Dhangethi island guide: whale sharks, getting there and where to stay
In this article
Dhangethi is an inhabited island in South Ari Atoll, about 88 kilometres south-west of Malé and around one and a half to two hours from the airport by scheduled speedboat. Its reason to exist on a holiday shortlist is the whale shark: the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen in every month of the year, is a short boat ride away.
It is a small, settled fishing and boat-building island of under a thousand people, with a bikini beach, reef within reach of the shore and very few visitors compared with the islands near Malé.

Dhangethi at a glance
Population and island life
The 2022 census counted 936 people on Dhangethi: 718 Maldivians and 218 foreign nationals. It is one of the larger communities in Alif Dhaal Atoll, with a school that is among the biggest in the atoll, a health centre, a court, a cultural centre, a traditional mosque and a football ground.
Fishing, handicrafts, boat building and carpentry have long been the island's trades. Today tourism earns the most, and many of the island's young men work at the resorts nearby. Guest houses followed, and Dhangethi now has 21 registered with the Ministry of Tourism, almost all small, with about 185 rooms between them.
Like every inhabited island in the Maldives, Dhangethi is Muslim and Dhivehi is spoken at home. Ask before taking close-up photographs of people.
How to get to Dhangethi from Malé airport
The scheduled speedboat
This is the usual way in. Scheduled speedboats cross from Malé and the airport to South Ari in around one and a half to two hours, on a timetable that has typically run a late-morning and an afternoon departure, with different times on Fridays. The crossing is in open water and can be lively when the wind is up. The boats run to the timetable, not to your flight, and the afternoon boat is the last of the day, so if you land too late for it, plan a night in Malé or Hulhumalé. Each hotel confirms the departure that fits your flight.
By domestic flight
An alternative is a domestic flight from Velana to Maamigili, at the southern tip of South Ari Atoll, followed by a speedboat of about half an hour. It costs more than the scheduled boat but is quicker and gentler on a rough day.
The public ferry
There is no direct public ferry. Reaching Dhangethi by government ferry means changing boats in Alif Dhaal and takes most of a day, so it is not practical for a holiday with an international flight at each end.
The short version. Dhangethi is one of the longer speedboat transfers from Malé. Land in time for the day's last boat, and stay at least four nights so the whale shark trip has room for a second try if the first day is unlucky.
Island rules worth knowing
Alcohol. None is served on Dhangethi, and none may be brought ashore. A resort day pass is the usual way to have a drink.
Dress. Swimwear is for the bikini beach and the boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.
Cash. There is one ATM, which dispenses rufiyaa and is not always in service. Bring US dollars from the airport. Hotels often take cards, sometimes with a surcharge; local cafés prefer cash in rufiyaa.
Fridays. Friday is the weekly holy day, shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and boat timetables change.
Things to do on Dhangethi
Whale sharks
The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme calls the whale sharks along South Ari Atoll's southern rim a globally significant aggregation. The programme has identified several hundred individual sharks here, most of them young males, and many return to the area year after year. Unlike most whale shark sites, there is no single season: they are seen in every month. Trips leave from Dhangethi most mornings, cruise the outer reef until the spotters find a shark, then put snorkellers in the water beside it. Sightings are likely rather than guaranteed, and the calmer seas between December and April make the trips easier to run.
The rules protect the sharks: keep a respectful distance, never touch or ride them, no flash photography, and let the guide decide when to enter the water. Choose an operator that follows the marine protected area's code of conduct.
The bikini beach and the reef
Dhangethi's bikini beach is on the eastern side of the island, a short walk from the village, and it is the only place for swimwear. Reef lies within reach of the shore on the eastern and southern sides, with reef fish, rays, blacktip reef sharks and turtles. Currents pick up at the change of the tide, so snorkel with someone and ask locally where to get in.
Diving
South Ari is one of the finest diving areas in the country, and Dhangethi has its own dive centre. Sites nearby include reef pinnacles, a deeper wreck for experienced divers, and manta cleaning stations that are seasonal. Whale sharks are sometimes met on dives along the outer reef.
The village
Dhangethi is small enough to walk end to end. There are three or four places to eat on the main road, serving Maldivian dishes such as mas huni at breakfast, garudhiya fish broth and tuna curry, and several small shops. Evenings are quiet.
Excursions from Dhangethi
Whale shark snorkelling. The main event, usually a morning trip along the southern outer reef.
Nurse sharks and turtles. Snorkelling trips to reefs where nurse sharks and turtles are common.
Fishing. Sunset, night and big-game fishing trips.
Watersports. Kayaking, and kitesurfing in the windier months.
Resort day passes. South Ari has many resorts within a short boat ride, and several sell day passes with lunch and drinks.
Dhigurah. The neighbouring local island, a short boat ride away, has a long bikini beach and a sandbank at its tip. The Dhigurah island guide covers it, and Omadhoo, a quieter village with a kilometre of house reef, is also close by.
Maamigili. The largest island in the atoll, with its own domestic airport and the whale shark reef of Maamigili Beyru beside it. The Maamigili island guide covers it.
Mahibadhoo, Fenfushi and Dhiddhoo. Mahibadhoo, the atoll capital, is a short way north, and Fenfushi, with its coral-stone mosque, and tiny Dhiddhoo lie further west along the southern rim.
How long to stay. Four or five nights. That allows a whale shark trip with a spare day for a second attempt, a diving or snorkelling day and a beach day.
When to go
Whale sharks are seen all year, so there is no wrong month. The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings the calmest crossing from Malé, the best visibility and the easiest conditions for whale shark trips. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings wind, rain and rougher boat rides, but quieter islands and the season for some manta sites.

