Ukulhas seen from the sea, a green island ringed by white sand

Ukulhas is a small, tidy island in Alif Alif Atoll, about 72 kilometres west of Malé and around an hour and a half from Velana International Airport by speedboat. It is known across the Maldives for keeping itself clean, it has a long bikini beach and a house reef close to shore, and the manta and shark sites of North Ari are a short boat ride away.

For a couple's first local island in Ari Atoll, Ukulhas is the easy choice: small enough to walk round, calm in the evenings, and set up for visitors without being crowded by them.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 1,284 people on Ukulhas, up from 921 in 2014. The island's reputation rests on its rubbish. Ukulhas was the first island in the Maldives to manage its waste systematically, with council collections, bins across the island and regular clean-ups and planting drives, and it won the government's Green Leaf Award in 2014. Visitors notice it straight away in the swept sand lanes.

Guest-house tourism began here in 2012, when the first guest house, Ukulhas Inn, was registered. The Ministry of Tourism register now lists 22 guest houses with about 180 rooms, plus four home stays. Most have fewer than ten rooms, and the largest have around twenty.

How to get to Ukulhas from Malé airport

The shared speedboat

Shared speedboats run from the Malé area to Ukulhas, usually around 10:30 and 16:00, and the crossing takes about an hour and a half in open water. Some leave from the airport jetty and some from the Hulhumalé ferry terminal, so check which with your guest house. Flights landing after about 15:00 risk missing the last boat, which means a first night in Hulhumalé.

No airport or seaplane

Ukulhas has no airport and no seaplane platform of its own, and there is no working airport on the neighbouring islands either, so the speedboat is the way in.

The public ferry

The MTCC ferry runs between Malé, Rasdhoo, Ukulhas and Thoddoo a few days a week and takes around four hours. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals. Check the current timetable before relying on it.

Coming home

Boats back usually leave Ukulhas around 07:00 and 13:00. For an early flight home, spend the last night in Hulhumalé.

The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon for the 16:00 boat. Landing later means a night near the airport, and the Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Ukulhas, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats, and the rule is enforced. In the village, women cover shoulders and knees and men wear a shirt. Public displays of affection are not welcome.

Money. Carry US dollars or rufiyaa, as card acceptance outside the guest houses is limited.

Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers.

Things to do on Ukulhas

The bikini beach

The tourist beach runs for close to a kilometre along the south side of the island, with free loungers and clear, shallow water. For the sunset, the island's main evening event, walk round to the west end.

The house reef

The reef starts a short swim offshore, about 20 to 70 metres out, and turtles, eagle rays and blacktip reef sharks are regulars. Before sunset, sharks and rays often gather by the jetty.

Cafés

A handful of small restaurants serve Maldivian, Italian and Thai food, some with tables on the sand by the beach.

Excursions from Ukulhas

Manta rays. Mantas are seen around North Ari through the year, and Ukulhas Thila, close to the island, is known for its cleaning stations from about December to April. Morning snorkelling trips are the usual way to see them.

Diving. Ukulhas Thila, Maaya Thila, famous for night dives, Fish Head, with its grey reef sharks, and Gangehi Kandu are all within reach. At Rasdhoo, about 20 minutes away, Madivaru Corner is known for hammerheads on early-morning dives.

Picnic island and sandbanks. Fushi, a small uninhabited picnic island nearby, and the sandbanks of the atoll make easy half-day trips.

Whale sharks. A long full-day trip south to the South Ari Marine Protected Area. The Dhigurah guide covers the island closest to them.

Dolphins and island hopping. Sunset dolphin cruises, and visits to Rasdhoo, the diving island and atoll capital, and Thoddoo, the farming island further out. Feridhoo, a quieter beach-and-reef island, is on the same speedboat route from Malé, and Mathiveri, with its stingray beach and sandbank picnic island, is a short boat ride to the west.

How long to stay. Four nights covers a manta trip, a day on the house reef, a picnic island and a dolphin cruise. Divers will want longer.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm crossings, clear water and the peak manta season at Ukulhas Thila. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers and rougher seas, but quieter beaches and lower rates.

Who Ukulhas isn't for

Anyone who wants a drink, nightlife or a big choice of restaurants. Ukulhas is small, dry and quiet in the evenings.

Anyone on a two- or three-night trip. The crossing is about an hour and a half each way on a fixed timetable. An island in South Malé Atoll such as Gulhi wastes less of a short holiday in transit.

Couples who want an over-water villa or a private beach. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.
