Fenfushi island guide: South Ari's coral-stone mosque, whale sharks and where to stay
In this article
Fenfushi is a small village island on the southern rim of South Ari Atoll, about 110 kilometres south-west of Malé, known for one of the finest coral-stone mosques in the Maldives. The way in is a shared speedboat of about two hours, or a domestic flight to nearby Maamigili and a short boat ride.
It has about a thousand people, a bikini beach along the lagoon and a handful of guest houses. For travellers who want a quiet South Ari base with some history, close to the whale shark waters of the southern rim, it is worth a look.

Fenfushi at a glance
Population and island life
The 2022 census counted about a thousand people on Fenfushi, up from 729 in 2014 and 560 in 2006. Islanders are known for building in coral stone and for carving coral, and boat building is part of island life. There is a health centre for minor problems, a few shops and local cafés, and a Bank of Maldives ATM that opened in October 2025.
The Ministry of Tourism register lists five guest houses on Fenfushi with 28 rooms between them. Whale Shark Boutique, with 10 rooms, is the largest; the rest have three to six.
How to get to Fenfushi from Malé airport
Shared speedboat
A shared speedboat runs from Malé and the airport on most days except Friday, usually leaving in the middle of the afternoon, and takes about two hours. The boat does not wait for late flights, so land in good time and confirm the departure with the guest house for your dates. A later landing usually means a first night near the airport; the Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.
Domestic flight and speedboat
The faster way in is a domestic flight to Maamigili, South Ari's airport, followed by a short speedboat to Fenfushi. It costs more than the shared boat and suits a later landing; the guest house arranges the boat. The Maamigili guide covers the airport island.
The public ferry
The government ferry runs a few days a week by way of Mahibadhoo and takes most of a day. Check the current timetable before relying on it.
The short version. Land by early afternoon for the shared speedboat, or fly to Maamigili if you land later. Give it four nights or more.
Island rules worth knowing
Alcohol. None is sold or served on Fenfushi, and it may not be brought onto the island.
Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.
The mosque. The Friday Mosque is still in use. Dress modestly and ask locally before visiting the grounds, and avoid prayer times.
Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and the shared speedboat does not usually run.
Things to do on Fenfushi
The coral-stone Friday Mosque
Fenfushi's Friday Mosque, the Hukuru Miskiy, is one of the six coral-stone mosques that the Maldives has put on UNESCO's tentative list for World Heritage. The present building dates from the reign of Sultan Mohamed of Dhevvadhu, between 1692 and 1701, and replaced an earlier mosque on the site. It is built of coral blocks fitted together without mortar, with carving, lacquer work and calligraphy inside, and the grounds hold a coral-stone bathing tank, wells, a sundial and a cemetery of finely carved gravestones. It is small and still used for prayer, so it is a place to see quietly rather than a museum.
The bikini beach and the reef
The bikini beach runs along the lagoon at the edge of the village. Snorkelling from the beach is possible depending on the tide and the season; ask the guest house where the best entry point is and when the current is easiest.
Whale sharks and diving
Fenfushi sits on the southern rim of the atoll, close to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen in every month. Boats must follow the protected area's rules, including registration and propeller guards, and the number of people in the water near a shark is limited. Diving trips to South Ari's thilas and wrecks are arranged through the guest houses with operators in the atoll.
Excursions from Fenfushi
Sandbanks and fishing. Sandbank picnics, sunset fishing and snorkelling trips to the reefs nearby.
Dolphins. Spinner dolphins are often seen in the water around the southern rim of the atoll.
Other islands. Dhigurah, with its long beach, and Maamigili are nearby, and Dhangethi and Omadhoo are further along the rim.
How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, a whale shark day, a sandbank and a visit to the mosque.
When to go
The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas, clear water and the best manta months in South Ari. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers, wind and rougher crossings, but quieter islands and lower rates. Whale sharks are seen all year.