Who Dhangethi isn't for
Anyone short of time, or uneasy on small boats in open water. The crossing is one of the longest of the speedboat islands, and two nights is not enough.
Anyone who wants a choice of restaurants, nightlife or a drink. Dhangethi has a handful of local cafés and very quiet evenings.
Anyone who wants to combine several local islands near Malé. For that, Maafushi and Gulhi are closer, and they run whale shark day trips to South Ari too, at the cost of a much longer day.

Common questions
How far is Dhangethi from Malé airport?
About 88 kilometres south-west, in South Ari Atoll. The scheduled speedboat takes around one and a half to two hours, and runs at different times on Fridays. A faster alternative is a domestic flight to Maamigili and a speedboat of about half an hour.
Can you see whale sharks from Dhangethi?
Yes. Dhangethi is a short boat ride from the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen year-round and the same individuals return again and again. Trips usually leave in the morning. Sightings are likely but never guaranteed, so allow a spare day.
Is there a bikini beach on Dhangethi?
Yes, on the eastern side of the island, a short walk from the village. It is the only place on the island for swimwear. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.
Dhangethi or Maafushi for whale sharks?
Dhangethi. It sits beside the whale shark area, so the trip is a short morning out rather than a long day from South Malé Atoll. Maafushi has more cafés and activities and an easier transfer, but its whale shark trips involve a long crossing each way.
How many guest houses are there on Dhangethi?
The Ministry of Tourism register lists 21 guest houses on Dhangethi, with about 185 rooms between them, and newer properties are opening. Most are small, with three to sixteen rooms. The full list is on this page.
Is there an ATM on Dhangethi?
There is one, which dispenses rufiyaa and is sometimes out of service. Bring US dollars from Velana International Airport. Hotels often take cards; local cafés usually prefer rufiyaa in cash.
Dhangethi is a local island for whale shark trips: a quiet South Ari village, a reef by the beach and whale sharks in every month of the year on the doorstep. It asks for a longer boat ride and a longer stay, and rewards both. The Dhangethi hotel on this site is priced on request, with the scheduled speedboat included, through the guest houses and city hotels page.
