A local island is an inhabited Maldivian island with its own village, school and mosque, where visitors stay in guest houses rather than on a private resort island. This page sets out the thirty-six local islands and city islands with a full guide on this site, grouped by how far they are from Velana International Airport, so the choice can start with the two things that decide most trips: how long the boat ride is, and what you want to see when you get there.

Between them these islands have about 680 registered guest houses and city hotels. They range from Himmafushi, 15 to 20 minutes from the airport, to Hithadhoo in Addu City, a flight of 70 to 90 minutes south.

How to choose a local island

Start with the transfer. Most local islands are reached by shared speedboat on a fixed timetable, not by seaplane. Islands in North and South Malé Atoll are 15 to 45 minutes away, and several have boats into the evening. Ari, Vaavu and Baa islands are 70 minutes to over two hours away, with fewer departures, so the time your flight lands matters more.

Then pick by what you want. Each island has something it does best: whale sharks in South Ari, surf in North Malé, stingrays in Vaavu, mantas at Hanifaru Bay in Baa, tiger sharks at Fuvahmulah, or simply a quiet beach close to the airport.

Decide how busy you want it. Maafushi and Thoddoo have the most guest houses and cafés. Gulhi, Fulidhoo and Ukulhas are small and quiet. A busier island means more choice of food and trips; a quieter one means an emptier beach.

The rules are the same everywhere. No alcohol is served on any local island, swimwear belongs on the designated bikini beach and the boats, and Friday is the weekly holy day, when ferries stop and shops close around midday prayers.

The short version. For a first visit close to the airport, Maafushi gives the most choice and Gulhi the most calm. For whale sharks, Dhigurah or Dhangethi. For surf, Thulusdhoo or Himmafushi. For a night before or after a resort, Hulhumalé.

Beside the airport: for a night before or after

These three are part of Malé City. They are not beach holidays in themselves, but they solve the late landing and the early flight, and Malé is worth a few hours for its own sake. Bikinis are not permitted anywhere in Malé City.

Hulhumalé

North Malé Atoll · about 10 minutes by road · 58 guest houses

A planned city on reclaimed land next to the airport island, with a long public beach, cafés and taxis at any hour. It is the easiest place in the country for a first or last night, with no boat to catch.

Fresh tuna laid out on the tiled counters of the Malé fish market

Malé

The capital · ferry about 10 minutes, or by road · 27 hotels and guest houses

The one place in the Maldives that feels like a city: the coral-stone Old Friday Mosque, the fish market, the museum and narrow streets full of scooters. A half day of sightseeing fits easily around a transfer.

Villimalé from the air, a small green island ringed by beach and lagoon, with the Malé skyline on the horizon

Villimalé

Malé City ward · ferry from Malé about 10 minutes · 1 guest house

A small, green island ward west of Malé with no petrol cars, shaded lanes and a natural beach. It is a quiet afternoon out from the capital rather than a place to base a holiday.

North Malé and Gaafaru: surf, sunrise and wrecks, 15 minutes to an hour away

The islands north-east of the airport are short, easy crossings. Two of them are the surf islands of the local-island world, busiest from about March to October when the swell arrives. Gaafaru, alone on its own atoll further north, is about an hour away. How the reefs, surf and local islands of North Malé compare with South Malé is set out in North Malé or South Malé Atoll.

Himmafushi

North Malé Atoll · speedboat 15 to 20 minutes · 21 guest houses

The closest local island to the airport by boat, and a surf island first: the Jailbreaks right-hander breaks a few minutes' walk from the guest houses. Outside the surf season it is a short, simple beach stay.

Thulusdhoo

North Malé Atoll · speedboat about 30 minutes · 33 guest houses

Dhiffushi

North Malé Atoll · speedboat 40 to 45 minutes · 31 guest houses and a hotel

Guest-house tourism in the Maldives began here. The three islands are a few minutes apart by boat, share the same reefs, sandbanks and day trips, and are easy to combine.

Local islands by what you want

Whale sharks. Dhigurah and Dhangethi, both on the edge of the South Ari protected area, quieter Omadhoo between them, Maamigili, with its own airport beside the whale shark reef, and Fenfushi and Dhiddhoo on the southern rim. Day trips from Maafushi reach the same water, but with a long crossing each way.

