Maamigili is the largest island in South Ari Atoll, a working town of about 2,800 people roughly 107 kilometres south-west of Malé, with its own domestic airport and the whale shark reef of Maamigili Beyru on its doorstep. The flight from Velana takes about 20 to 25 minutes; the scheduled speedboat takes an hour and a half to two hours.

It is a busier, more practical place than its quieter neighbours, with shops, cafés, a big harbour and taxis. For travellers who want the shortest possible whale shark trips and the option of flying in, it is the most convenient base in South Ari.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 2,798 people on Maamigili, up from 2,079 in 2014 and 1,671 in 2006, which makes it the most populous island in Alif Dhaal Atoll. Unlike most islands in the chain it is naturally round. A main street runs east to west with a mosque, a medical centre, a large school and the council offices, and the eastern end is lined with shops.

The island's airport was built on more than 73 hectares of reclaimed lagoon along its southern edge, and the harbour has been expanded several times to take liveaboard boats. A health centre and pharmacy handle minor problems, and there is a Bank of Maldives ATM.

The Ministry of Tourism register lists ten guest houses on Maamigili with 80 rooms between them. Ari Residence, with 18 rooms, and Oren, with 14, are the largest; most of the others have three to eight.

How to get to Maamigili from Malé airport

Domestic flight

Domestic flights from Velana to Villa International Airport Maamigili take about 20 to 25 minutes and run several times a day. The airport is on the island itself, a few minutes from the village, and guest houses arrange the pick-up. It is the easiest way in after a mid-afternoon landing and the gentlest on a rough day.

Scheduled speedboat

Timetabled speedboats from the airport jetty take about an hour and a half to two hours in open water, usually with a late-morning and an afternoon departure and fewer or none on Fridays. Landing at Velana after about 15:00 usually means the flight or a night near the airport; the Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.

The public ferry

The government ferry runs a few days a week, not on Fridays, and takes six to seven hours. It suits only travellers with time to spare.

The short version. Fly if you can: it is quick, it runs several times a day and it lands on the island. Give it at least three nights so a whale shark trip can be tried more than once.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Maamigili, and it may not be brought onto the island. Resort day passes are the usual way to have a drink.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the tourist beach and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women. Ask before taking close-up photographs of people.

Whale sharks. Keep a respectful distance, never touch or chase the shark, and do not use flash. Guides brief every group before entering the water.

Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and boat times change.

Things to do on Maamigili

Whale sharks

Maamigili Beyru, the outer reef off the island, lies within the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area and is one of the most reliable places in the world to swim with whale sharks, which are seen here in every month of the year. Boats from Maamigili reach the reef in minutes rather than the longer runs from islands further north, so trips can be timed for the calmest part of the day. Sightings are likely rather than guaranteed.

The tourist beach and the house reef

The designated tourist beach has white sand and some palm shade, but fewer loungers than the beaches on Dhigurah. The house reef can be snorkelled from the shore, with nurse sharks, stingrays and reef fish in five to ten metres of water. The coral is mixed rather than outstanding, and currents can pick up near the channels.

Diving

A PADI dive centre works from the island. South Ari's sites are close, among them Kuda Rah Thila, a pinnacle for more experienced divers, Broken Rock, a reef split by a narrow canyon, and the manta cleaning stations at Rangali Madivaru. Whale sharks are sometimes met on dives along the outer reef.

Excursions from Maamigili

Whale shark snorkelling. The main event, a short boat ride to Maamigili Beyru.

Resort days. Holiday Island Resort is about a minute away by boat and Sun Island about fifteen minutes, and both sell day passes.

Sandbanks, turtles and dolphins. Picnic island and sandbank trips, turtle snorkelling and late-afternoon dolphin cruises.

Fishing. Sunset fishing, often with a barbecue of the catch, and big-game fishing trips.

Dhigurah and Dhangethi. The neighbouring whale-shark islands have longer bikini beaches and quieter villages. The Dhigurah and Dhangethi guides cover them.

Fenfushi, Dhiddhoo and Mahibadhoo. Fenfushi, with its coral-stone mosque, and tiny Dhiddhoo are close by on the southern rim, and Mahibadhoo, the atoll capital, is further north.

How long to stay. Three nights is enough for two whale shark attempts if you fly in. Four nights adds a resort day and a dive or sandbank day.

When to go

Whale sharks are seen all year at Maamigili Beyru. The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calmer seas and the clearest water. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more wind, rain and rougher boat rides, but plankton that draws mantas to the area, quieter islands and lower rates.

Who Maamigili isn't for

Anyone who wants a long, quiet bikini beach. Maamigili is a busy town with an airport; Dhigurah has a far better beach for the same whale sharks.

Anyone who wants an outstanding house reef. The coral off Maamigili is mixed; Omadhoo has a kilometre of reef along its shore.

Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.
