Thoddoo is a farming island in Alif Alif Atoll, about 67 kilometres west of Malé and an hour to an hour and a half from Velana International Airport by speedboat. It has more registered guest houses than any local island outside Malé City, two bikini beaches, a turtle-filled house reef and fields of watermelon and papaya that supply much of the country.

It is greener and more spread out than most local islands, and it feels it. Days here mean cycling between farms and beaches, snorkelling with turtles off the shore, and boat trips to the manta and shark sites of Ari Atoll.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 1,924 people on Thoddoo: 1,529 Maldivians and 395 foreign nationals. The island sits on its own small ring of reef, north of the main Ari Atoll, and is run as part of Alif Alif.

Farming is what sets Thoddoo apart. It is the largest grower of watermelon in the Maldives, with much of the crop timed for Ramadan, when demand in Malé is highest, and it also grows papaya, bananas, passion fruit, mango and betel leaf. Fields and plantations fill much of the interior of the island.

The island also holds one of the Maldives' few visible traces of its Buddhist past: the mound of an old temple, where islanders buried their Buddha statue after the conversion to Islam in 1153. Guest-house tourism arrived in 2015, and Thoddoo now has 74 registered guest houses with about 530 rooms. Most are small family-run houses of four to ten rooms.

How to get to Thoddoo from Malé airport

The shared speedboat

Guest houses book a seat on a shared speedboat from Velana International Airport, and the crossing takes about an hour to an hour and a half in open water. There are usually one or two departures a day, typically mid-morning and mid-afternoon, so landing by early afternoon is the safe rule. The crossing can be rough in the wetter months. Anyone landing in the evening needs a night in Hulhumalé first.

From India, the direct IndiGo flight from Bengaluru lands at Velana at 15:00 in winter and 14:15 in summer, which can be tight for the afternoon boat. Check your guest house's boat time against your flight before booking.

The seaplane

Since February 2026 the domestic airline Maldivian has flown a scheduled seaplane to Thoddoo on Thursdays and Saturdays. Seaplanes fly only in daylight. Ask for the current schedule and fare when you book.

The public ferry

The MTCC ferry to Thoddoo runs only a few days a week and takes several hours, calling at Rasdhoo and Ukulhas on the way. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals in Malé. Check the current timetable with MTCC before relying on it.

Coming home

Speedboats back to the airport usually leave Thoddoo early in the morning, often around 07:00. For an afternoon flight home, that works well. For an early-morning flight, spend the last night in Hulhumalé.

The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon and check the boat time first. Thoddoo is far enough out that a missed boat means a night near the airport, so the Hulhumalé guide is worth a look.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Thoddoo, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beaches. Swimwear is for the two bikini beaches and the excursion boats. In the village and on the farm roads, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

Fridays and prayer times. Friday is the weekly holy day, and shops and cafés close around midday prayers.

The farms. The fields are private and worked every day. Visit with a guided farm tour, or ask before walking onto a plot.

Things to do on Thoddoo

The two bikini beaches

Thoddoo has two designated tourist beaches. Sunrise Bikini Beach, on the north-east side near the village, is smaller and quieter. Sunset Bikini Beach, on the west side, is larger and is where most guests go to watch the sun go down. Both have loungers, showers and toilets.

Snorkelling the house reef

Thoddoo's house reef runs for kilometres around the island and is known for turtles, including young ones. A shallower section about 200 metres off the north-east beach suits beginners, and the richer reef lies further out. Only swim out where the guest house or the beach staff say it is safe, as currents can be strong at the edges.

The farms and the fruit

Guided farm tours walk through the watermelon fields and papaya plantations, often ending with fresh fruit. Most guest houses lend bicycles, which is the best way to get between the village, the farms and the beaches.

Cafés

Thoddoo has a good spread of small cafés and guest-house restaurants for a local island, serving Maldivian, Asian and Western food, and fresh fruit juices.

Excursions from Thoddoo

Manta rays. Mantas visit cleaning stations in North Ari, mainly from about November to March. Madivaru Corner at Rasdhoo, about 20 minutes by speedboat, is the usual site.

Diving. Two dive centres work from the island, diving Thoddoo's own reefs and the sites around Rasdhoo, where hammerheads are sometimes seen at dawn.

Whale sharks. A long full-day trip to South Ari Atoll, where whale sharks are seen year-round. The Dhigurah guide covers the island closest to them.

Sandbanks, island hopping and resort days. Picnic trips to sandbanks, visits to Rasdhoo and Ukulhas, and day passes at nearby resorts such as Kuramathi and Veligandu. The Ukulhas guide covers its neighbour.

How long to stay. Four nights covers a farm tour, a snorkelling day on the house reef, a manta trip and a sunset on the west beach. The transfer is long enough that three nights is the sensible minimum.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas for the crossing, clear water and the manta season. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers and rougher crossings, but quieter beaches and lower rates. Watermelons are at their peak before Ramadan.

Who Thoddoo isn't for

Anyone who wants a drink with dinner, or nightlife. Thoddoo is dry and goes quiet after dark.

Anyone on a short trip or who dislikes boats. The crossing is an hour or more in open water, and the boats run to a fixed timetable. For two or three nights, an island in South Malé Atoll such as Maafushi wastes less time in transit.

Couples who want an over-water villa or a private beach. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.

Common questions

How do I get to Thoddoo from Malé airport?

By shared speedboat from Velana International Airport, about an hour to an hour and a half, with one or two departures a day, usually mid-morning and mid-afternoon. A scheduled seaplane has flown on Thursdays and Saturdays since February 2026. The public ferry runs a few days a week and takes several hours.

Does Thoddoo have a bikini beach?

Yes, two. Sunrise Bikini Beach on the north-east side is smaller and quieter, and Sunset Bikini Beach on the west side is larger and best at sunset. Both have loungers, showers and toilets. Away from them, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

What is Thoddoo known for?

Farming and turtles. Thoddoo is the largest grower of watermelon in the Maldives and also grows papaya, bananas and betel leaf. Its long house reef is known for turtles, and it has two bikini beaches and the remains of an old Buddhist temple from before the islands converted to Islam.

How many guest houses are there on Thoddoo?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists 74 guest houses on Thoddoo, more than on any local island outside Malé City, with about 530 rooms between them, plus one home stay. Most are small family-run houses of four to ten rooms. The full list is on this page.

Can you see manta rays from Thoddoo?

Yes, on a boat trip. Mantas visit cleaning stations in North Ari Atoll, mainly from about November to March, and Madivaru Corner at Rasdhoo is about 20 minutes away by speedboat. Whale sharks need a longer full-day trip to South Ari Atoll, where they are seen all year.

How many days do you need on Thoddoo?

Three nights at least, because of the long transfer. Four or five nights leave time for a farm tour, the house reef, a manta trip, a resort day and sunsets on the west beach, with a spare day in case rough seas cancel a boat trip.

Thoddoo is the Maldives' garden island: farms in the middle, turtles on the reef and two bikini beaches on either side. Land early, give it four nights, borrow a bicycle and eat the fruit. Every guest house on Thoddoo can be priced for your dates through the guest houses and city hotels page.
