Dhiffushi is an inhabited island on the eastern rim of North Malé Atoll, about 37 kilometres north-east of Malé and 40 to 45 minutes from the airport by shared speedboat. It is the most easterly inhabited island in the Maldives, so it sees the sunrise first, and it has a long bikini beach, a wide lagoon and sandbanks scattered offshore.

It is calmer and more spread out than Maafushi, with a real village behind the beach and enough cafés to eat somewhere different each night. For couples and friends who want an easy local island north of the airport, it is a strong choice.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 1,270 people on Dhiffushi: 1,021 Maldivians and 249 foreign nationals, up from 1,053 in 2014. It is a settled, residential island with a school, mosques, a health centre and doctor, a harbour, a football ground and an ATM. Serious medical cases go to Malé, 40 minutes away by speedboat.

Guest houses came after the government opened inhabited islands to tourism in 2009, and the island now has 31 guest houses and one hotel registered with the Ministry of Tourism, about 420 rooms in all. Most are small and locally run. Like every inhabited island in the Maldives, Dhiffushi is Muslim and Dhivehi is spoken at home; English is spoken in the hotels, cafés and dive centres.

The island is about a kilometre long, so the whole of it is walkable: the beaches on three sides, the harbour, the village streets and the supermarkets, which are better stocked here than on most small islands.

How to get to Dhiffushi from Malé airport

The shared speedboat

Most visitors arrive by shared speedboat, booked by the hotel, from Malé or straight from the airport. The crossing takes 40 to 45 minutes. At Rashu Hiyaa, someone meets you at the arrivals gate. The boats run to a timetable rather than to your flight, and each hotel confirms the departure that fits your landing time.

Flights from India landing in the afternoon reach the island the same day. A late-night landing means a private boat, charged on top, or a night in Malé or Hulhumalé first.

The public ferry

Dhiffushi is the last stop on the government ferry from Malé city, which calls at Himmafushi, Huraa and Thulusdhoo on the way and takes around two hours. It runs once a day each way, every day except Friday, arriving from Malé in the late afternoon and leaving Dhiffushi at about 06:30. Check the current MTCC timetable before relying on it.

The short version. Dhiffushi is 40 to 45 minutes by speedboat, north of the airport and away from the Maafushi and Gulhi cluster. Land by the afternoon and you will be on the beach before sunset.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is served on Dhiffushi, and none may be brought ashore. A resort day pass is the usual way to have a drink.

Dress. Swimwear is for the bikini beach and the boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

Fridays and prayer times. Friday is the weekly holy day; the public ferry does not run, and shops and cafés close around midday prayers.

Money. There is an ATM, but not every business takes cards, and card payments often carry a small surcharge. US dollars and rufiyaa are both widely accepted.

Mosquitoes. They can be a nuisance around breakfast and dinner, especially in the wetter months. Bring repellent.

Things to do on Dhiffushi

The beaches

The bikini beach is long and narrow, with sunbeds, shade, a café and tables, and swimwear is allowed. Walk around the island and you will find quieter stretches of sand on the south and east sides, often empty. The east beach is the place for sunrise, which arrives here before anywhere else in the Maldives. Shade is limited away from the bikini beach.

Snorkelling from the shore

Dhiffushi sits in a large lagoon with reef within reach of the beach, and snorkelling from shore is free. In a small lagoon south of the beach, the coral patches are in fair condition and busy with reef fish. Near the north tip, the reef flat is shallower and its coral more worn, but triggerfish and pipefish are easy to spot. About 100 metres out, the drop-off has better coral and small caves. Conditions are usually sheltered, but keep well away from the harbour channel, where boats come and go, and from the channel towards the neighbouring resort, where the current runs hard. Rays and small reef sharks sometimes come close to the beach.

Diving

Three dive centres operate on the island and visit about a dozen sites nearby, with sharks, turtles and rays. Beginners can try a discover-scuba dive without a certificate.

