Fehendhoo is one of the smallest and quietest guest-house islands in the Maldives: a long, thin island of fewer than 200 people in Baa Atoll, about 98 kilometres north-west of Malé and around two hours from Velana International Airport by speedboat. It sits on Goidhoo Atoll, a small ring of reef just south of the main Baa Atoll, and Hanifaru Bay, famous for its manta gatherings, is within a day trip.

There are two bikini beaches, a house reef off the shore and very little else to do, which is the point. For couples who want an empty beach and a village that barely notices visitors, it is one of the best-kept quiet corners of the local-island world.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 198 people on Fehendhoo, double the 99 of 2014, which still makes it a very small community. Islanders have long lived from fishing, boat building and coconuts, and the village is a handful of sand streets at one end of an island that is mostly palm forest.

Fehendhoo is one of three inhabited islands on Goidhoo Atoll, also known as Horsburgh Atoll, which lies about six miles south of the main Baa Atoll across an open channel. Its neighbours are Goidhoo, the largest of the three, and Fulhadhoo, known for one of the finest beaches in the country. Administratively all three belong to Baa.

The Ministry of Tourism register lists seven guest houses with 55 rooms between them, plus two home stays. Isla Retreat, with 20 rooms, is the largest; the rest are small family places. A Bank of Maldives ATM opened on the island in 2025, but cash in US dollars or rufiyaa is still the safer plan, and serious medical cases go to the regional hospital on Eydhafushi.

How to get to Fehendhoo from Malé airport

The shared speedboat

A shared speedboat runs from the Malé area to Goidhoo Atoll most days except Friday, usually leaving around 13:00, and takes about two to two and a half hours in open water, often calling at Goidhoo first. Guest houses book the seat and meet you at the airport. Landing at Velana by late morning is the safe plan; a later landing means a first night in Hulhumalé.

Domestic flight and speedboat

The faster way in is a domestic flight from Velana to Dharavandhoo, the airport island of Baa Atoll, followed by a speedboat of about 40 minutes across to Fehendhoo. It costs more than the shared boat, but it cuts the open-water crossing and suits a later landing. Your guest house arranges the boat from Dharavandhoo.

The public ferry

There is no direct public ferry. The government ferry runs to Goidhoo a few times a week and takes most of a day, followed by a short boat across to Fehendhoo. It is not practical for a holiday with an international flight at each end.

The short version. Land at Velana in the morning for the midday speedboat, or take the domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a 40-minute boat if you land later. Allow at least four nights to make the crossing worth it.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Fehendhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the two bikini beaches and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women. Ask before photographing people, especially women and children.

Fridays. The small shops close around midday prayers, and the shared speedboat does not usually run.

Things to do on Fehendhoo

The two bikini beaches

The first bikini beach is about five minutes' walk from the village, under a palm grove, with loungers, hammocks and shade. The second, at the far western end of the island, is longer and emptier and faces the sunset; it is a 15 to 30 minute walk along a forest path, and some guest houses run guests there by buggy. Walking the whole shoreline is not possible, as the bush comes down to the sand in places.

The house reef

The reef can be reached from the shore, and stingrays, reef sharks and plenty of reef fish are regularly seen, with turtles in the lagoon. Currents can be strong close to the shore and at the ends of the island, so snorkel with someone and ask locally where to get in.

Kayaking and the lagoon

The lagoon inside Goidhoo Atoll is calm enough for kayaks and paddleboards, and the nearby sandbanks and uninhabited islands are within paddling distance on a calm day.

Excursions from Fehendhoo

Hanifaru Bay. The reason many people come to Baa. In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, plankton collects in this small bay off Dharavandhoo and draws large numbers of mantas, and occasionally whale sharks. Visits are snorkel only, in guided slots with a limit on time in the water, and boats from Fehendhoo cross into the main atoll for it. Sightings depend on the tide and the plankton, so a spare day helps.

Diving. Dive sites around Goidhoo Atoll include Fehendhoo Caves and the channel corners of the atoll, and guest houses arrange dives and Discover Scuba sessions with operators in the atoll.

Fulhadhoo and Goidhoo. Fulhadhoo's long white beach is a short boat ride away and makes an easy half-day trip. Goidhoo, the largest island of the atoll, has old mosques, freshwater lakes and mangroves.

Maalhos. A small village on the main Baa Atoll, a short boat ride from Hanifaru Bay, with a bikini beach and a house reef from it. The Maalhos island guide covers it.

Sandbanks, fishing and resort days. Sandbank picnics, sunset fishing and day passes to resorts in Baa Atoll can all be arranged through the guest houses.

How long to stay. Four nights at the least, five in Hanifaru season: one for the crossing, one or two for the bay with a spare in case the mantas do not show, and the rest for the beaches.

When to go

For mantas at Hanifaru Bay, the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, is the season, with more rain, wind and rougher crossings. For calm seas, clear water and long beach days, the dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, is the better time, though the Hanifaru gatherings are a monsoon event.

Who Fehendhoo isn't for

Anyone short of time. The crossing is two hours or more each way, or a flight and a boat, and two or three nights is not enough. Gulhi or Maafushi, close to the airport, suit a short trip better.

Anyone who wants restaurants, nightlife, shops or a drink. Fehendhoo has a couple of small cafés, and most meals are taken at the guest house.

Anyone who wants an over-water villa or a kids' club. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.

Common questions

How do I get to Fehendhoo from Malé airport?

By shared speedboat, about two to two and a half hours, usually leaving around 13:00 every day except Friday, or by domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a speedboat of about 40 minutes. Your guest house books either. There is no direct public ferry; the government ferry goes to Goidhoo and takes most of a day.

Can you visit Hanifaru Bay from Fehendhoo?

Yes. Hanifaru Bay lies off Dharavandhoo in the main Baa Atoll, a boat trip from Fehendhoo. Mantas gather there in the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, with occasional whale sharks. Visits are snorkel only, in guided time slots, and sightings depend on the tide and plankton.

Does Fehendhoo have a bikini beach?

Yes, two. One is about five minutes' walk from the village under a palm grove; the larger one is at the far western end, a 15 to 30 minute walk, and faces the sunset. Swimwear is allowed only on these beaches and on boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees.

Is Fehendhoo in Baa Atoll?

Administratively yes. Geographically it sits on Goidhoo Atoll, a small separate ring of reef about six miles south of the main Baa Atoll, together with the inhabited islands of Goidhoo and Fulhadhoo. Hanifaru Bay and the Dharavandhoo airport are in the main atoll, a boat ride away.

How many guest houses are there on Fehendhoo?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists seven guest houses on Fehendhoo, with 55 rooms between them, plus two home stays. Isla Retreat is the largest with 20 rooms; the rest are small family places. The full list is on this page, and any of them can be priced on request.

Fehendhoo is the quiet end of the local-island map: a village of fewer than 200 people, two empty bikini beaches and a house reef, with Hanifaru's mantas within reach in season. Give it four nights or more, choose the crossing to suit your landing time, and every guest house on Fehendhoo can be priced for your dates through the guest houses and city hotels page.
