Dhiddhoo island guide: a tiny South Ari island for whale sharks and diving

The sun rising through clouds over calm water and low islands in southern Ari Atoll

Dhiddhoo is one of the smallest guest-house islands in the Maldives: a strip of land about 1.5 kilometres long and 150 metres wide on the southern rim of South Ari Atoll, home to about 140 people. It is a few kilometres from Maamigili's airport, a short boat ride from the LUX* South Ari Atoll resort, and close to the whale shark waters of the South Ari Marine Protected Area.

There is very little on the island beyond a village, a handful of guest houses and the reef, which is the point. For divers and snorkellers who want a tiny, quiet base in the whale shark part of the atoll, it is worth a look.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 141 people on Dhiddhoo, a very small community even by Maldivian standards. The village is a few sand lanes and houses, with a handful of small cafés and shops, and serious medical cases go to the atoll hospital on Mahibadhoo or to Malé. The island's name is often spelled Dhidhdhoo, as it is on the tourism register.

The Ministry of Tourism register lists five guest houses on Dhiddhoo with 37 rooms between them. Waterside Maldives, with 18 rooms, is the largest; the rest have three to six. One of them, Dive and Sleep Retreat, is built around diving.

How to get to Dhiddhoo from Malé airport

Shared speedboat

Shared speedboats from Malé and the airport take about two hours in open water and run on a limited schedule, not on Fridays. Guest houses book the seat; confirm the times for your dates. A late landing usually means a first night near the airport; the Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.

Domestic flight and speedboat

Maamigili, with South Ari's airport, is a few kilometres away, so a domestic flight followed by a short speedboat is the quickest way in and suits a later landing. The Maamigili guide covers the airport island.

The short version. Fly to Maamigili and take the short boat across, or land by early afternoon for the shared speedboat. Give it four nights or more.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Dhiddhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the designated beach and on excursion boats; ask the guest house where it is. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

Money. Carry enough US dollars or rufiyaa for the stay, as cash is the norm on so small an island.

Fridays. Shops close around midday prayers, and boats do not usually run.

Things to do on Dhiddhoo

The reef

The reef can be reached from the shore, with a shallow reef flat dropping away to deeper water, and reef fish, rays and young reef sharks can be seen. Coral condition varies, so ask locally where the best stretch is and when the current is easiest.

Whale sharks

Dhiddhoo lies on the southern rim of South Ari Atoll, between Maamigili and Dhigurah, close to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen in every month. Boats must follow the protected area's rules, including registration and propeller guards, and the number of people in the water near a shark is limited.

Diving

Diving is the main activity on the island. Dives and courses are arranged through the guest houses, and the thilas, channels and wrecks of South Ari are within reach by boat.

Excursions from Dhiddhoo

Sandbanks and fishing. Sandbank picnics, night fishing and snorkelling trips to the reefs nearby.

Island hopping. Maamigili is next door, and Dhigurah, with its long beach, and Fenfushi, with its coral-stone mosque, are along the rim.

Resort days. The LUX* South Ari Atoll resort is a short boat ride away; ask the guest house whether a day visit can be arranged.

How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, a whale shark day, a dive or two and a sandbank. Divers usually stay a week.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas and the clearest water. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers, wind and rougher crossings, but quieter islands and lower rates. Whale sharks are seen all year.

Who Dhiddhoo isn't for

Anyone who wants cafés, shops or things to do in the evening. Dhiddhoo is tiny and quiet; Dhigurah has far more choice in South Ari.

Anyone short of time. The crossing is about two hours by boat, or a flight and a boat; Gulhi, near the airport, suits a short trip.

Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.

Common questions

How do I get to Dhiddhoo from Malé airport?

The quickest way is a domestic flight to Maamigili, a few kilometres away, and a short speedboat. Shared speedboats from Malé take about two hours on a limited schedule and do not usually run on Fridays. Your guest house books either.

Which Dhiddhoo is this?

This guide is about Dhiddhoo, also spelled Dhidhdhoo, in Alif Dhaal, the South Ari Atoll. It is not Dhidhdhoo, the capital of Haa Alif in the far north, and not Dhidhoofinolhu, the island of the LUX* South Ari Atoll resort next door.

Can you see whale sharks from Dhiddhoo?

Yes. Dhiddhoo is on the southern rim of South Ari Atoll, close to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen in every month. Trips follow the protected area's rules on boats and swimmers, and are arranged through the guest houses.

How big is Dhiddhoo?

About 1.5 kilometres long and 150 metres wide, with 141 residents at the 2022 census, so it is one of the smallest inhabited islands with guest houses. Most visitors come for the reef, diving and whale sharks rather than for things to do on the island.

How many guest houses are there on Dhiddhoo?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists five guest houses on Dhiddhoo, with 37 rooms between them. Waterside Maldives is the largest with 18 rooms. The full list is on this page, and any of them can be priced on request.

Dhiddhoo is South Ari at its smallest: a village of about 140 people, a reef from the shore and the whale shark waters of the southern rim close by, with Maamigili's airport a few kilometres away. Fly in or take the boat, give it four nights, and every guest house on Dhiddhoo can be priced for your dates through the guest houses and city hotels page.
