Hulhumalé is a planned city built on reclaimed land next to the airport island, about ten minutes by car from Velana International Airport. It is the easiest place in the Maldives to spend a night before or after a resort or island stay, with a long public beach, buses and taxis at any hour, and no boat to catch.

It is not a holiday island. Hulhumalé is a working suburb of the capital, home to more than 65,000 people, with apartment blocks, schools, offices and a hospital. Treat it as a comfortable, convenient stopover with a beach, and it does that job very well.

A city built from the sea

Malé, the capital, ran out of room decades ago. In October 1997 dredgers began pumping sand from the seabed onto the shallow lagoon north-east of the airport island, and a new island slowly rose from the reef. The first phase, about 188 hectares, was finished in 2002, and about a thousand people moved in during 2004. A second phase of about 244 hectares, to the north, was completed in 2015, taking the island to around four square kilometres.

The two phases still feel different. Phase 1, the older southern half, has the beach, the guest houses, most of the cafés and restaurants, and streets laid out on a grid that is easy to walk. Phase 2 is newer and taller, with high-rise housing, wide roads and a large central park, and it sits further from the beach.

The island is run by the government's Housing Development Corporation and falls under the Malé City Council. The 2022 census counted 35,859 people in Phase 1 and 29,855 in Phase 2. It is built to grow, and building work is a constant part of the view.

Getting to Hulhumalé from the airport

This is the whole point of Hulhumalé. There is no boat, no timetable to fit and no weather to worry about. The airport island and Hulhumalé are joined by road, and the drive takes about ten minutes.

The hotel car

Most hotels in Hulhumalé meet guests in the arrivals hall and drive them over. Both Hulhumalé hotels on this site include a shared car to and from the airport in the price, and it meets every flight, at any hour. The shared car may wait 20 to 30 minutes for other guests landing at about the same time.

Taxis and buses

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall around the clock, and the fares to Hulhumalé are fixed by the government. Public buses run from the airport to Hulhumalé roughly every 30 minutes from about 06:00 until after midnight, with one route for Phase 1 and another for Phase 2. Buses pause for midday prayers on Fridays, and timings change during Ramadan.

Going on to Malé

The Sinamalé Bridge, opened in 2018, joins the airport island to Malé, so Hulhumalé and the capital are now a short bus or taxi ride apart. Malé has the fish market, the old mosques, the museum and far more shops and restaurants, and it makes an easy half-day trip. The Malé city guide covers the sights, and Villimalé, a quiet island ward ten minutes from Malé by ferry, has its own guide.

Why a night here matters. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and many resort and guest-house boats stop in the early evening. Land late, and the onward transfer often cannot leave until the next morning. A night in Hulhumalé turns that wait into a proper bed and a beach walk, and the hotel car brings you back to the airport, the domestic terminal or the seaplane terminal in the morning.

Who stays in Hulhumalé, and when

After a late landing. Anyone arriving at Velana in the evening or at night, with a resort reached by seaplane or a guest-house island reached by speedboat the next day.

Before an early domestic flight or seaplane. Resorts in the far atolls are reached by a domestic flight and then a boat. Starting from Hulhumalé, ten minutes from the terminal, takes the stress out of a morning departure.

Before the flight home. Many flights to India leave Malé in the afternoon or evening. A last night in Hulhumalé after an island stay means no early boat on departure day, and some guests use it to fit in a day in Malé.

On a budget. Travellers who want a few nights near the airport and a beach without paying resort prices, with day trips by boat from the town.

Rules worth knowing

Alcohol. Hulhumalé is part of the capital and, like every inhabited island in the Maldives, it is dry. No hotel, café or shop sells alcohol. The hotel on the airport island itself, Hulhule Island Hotel, is the nearest place with a bar.

Dress and the beach. Bikinis are not allowed on Hulhumalé's public beaches, and guest houses were reminded to tell their guests this in December 2025, after a rise in incidents. Swim in a T-shirt and shorts or other modest swimwear. In town, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women, and do not walk the streets shirtless.

Fridays and prayer times. Shops, cafés and offices close for the main Friday prayer around midday, and buses and ferries pause. On other days, some shops close briefly at each prayer time.

Ramadan. During the fasting month, eating, drinking and smoking in public in daylight are avoided. Hotels serve guests indoors.

Things to do in Hulhumalé

The beach

A long man-made beach runs down the eastern side of Phase 1, with shallow water, shade trees and a promenade behind it. It is busiest in the evening, when families come out after work and the cafés along the beach road fill up. It is a town beach, not a resort beach: the water is clean and good for a swim, but there is no house reef and little to see with a mask.

Eating out

Hulhumalé has a far better choice of food than any local island. The beach road and the streets behind it are lined with cafés and restaurants serving Maldivian short eats, fish curry and grilled reef fish, alongside Indian, Thai, Chinese and Western food. Vegetarian food is easy to find, and all the meat is halal.

