Himandhoo island guide: Ari Atoll's quiet diving village, the thila and where to stay
In this article
Himandhoo is a small fishing village on the western rim of Ari Atoll, about 90 kilometres west of Malé and around an hour and a half to two hours from Velana International Airport by speedboat. It has a bikini beach on its northern shore, a sheltered lagoon with a reef from the beach, and Himandhoo Thila, one of Ari's manta and shark dives, in the channel next door.
Under nine hundred people live here, and it sees far fewer visitors than Ukulhas or Rasdhoo. For divers and snorkellers who want a quiet village base in the middle of Ari Atoll, it is worth a look.

Himandhoo at a glance
Population and island life
The 2022 census counted 885 people on Himandhoo, up from 667 in 2014 and 515 in 2006. It is a traditional fishing and boat-building village with an old mosque, a small medical centre and pharmacy, a few shops and cafés, and a harbour rebuilt in 2020. A Bank of Maldives ATM has operated since late 2024, but most small cafés take cash only.
The Ministry of Tourism register lists seven guest houses on Himandhoo with 36 rooms between them. Manta Sea View, with 12 rooms, is the largest; the rest have three to six.
How to get to Himandhoo from Malé airport
Speedboat
Guest houses arrange the speedboat from the airport, shared or private, and the crossing takes about an hour and a half to two hours in open water. Book a few days ahead in the busy season. Landing at Velana after about 15:00 usually means a first night near the airport; the Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.
Seaplane
A seaplane to a resort nearby, followed by a short speedboat, is a faster but more expensive option. Seaplanes fly in daylight only.
The public ferry
The government ferry from Malé runs a few days a week and takes most of a day, often with a connection. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals, so check the current timetable before relying on it.
The short version. Land by early afternoon and take the speedboat the guest house books. Give it four nights or more, especially if you are coming to dive.
Island rules worth knowing
Alcohol. None is sold or served on Himandhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island. A resort day trip or a licensed safari boat is the usual way to have a drink.
Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women. Ask before taking close-up photographs of people.
Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and boat times can change.
Things to do on Himandhoo
The beaches
The bikini beach is on the northern shore, and a beach on the western side is the place for sunset. Neither has resort loungers, but guest houses put out simple seating and the palms give shade. On most days they are close to empty.
The house reef
The reef can be snorkelled straight from the shore. The lagoon is sheltered from strong currents, which suits newer snorkellers and children, and the reef wall beyond has small caves, reef fish and rays. Drift snorkelling in the channels is a different matter, as the current can run hard; go with a guide.
Diving
Himandhoo Thila, in the channel between Himandhoo and the resort island of Moofushi, is a reef of canyons and overhangs where mantas, grey reef sharks, barracuda and Napoleon wrasse are seen, best from about December to April. A manta cleaning station lies off the north-west corner of the island's reef. Several dive centres work from the island, including a PADI five-star centre, and run courses as well as guided dives.
Excursions from Himandhoo
Sandbanks and snorkelling. Trips to the reefs and uninhabited sandbanks nearby, sometimes with dolphins on the way.
Fishing. Hand-line fishing with local fishermen, sunset fishing with the catch cooked for dinner, and big-game trips.
Resort days. Day passes to resorts in the atoll can be arranged through the guest houses.
The rest of Ari. The other Ari islands on this site, among them Mathiveri, Feridhoo and Ukulhas, have their own guides.
How long to stay. Four nights covers two or three dives or snorkel trips, a sandbank and time on the house reef. Divers usually stay a week.
When to go
The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas, the clearest water and the best manta season at Himandhoo Thila. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers, wind and rougher crossings, but quieter islands and lower rates.

Who Himandhoo isn't for
Anyone who wants a choice of cafés and things to do in the evening. Himandhoo is small and quiet; Thoddoo and Ukulhas are livelier Ari islands.
Anyone short of time. The crossing is up to two hours each way; Gulhi, near the airport, suits a short trip.
Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Common questions
How do I get to Himandhoo from Malé airport?
By speedboat from the airport, about an hour and a half to two hours, booked through your guest house. A seaplane to a nearby resort and a short boat is quicker but costs more, and the public ferry runs a few days a week and takes most of a day.
Is Himandhoo good for diving?
Yes. Himandhoo Thila, in the channel next to the island, is known for mantas, grey reef sharks and barracuda, best from about December to April, and there is a manta cleaning station off the island's reef. Several dive centres on the island run guided dives and courses.
Does Himandhoo have a bikini beach?
Yes, on the northern shore, with a sunset beach on the western side. Swimwear is allowed only there and on boats; in the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women. The house reef can be snorkelled from the shore in a sheltered lagoon.
Is there an ATM on Himandhoo?
Yes. A Bank of Maldives ATM has operated on the island since late 2024. US dollars are widely accepted by guest houses and dive centres, but carry some rufiyaa, as most small cafés and shops take cash only.
