Hangnaameedhoo is a small, quiet village island on the eastern rim of South Ari Atoll, about 71 kilometres south-west of Malé and around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Velana International Airport by shared speedboat. It has a bikini beach on its western side, a house reef that starts at the shore, and the whale shark water of South Ari within a day trip.

Fewer than five hundred people live here, and the island has barely grown since 2006. It suits couples and snorkellers who want a calm, unhurried base in South Ari, with its neighbour Omadhoo a short way to the south.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 484 people on Hangnaameedhoo, almost exactly the 481 of 2014 and only a few more than the 458 of 2006. It is a long, narrow island, under a kilometre from end to end and a little over two hundred metres across, and it can be walked in about a quarter of an hour. The lanes are sand, and most guest houses lend bicycles.

Fishing is still part of daily life, and sunset and night fishing trips go out from the harbour. There is a health centre with a pharmacy, a few small shops and a handful of cafés. A Bank of Maldives ATM has been reported on the island, but it is wise to arrive with US dollars as well.

The Ministry of Tourism register lists fourteen guest houses with 78 rooms between them, plus one home stay. VIVA Beach and Spa Maldives, with 12 rooms, and Detour Beach View, with 10, are the largest; most of the others have three to seven.

How to get to Hangnaameedhoo from Malé airport

Shared speedboat

Guest houses book a seat on a shared speedboat from the airport or Malé, and the crossing takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half in open water. The regular boat usually leaves in the afternoon, around 15:00 or 16:00, with extra departures on some days; boats back to Malé usually leave early, around 07:00. Times differ between operators, so confirm them with the guest house for your dates.

Landing at Velana after about 14:00 risks missing the boat, which means a first night near the airport. The Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.

By domestic flight

An alternative is a domestic flight from Velana to Maamigili, at the southern end of South Ari Atoll, followed by a speedboat of about half an hour. It costs more than the shared boat but helps on a late arrival or a rough day.

The public ferry

The government ferry from Malé runs a few days a week and takes five to six hours, calling at other islands on the way. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals, so check the current timetable before relying on it.

The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon for the shared speedboat, and plan an early start on the way home. Four nights gives the crossing, the reef and a whale shark day room to breathe.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Hangnaameedhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island. A resort day pass is the usual way to have a drink.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women. Ask before taking close-up photographs of people.

Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and speedboat times can change.

Things to do on Hangnaameedhoo

The bikini beach

The bikini beach is on the western side of the island, a five to ten minute walk from most guest houses, with sunbeds and hammocks set out by the guest houses. The western tip is the place for the sunset.

The house reef

The reef can be reached straight from the shore. A wide, shallow lagoon acts as a nursery for reef fish, and the drop-off is not far out. Blacktip reef sharks, eagle rays, green and hawksbill turtles, moray eels and octopus are all seen. Currents are usually gentle, but snorkel with someone and ask locally where to get in, and expect strong wind to cut snorkelling short in the wetter months.

Diving

A PADI dive centre on the island runs fun dives, courses and Discover Scuba sessions for first-timers. The thilas and channels of South Ari are a short boat ride away, with reef sharks, rays and, in season, mantas.

The village and the cafés

A few small cafés serve grilled reef fish, curries, fried rice and pasta, alongside the guest-house restaurants. Food is cooked to order and can take the best part of an hour, so order ahead and go back to the beach. Evenings are very quiet.

Excursions from Hangnaameedhoo

Whale sharks. Trips go south to the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen year-round. It is a longer run than from Dhigurah or Dhangethi, which sit beside the whale shark area. Sightings are likely rather than guaranteed.

Sandbanks and safari snorkelling. Half-day trips to a sandbank or uninhabited island, usually with stops at two or more reefs.

Fishing and dolphins. Sunset and night fishing, often with the catch cooked afterwards, and late-afternoon dolphin cruises.

Omadhoo. The next local island to the south, a quieter village with a long house reef. The Omadhoo island guide covers it.

Resort days. Day passes to South Ari resorts, with transfers, lunch and the pool, can be arranged through the guest houses.

How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, two days on the reef and a whale shark trip with a spare day in case the first is unlucky.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas, clear water and the gentlest crossing from Malé. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings wind, rain and rougher boat rides, but quieter islands and lower rates. Whale sharks are seen in every month.

Who Hangnaameedhoo isn't for

Anyone who wants cafés, shops and things going on in the evening. Hangnaameedhoo is small and very quiet; Maafushi has far more choice.

Anyone whose main goal is whale sharks. Dhigurah and Dhangethi are next to the whale shark area, so the trip is shorter.

Anyone short of time, or who wants a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. Gulhi, near the airport, suits a short trip, and the trade-off with a resort is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.
