One good stretch rather than a reef you can circle, and the island is big enough that getting to it is a walk or a cycle. The northern side has the conventional drop-off and the better marine life, with nurse sharks reported daily by some guests, plus blacktips, turtles and octopus. The southern blue hole is small and rubbly and the northern one is mostly sand, so temper expectations there. Long-stay snorkellers rate the reef the weakest part of this resort and thin on fish by Baa standards. Wind spoils visibility often. Gear is free and the guided trips are charged.

Wonderful stay

About the resort
Vakkaru Maldives has two ways in, and the second one matters for Indian flights. The seaplane from Velana takes 30 minutes but needs you landed by 15:00. The domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a speedboat take about 50 minutes and still connect if you land by 16:20.
The island sits in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with 111 villas and residences along 1.6 km of beach and a strong house reef. It suits couples and families who want a wide choice of restaurants without a long transfer.
What you pay
Seven villas are priced on this page, from the Over Water Villa to the One Bedroom Overwater Pool Residence, at three to seven nights. Every price is the whole stay for two adults on half board, with the return seaplane and every Maldivian tax inside it.
Pick your nights above as well as your villa. The panel shows the whole stay rather than a nightly rate, so a longer stay and a bigger villa are easy to weigh against each other.
The pool is the real step up over the water. The Over Water Villa has a large sundeck and no pool. The Overwater Pool Villa adds a 35 m² pool. On the beach, the Beach Pool Villa gives you 250 m² and its own stretch of sand, more room than any overwater villa short of a residence.
What's included, and what isn't
In the price: your villa for two, breakfast and dinner daily, the return seaplane and every Maldivian tax.
Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, drinks, lunch, the spa, diving and excursions, destination dining, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.
Who this isn't for
Anyone who wants a fixed bill. Half board covers two meals and no drinks. The resort sells a daily drinks package, and with several restaurants, a wine cellar and sandbank dinners on offer, the extras add up quickly.
Anyone landing at Velana late in the evening. Even the domestic route needs you on the ground by 16:20. Send us your flights before you book them.

What dining options are available at Vakkaru Maldives?
Vakkaru Maldives has several restaurants and bars, among them Amaany (international, by the beach), Isoletta (Italian), Vakku (open-air grill), Onu, Cabana by the pool and the Lagoon Bar, plus a wine cellar, Vakkaru Reserve. Half board covers breakfast and dinner, and drinks are charged. Sandbank dinners, floating breakfasts and other destination dining are booked and charged separately. Ask us which venues your meal plan covers on your dates.
What spa and wellness facilities are available?
Merana Spa at Vakkaru Maldives has 12 treatment rooms and an outdoor area with a warm whirlpool, plunge pool, sauna and steam room. Treatments include wellness programmes, therapeutic massage and Ayurvedic therapies by Siddhalepa. It is open 10:00 to 21:00. A Yoga Pavilion on the beach runs group sessions from Saturday to Thursday, and private classes by reservation.
What watersports and activities are offered?
Splash, the dive and watersports centre at Vakkaru Maldives, offers PADI dive courses, dolphin cruises, manta and turtle snorkelling, big game fishing, jet ski, parasailing, wakeboarding, glass kayaks, yacht cruises and local island tours. It is open 08:00 to 18:00. Diving and excursions are charged on top of the price on this page.
Are there facilities for children and families?
Yes. The Parrotfish Club at Vakkaru Maldives is a supervised kids' club for children aged 3 to 12, with indoor play areas, a kids' pool, an outdoor playground and daily themed activities, open 08:30 to 18:00. The Coconut Club is an unsupervised lounge for teenagers and adults, with billiards, table tennis, foosball and board games, open around the clock.
Is there a drinks package at Vakkaru Maldives?
Yes. Vakkaru Maldives sells two daily drinks packages: a non-alcoholic one, and a premium one with champagne by the glass, named spirits, wines and cocktails. Both run from 11:00 to 23:00, by the glass, at Amaany, Isoletta, the Lagoon Bar, Onu, Vakku and Cabana. Half board includes no drinks, so on a longer stay a package can be worth pricing.