Walking and cycling

The flat, planned streets of Phase 1 are made for an evening walk or a bicycle ride, and the beach promenade catches the sea breeze. The central park in Phase 2 is a large green space, popular with local families in the cooler hours.

Shopping and errands

A stopover is the cheapest time to buy what a resort charges heavily for: sunscreen, a local SIM card, snacks and a plug adapter. Supermarkets, pharmacies and ATMs are all within walking distance of the guest houses in Phase 1.

Day trips from Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé sits at the southern end of North Malé Atoll, and boat trips leave from its harbour and jetties every day. Hotels and the local excursion desks sell the same core trips.

Snorkelling and sandbank. A half day to the reefs and sandbanks of North Malé Atoll, the best way to see the underwater life that the town beach lacks.

Dolphin cruise. A sunset trip to look for the spinner dolphins that feed in the channels around the atoll.

Diving. Dive centres in Hulhumalé run boat dives to the North Malé channels and reefs, as well as try-dives and full courses for beginners.

Surfing. The surf breaks of North Malé Atoll, at their best from roughly March to October, are a short boat ride away, and surf schools work from Hulhumalé.

Resort day pass. A day on a resort island near Malé, with lunch, the pool, the beach, the house reef and, on a resort, a drink.

The local islands. Hulhumalé is a natural first or last night either side of a local-island stay. The Thulusdhoo and Dhiffushi guides cover two North Malé islands, and the Maafushi guide covers the busiest island in the south.

How long to stay. One night covers a late landing or an early flight. Two nights leave a day for a snorkelling trip or Malé. More than three, and most travellers would be happier on a local island or a resort, with Hulhumalé at either end.

When to go

As a stopover, Hulhumalé works in every month. The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas and sunshine for the beach and the day trips. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers, wind and the odd cancelled boat trip, which makes a night near the airport even more useful when sea transfers are delayed.

Hotels and guest houses in Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé has 58 registered guest houses, with about 820 rooms between them. Most are small city hotels of ten to thirty rooms, mainly in Phase 1 near the beach. The two below are on this site, with their rooms, meal plans and airport car set out on their own pages. The full register follows them.

Who Hulhumalé isn't for

Anyone looking for a beach holiday on its own. Hulhumalé is a city, the views from most rooms are of other buildings, and the beach is public and busy in the evenings.

Anyone who wants a drink, a bikini on the beach or reef snorkelling from the shore. None of them are on offer here. A resort or a local island with a bikini beach does those things far better.

Honeymooners who want the Maldives of the brochures. One night here before a resort is fine; a week here is not the holiday most couples have in mind. The trade-off between islands is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.

Common questions

How far is Hulhumalé from Malé airport?

About ten minutes by car. Hulhumalé sits beside the airport island and is joined to it by road. Taxis wait outside arrivals at all hours, public buses run about every 30 minutes from early morning until after midnight, and many hotels send their own car to meet each flight.

Is Hulhumalé worth staying in?

As a stopover, yes. It is the most convenient place to sleep after a late landing or before an early flight, seaplane or domestic connection, with a beach, plenty of restaurants and no boat to catch. As a holiday base for a week, most travellers are happier on a resort or a local island.

Can you wear a bikini in Hulhumalé?

No. Bikinis are not allowed on Hulhumalé's public beaches, and guest houses were reminded to tell guests this in December 2025. Swim in modest swimwear, such as a T-shirt and shorts, and cover shoulders and knees in town. For a bikini beach, choose a local island with a designated tourist beach, or a resort.

Hulhumalé or Malé for a night near the airport?

Hulhumalé suits most travellers better. It is closer to the airport, quieter, and has a long beach and more space. Malé is the better choice for a full day of sightseeing, with the fish market, mosques and museum, and it is a short ride across the Sinamalé Bridge. The Malé city guide covers it in full.

How many hotels are there in Hulhumalé?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists 58 tourist guest houses with Hulhumalé addresses, with about 820 rooms between them. Most are small city hotels of ten to thirty rooms near the beach in Phase 1, such as Ocean Grand, Aina Residency and h78. The full list is on this page.

Is there alcohol in Hulhumalé?

No. Hulhumalé is an inhabited island and part of the capital, so no hotel, café or shop sells alcohol. The nearest bar is at Hulhule Island Hotel on the airport island. A resort day pass from Hulhumalé is the other way to have a drink.

How do you get from Hulhumalé to Malé?

By road, across the Sinamalé Bridge, which joined the airport island to Malé in 2018. Public buses link Hulhumalé, the airport and Malé, and a taxi is quicker. Buses pause for midday prayers on Fridays.

Hulhumalé is the Maldives' most practical night: ten minutes from the terminal, open at every hour, with a beach to walk at sunset and a good dinner within a few streets. Use it for the night you land late, the morning you fly early, or the last day before home, and save the long stay for the islands. Both Hulhumalé hotels on this site are priced for your dates, airport car included, on the guest houses and city hotels page.
