Himmafushi is a working island in North Malé Atoll, about 16 kilometres north-east of Malé and 15 to 20 minutes from Velana International Airport by speedboat. It is a surf island first: the right-hander known as Jailbreaks breaks a few minutes' walk from the guest houses, and several of the best-known waves in the Maldives are a short boat ride away.

Outside the surf season it is a quiet, practical base close to the airport, with a small bikini beach, boat trips to sandbanks and dolphins, and a village built on fishing and boatbuilding.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 2,015 people on Himmafushi: 1,499 Maldivians and 516 foreign nationals, up from about 1,330 in 2014. It is a working island, with a fish-processing company, a boatbuilding yard and a water-bottling plant, and it grew in 2016, when about 21 hectares of lagoon on its southern side were reclaimed for housing and business.

The surf break is named after the island's prison, and tourism here grew with surfing. The Ministry of Tourism register lists 21 guest houses with about 170 rooms, plus two home stays. Most are small, with four to nine rooms.

How to get to Himmafushi from Malé airport

The shared speedboat

Guest houses arrange a seat on a shared speedboat or a private transfer from Velana International Airport. The crossing takes only 15 to 20 minutes, which makes Himmafushi one of the easiest local islands to reach after a long flight, and a later landing is easier to manage than on islands further out. Check the last boat time with your guest house.

The public ferry

The MTCC ferry from Malé takes about 45 to 50 minutes and has run once a day in each direction except Fridays, leaving Malé in the mid-afternoon and Himmafushi in the morning. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals, so check the current timetable before relying on it.

Coming home

With the airport so close, the journey home is easy. A boat in the morning or early afternoon suits most flights to India, with time left for a last session in the water.

The short version. Fifteen minutes from the airport, Himmafushi is one of the closest surf islands to a long-haul flight. Book the transfer with the stay and send your flight times.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Himmafushi.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is for the bikini beach at the northern tip, for surfing and for excursion boats. Cover up again before walking back into the village, men as well as women.

Fridays and prayer times. Friday is the weekly holy day. The public ferry does not run, and shops and cafés close around midday prayers.

Things to do on Himmafushi

Surfing

Jailbreaks is a right-hand reef break a few minutes' walk from most guest houses, with rides of a couple of hundred metres or more on a good swell. It suits intermediate and experienced surfers. Sultans, a powerful right, and Honky's, a long left, are five to ten minutes away by boat, and Cokes and Chickens near Thulusdhoo are a little further. The season runs from about March to October, with the biggest swells from June to August. Surf schools and board hire are on the island, and gentler waves nearby are used for lessons.

The bikini beach

The tourist beach at the northern tip is short, with coconut palms and sun loungers. Some of the water is stony underfoot, so bring reef shoes.

Watersports and the village

Kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis are available. Himmafushi has no house reef to snorkel from the shore, so reef snorkelling is by boat. In the village, the boatbuilding yard, the souvenir shops selling local crafts and the cafés serving hedhikaa make an easy afternoon.

Excursions from Himmafushi

Diving. A PADI dive centre on the island dives the North Malé sites close by: HP Reef, a protected area also known as Rainbow Reef, Himmafushi Corner, Banana Reef, Lankan Manta Point and the wreck of the Maldives Victory. How these North Malé sites compare with the channel dives of South Malé is set out in North Malé vs South Malé Atoll.

Manta rays. Lankan Manta Point is visited mainly from about May to October.

Sandbanks, dolphins and fishing. Sandbank picnics, sunset dolphin cruises, snorkelling trips and night fishing.

Thulusdhoo and the nearby islands. Thulusdhoo, the other surf island of North Malé, and Huraa, with its mangrove reserve, are a short boat ride away. The Thulusdhoo and Dhiffushi guides cover two more of the North Malé local islands.

How long to stay. Surfers in season stay a week or more. Outside it, two or three nights are enough for a sandbank, a dolphin cruise and a dive, and the short transfer makes Himmafushi a good first or last stop on a longer trip.

When to go

For surfing, from about March to October, with the largest swells in the middle of the southwest monsoon. For calm seas, clear water and sunshine, the dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, is better, though the waves are smaller.

Who Himmafushi isn't for

Anyone looking for a postcard beach holiday. The bikini beach is small, there is building work on the reclaimed land, and the island is a working village rather than a beach retreat.

Anyone who wants to snorkel straight from the shore, or have a drink. There is no house reef, and the island is dry.

Beginners hoping to learn on Jailbreaks itself. It is a reef break for intermediate surfers and up; learners need a surf school and the gentler waves it chooses. For the trade-off between a local island and a resort, see local island or resort island.

Common questions

How far is Himmafushi from Malé airport?

About 16 kilometres, 15 to 20 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport, which makes it one of the closest guest-house islands to the airport. The MTCC public ferry from Malé takes about 45 to 50 minutes and has not run on Fridays.

When is the surf season at Himmafushi?

From about March to October, during the southwest monsoon, with the biggest swells usually from June to August. Jailbreaks, the right-hander off the island, is a few minutes' walk from the guest houses, and Sultans and Honky's are five to ten minutes by boat.

Is Jailbreaks good for beginners?

Not really. Jailbreaks is a reef break that suits intermediate and experienced surfers. Surf schools on Himmafushi teach beginners on gentler waves nearby and can tell you which spot suits the day's swell. Booties or reef shoes help on the shallow reef.

Does Himmafushi have a bikini beach?

Yes, a small one at the northern tip of the island, with palms and sun loungers. Some of the water is stony underfoot. Swimwear is also fine while surfing and on boats. Cover up again before walking back into the village, men as well as women.

How many guest houses are there on Himmafushi?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists 21 guest houses on Himmafushi, with about 170 rooms between them, plus two home stays. Most are small, with four to nine rooms. The full list is on this page, and any of them can be priced on request.

Himmafushi is the surf island next door to the airport: fifteen minutes by boat, a wave at the end of the street, and the best breaks of North Malé within ten minutes. Come between March and October with a board, or stop here for a night or two at either end of a longer trip. Every guest house on Himmafushi can be priced for your dates through the guest houses and city hotels page.