Surfing. Thulusdhoo for Cokes, and Himmafushi for Jailbreaks. Both are close to the airport, and Huraa is a base for the same breaks by boat.

Diving. Fuvahmulah for tiger sharks, Rasdhoo for dawn hammerheads, Fulidhoo and Keyodhoo for Vaavu's channels, stingrays and nurse sharks, Guraidhoo for the South Malé channels close to the airport, Himandhoo for Himandhoo Thila, Gan for Laamu's quiet channels, and Gaafaru and Hithadhoo for shipwrecks.

Mantas. Dharavandhoo, Kamadhoo and Maalhos for Hanifaru Bay, roughly May to November, Rasdhoo for its cleaning station, from about November to April, and Mahibadhoo for Mahibadhoo Manta Point, from about December to April.

A quiet beach. Gulhi near the airport, Dhiffushi in North Malé, Ukulhas, Feridhoo and Mathiveri in North Ari, Fehendhoo for the emptiest beaches of all, and Fulhadhoo for one of the finest beaches in the country.

The most choice. Maafushi and Thoddoo, with the largest number of guest houses, cafés and trips.

A late landing. Hulhumalé by road at any hour. Of the boat islands, some hotels on Gulhi and Thulusdhoo run boats into the late evening; most others need you at Velana by mid-afternoon.

Two islands in one trip. Maafushi, Gulhi and Guraidhoo are a few minutes apart, and Himmafushi, Huraa and Thulusdhoo are a short boat ride apart in North Malé. Dhangethi and Dhigurah, and Omadhoo and Hangnaameedhoo, are neighbours in South Ari, Rasdhoo and Ukulhas are a short boat ride apart in North Ari, Fehendhoo, Fulhadhoo and Goidhoo share the small Goidhoo Atoll in Baa, and Maalhos is a 20-minute boat ride from Dharavandhoo. Many trips also pair a few nights on a local island with a resort at the end.

Who local islands aren't for

Anyone who wants a drink with dinner every night, an over-water villa, a kids' club or a beach with nobody else on it. Local islands are villages first, the bikini beach is shared, and evenings are quiet. The money trade-off against a resort is set out in local island or resort island.

Common questions

What is a local island in the Maldives?

An inhabited island where Maldivians live, with a village, school and mosque, as opposed to a resort island that holds a single hotel. Since 2009 visitors have been allowed to stay on local islands in guest houses. Alcohol is not served, and swimwear is for the designated bikini beach.

Which local island is closest to Malé airport?

Hulhumalé is next to the airport, about ten minutes by road. For a beach stay by boat, Himmafushi is closest at 15 to 20 minutes, followed by Gulhi at 20 to 30 minutes and Thulusdhoo at about 30 minutes. All three are reached by shared speedboat.

Which local island is best for whale sharks?

Dhigurah and Dhangethi in South Ari Atoll, both beside the marine protected area where whale sharks are seen year-round. The whale shark research programme is based on Dhigurah. Both are about two hours from the airport by speedboat, so allow at least four nights.

Which local island is best for a first visit?

Maafushi, for the most choice of guest houses, cafés and day trips, or Gulhi, ten minutes away, for a quieter beach with the same trips. Both are under 45 minutes from the airport by speedboat, which keeps the transfer simple on a first trip.

Can you drink alcohol on a local island?

No. Every local island is a Muslim community, so no hotel, café or shop serves alcohol, and it cannot be brought ashore. Visitors who want a drink book a resort day pass, and on Maafushi licensed bar boats moor just offshore.

Can you visit more than one local island in a trip?

Yes, most easily between neighbours. Maafushi, Gulhi and Guraidhoo are a few minutes apart in South Malé Atoll, Dhangethi and Dhigurah sit side by side in South Ari, and Rasdhoo and Ukulhas are close in North Ari. Islands in different atolls usually need a separate transfer.

The Maldives on a local island is the same sea, reefs and sandbanks as a resort, reached from a village instead of a private island. Choose the island by its transfer and by what you want to see, give the far ones four nights or more, and every guest house on this site, priced for your dates with the boat included, is on the guest houses and city hotels page.