Watersports and evenings

Watersports centres run jet-skis, kitesurfing and other boat-based activities. In the evenings, Dhiffushi has a good spread of cafés and restaurants for a small island, from Maldivian food and fresh juices to international dishes on the beach. Sunset comes at around half past six.

Excursions from Dhiffushi

Sandbanks. Around half a dozen sandbanks lie off the coast, used for snorkelling stops, picnics and private dinners.

Snorkelling trips. Boat trips to the better offshore reefs, with equipment, and night snorkelling trips.

Dolphin cruises. Sunset trips for spinner dolphins.

Night fishing. Hand-line fishing after dark, often ending with the catch cooked.

Resort day passes, Thulusdhoo and Himmafushi. Nearby resorts sell day passes, and Thulusdhoo, the surf island, is a short hop away. The Thulusdhoo island guide covers it. Himmafushi, the other surf island, nearer the airport, has its own Himmafushi island guide.

Gaafaru. Further north, alone on its own atoll, Gaafaru is a fishing village known for shipwrecks that snorkellers can partly see. The Gaafaru island guide covers it.

How long to stay. Three or four nights covers a sandbank trip, a snorkelling or diving day and time on the beach. Add a night for a resort day.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly November to April, is the peak season, with calm seas, sunshine and clear water. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to October, brings showers and wind but lower rates and quieter beaches. Snorkelling from the shore is best on calm days in either season.

Holiday Crib, Holiday Home Dhiffushi, Island Serenity, Maldivine Stay, Moro Dhiffushi Maldives, Navaya Dhiffushi and Ruka Maldives are filed under Alifu Dhaalu on the register, but they are on this island; Alif Dhaal has no inhabited island called Dhiffushi. Who Dhiffushi isn't for

Anyone who wants to hop between the South Malé guest-house islands. Dhiffushi is north of the airport, away from Maafushi, Gulhi and the Vaavu day trips.

Anyone expecting a reef worth hours of snorkelling straight off the beach. The shore reef is free and fun, but the best coral is reached by boat.

Anyone who wants a drink, nightlife or a kids' club. A resort is the better spend for those, and the trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.

Common questions

How far is Dhiffushi from Malé airport?

About 37 kilometres north-east, on the eastern edge of North Malé Atoll. The shared speedboat takes 40 to 45 minutes, from Malé or directly from the airport. The government public ferry takes around two hours and does not run on Fridays.

Can you snorkel from the beach on Dhiffushi?

Yes. Dhiffushi sits in a wide lagoon, and you can snorkel from the shore for free. The coral in the small lagoon south of the beach is in fair condition, and the drop-off about 100 metres out is better. Stay away from the harbour channel and the strong current towards the neighbouring resort.

Is there a bikini beach on Dhiffushi?

Yes. The main bikini beach is long and narrow, with sunbeds, shade and a café. Swimwear is allowed there and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

Is Dhiffushi better than Maafushi?

It is quieter, more spread out and has an easier shore lagoon. Maafushi has more cafés, excursions and evening life, and sits closer to the South Malé and Vaavu day trips. Choose Dhiffushi for calm and sunrise; choose Maafushi for choice and a busier island.

How many guest houses are there on Dhiffushi?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists 31 guest houses and one hotel on Dhiffushi, with about 420 rooms between them. The largest have 30 to 40 rooms; many are small family places. The full list is on this page.

Is there an ATM on Dhiffushi?

Yes, there is one ATM. Not every business takes cards, and card payments often carry a surcharge of a few percent, so carry some US dollars or rufiyaa as well.

Dhiffushi is North Malé's easy local island: a long bikini beach, a snorkelling lagoon from the shore, sandbanks offshore and sunrise before anywhere else in the country. Land by the afternoon, give it three or four nights, and add Thulusdhoo or a resort day if you want more. Both Dhiffushi guest houses on this site are priced for your dates, shared speedboat included, on the guest houses and city hotels page.
