Omadhoo island guide: South Ari whale sharks, the house reef and where to stay
In this article
Omadhoo is a quiet whale-shark island in South Ari Atoll: a village of about 900 people roughly 74 kilometres south-west of Malé, an hour and a half to two hours from Velana International Airport by shared speedboat, and a short boat ride from the whale shark waters off Maamigili. It has a bikini beach on the west side and a house reef that runs for about a kilometre along the shore.
It sits between the busier whale-shark islands of Dhigurah and Dhangethi, with fewer guest houses and calmer evenings. For travellers who want the same sea and an emptier village, it is the one to look at.

Omadhoo at a glance
Population and island life
The 2022 census counted 913 people on Omadhoo, up from 843 in 2014. It is a small fishing village with a school, a mosque, a health centre for minor problems, a few shops and a handful of local restaurants, among them Athiri, Mazaaraa and the Kahanbu Ocean Front. A Bank of Maldives ATM has been reported, but many small places take cash only, so carry US dollars or rufiyaa.
There are two islands called Omadhoo in the Maldives. This one is in Alifu Dhaalu, the South Ari Atoll; the other is in Thaa Atoll, far to the south. Check the atoll when booking a guest house or a boat.
The Ministry of Tourism register lists sixteen guest houses on Omadhoo, with 84 rooms between them, plus two home stays. Avenly Omadhoo and Kashiveli Omadhoo, with ten rooms each, are the largest; most of the others have three to six.
How to get to Omadhoo from Malé airport
Shared speedboat
Shared speedboats leave Malé and the airport usually around 10:00 and 14:30, and the crossing takes about an hour and a half to two hours in open water. Guest houses book the seat and meet you at the airport. Landing at Velana after about 14:00 usually means missing the last boat and spending the first night in Hulhumalé.
The public ferry
The government ferry runs from Malé a few times a week, calling at Mahibadhoo, the atoll capital, before Omadhoo, and takes most of a day. It does not run on Fridays and suits only travellers with time to spare.
Domestic flight
Maamigili, the next island south, has a domestic airport. A flight and a speedboat from there is possible, but for most trips the direct speedboat from Velana is simpler.
The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon and take the shared speedboat, about two hours. Give it four nights or more so a whale shark trip can be tried more than once.
Island rules worth knowing
Alcohol. None is sold or served on Omadhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island. Resort day passes are the usual way to have a drink.
Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. The public beach beside it and the village need shoulders and knees covered, men as well as women.
Whale sharks. Keep at least a few metres away, never touch or chase the shark, and do not use flash. Guides brief every group before entering the water.
Fridays. Shops and restaurants close around midday prayers, and the ferry does not run.
Things to do on Omadhoo
Whale sharks
South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks are seen in every month of the year, and the stretch of outer reef off Maamigili is where most encounters happen. Boats from Omadhoo reach it in a short ride, and guest houses run whale shark trips most days, often combined with snorkelling and a sandbank stop. Sightings are never guaranteed, so a stay of four nights gives two or three chances.
The bikini beach and the house reef

The bikini beach is on the western side of the island, a stretch of white sand with some shade. The house reef runs for about a kilometre along the shore, with at least two easy entry points from the beach, and eagle rays are often seen along its central section, along with reef fish, turtles and reef sharks. Currents can be moderate to strong, so take fins and snorkel with someone. In the early evening, stingrays and young reef sharks gather by the fishing pier.
Diving
The South Ari sites are within easy reach, among them Kuda Rah Thila, a pinnacle rising from about 30 metres for more experienced divers, and Broken Rock, a reef split by a narrow canyon. Dives and courses are arranged through the guest houses with operators in the atoll.
Excursions from Omadhoo
Sandbanks. Picnic trips to the uninhabited sandbanks of South Ari are the classic day out, and some include an overnight stay.
Dhigurah and Dhangethi. The two neighbouring whale-shark islands are a short boat ride away. Dhigurah has a long bikini beach and the whale shark research programme, and Dhangethi is a settled boat-building island on the edge of the protected area.
Hangnaameedhoo. The next local island to the north, a long, narrow village with a house reef from the shore and a sunset beach. The Hangnaameedhoo island guide covers it.
Maamigili. The island with South Ari's domestic airport, beside the whale shark reef of Maamigili Beyru. The Maamigili island guide covers it.
Resort days. Day passes to South Ari resorts, such as Lily Beach and Centara Grand, can be arranged through the guest houses.
Fishing. Sunset and night fishing trips, often with the catch grilled afterwards.
How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, two whale shark attempts, a sandbank day and time on the house reef. Divers usually stay a week.
When to go
Whale sharks can be seen all year in South Ari. The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calmer seas and the clearest water for the house reef. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more wind, rain and rougher crossings, but quieter islands and lower rates, and plankton in the water that draws mantas to the area.

Who Omadhoo isn't for
Anyone short of time. The crossing is up to two hours each way, and two nights is not enough for the whale sharks. Maafushi runs South Ari day trips from near the airport, with a long crossing each way.
Anyone who wants the most choice of cafés and trips. Dhigurah, next door, has more guest houses and a longer bikini beach.
Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.
