front of the villas is shallow. From the beach it is a different proposition: the sand entry is easy, the back of the island holds a shallow reef with big schools of juvenile fish, and the resort runs one boat a day out to the drop-off. Getting there

Land at Velana after 15:00 and the last transfer of the day will have gone, which means a night in Malé before you reach the island.

Seaplanes fly in daylight only, between 06:00 and 15:30, so an international flight has to land at Velana before 15:00. Land later and you spend the first night in Male at your own cost. Going home, a flight leaving before 09:00 means travelling back to Male the previous afternoon, because the resort cannot put you on a same-day seaplane. Send flight details three to ten days ahead. Baggage is 20 kg checked plus 5 kg cabin, with excess charged by the seaplane operator. The airport representative meets guests at counter A16, and the Vilu lounge at the seaplane terminal is included on arrival.

At 207 sq m it is twice the size of the infinity pool villa and adds a private sala looking over the beach. The pool sits in the garden and is slightly smaller, 15 sq m, so this is a villa you take for space rather than for the pool.

Where is Angsana Velavaru? +
In South Nilandhe, the atoll usually written as Dhaalu, about 40 minutes south of Male by seaplane. Velavaru means turtle, and the island is known locally as Turtle Island. There are 91 land villas and 34 overwater villas, and the overwater ones sit out on the reef rather than off the beach.
How do I get there, and is there a cut-off time? +
By seaplane, 40 minutes from Velana International Airport on a 15-seat twin-engine aircraft that lands at the resort's own station. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, between 06:00 and 15:30, so your international flight has to land before 15:00. Land later and you spend the first night in Male at your own cost. Going home, a flight leaving before 09:00 means travelling back to Male the previous afternoon. Send us your flight times and we will check the connection before you book.
What is included in the price shown? +
The villa for two, the return seaplane for two, green tax, service charge and GST, and the meal plan named in the dropdown. Indian TCS is added separately on the total invoice value, and the current rate is on our Taxes and TCS page. Every stay of three nights or more also carries a morning or sunset cruise, a thirty-minute treatment for two at the spa, a floating breakfast, and a beach dinner for honeymooners. Daily guided house reef snorkelling, snorkel gear, kayaks and paddleboards, coral planting, the marine talk and the daily bird feeding are all free as well.
What is the difference between half board and all inclusive dine? +
Half board is breakfast and either lunch or dinner. All inclusive dine adds the third meal, afternoon tea between 15:30 and 17:00, and free-flow drinks including wine, beer, cocktails and house spirits from 11:00 to 23:00, plus a daily minibar restock. Land villa guests eat at Kaani Restaurant and the Kuredhi Pool Bar; InOcean guests also have Azzurro out in the cluster. Funa, the pan-Asian restaurant, opens four evenings a week and carries a supplement on either plan.
What is the difference between a beach villa and an InOcean villa? +
More than the view. The land villas are on the island itself, with a sand beach entry. The InOcean villas are two-storey overwater villas set apart from the island on the reef, each with a rooftop terrace and an infinity pool, and the drop-off is a short swim from the deck. A ferry crosses between the two seventeen times a day, from 07:00 with the last boat back at 23:00, and the InOcean cluster has its own reception, restaurant and bar, so you are not tied to the timetable for dinner.
Is the house reef any good? +
Yes, and where you sleep decides how much of it you get. Guests report vibrant coral and dense fish along the drop-off by the InOcean villas, with channels cut through the shallow reef, marked by buoys, and reef access platforms and ladders at the end of each. There can be a lateral current, and the reef in front of the villas is shallow at low tide. From the beach the entry is easy sand, the back of the island holds a shallow reef full of juvenile fish, and the resort runs a guided snorkel out to the drop-off every day.
Can we book Christmas or New Year? +
Not from the dropdown, which stops on 23 December and picks up again on 10 January. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve both carry a compulsory dinner, in-villa dining is withdrawn on those nights, and no check-out is allowed on 31 December. Ask us and we will price those dates by hand.
Is Angsana Velavaru good for families? +
It works well for families. The Rangers Kids Club takes children from four to eleven, open 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, and there is a kids pool, a futsal pitch and a full watersports centre. For travel to 30 September, two children aged four to fifteen sharing with two adults stay and eat free, though their seaplane and green tax are still charged. There are also family and two-bedroom villas up to 473 sq m that are not on the dropdown, and we price those by hand.
What happens to these prices after 30 September? +
30 September is the booking deadline on this offer, not the travel deadline. Book by then and you can travel until 31 January 2027 at the prices shown. After that the resort issues a new offer, and until it does we quote by hand. Tell us your dates, how many adults and children, whether you want to be on the beach or over the water, and which meal plan, and we will come back with a costing that includes the seaplane.
Can I fly a drone at Angsana Velavaru? +
Yes, with rules that matter more here than at most resorts, because the seaplanes land on the lagoon. You register the drone on arrival, call reception before every flight to confirm there is no seaplane movement, and fly only inside the window and the area they give you, in daylight and good weather, with the drone in sight at all times. The ceiling is 30 feet. Crossing the lagoon is not allowed unless it is coordinated with the ferry crossing, and you may not fly over other villas or guests.
