Mathiveri island guide: North Ari's sandbank island, stingrays and where to stay
In this article
Mathiveri is a small, fast-growing village island in North Ari Atoll, about 85 kilometres west of Malé and around an hour and a half to two hours from Velana International Airport by shared speedboat. Its draw is the water around it: stingrays in the shallows on the western shore, a reef within reach of the beach, and Mathiveri Finolhu, a sandbank picnic island just offshore.
It sits in the north-west of Ari Atoll, a short boat ride from Ukulhas and from several resort islands. For couples and snorkellers who want a quieter North Ari base than Ukulhas, with a sandbank on the doorstep, it is worth a look.

Mathiveri at a glance
Population and island life
The 2022 census counted 878 people on Mathiveri, up from 623 in 2014 and 483 in 2006, an increase of more than 80 per cent in sixteen years. Fishing and tourism are the island's living. Local boats fish mainly for yellowfin tuna, and many residents work at the resorts nearby.

For its size the island is well served, with a health centre, a school, a police station, a magistrate court, a football ground and a Bank of Maldives ATM. The lanes are sand, and everything is a few minutes' walk.
The Ministry of Tourism register lists twelve guest houses with 84 rooms between them, plus one home stay. Water Cloud, with 18 rooms, is the largest; Serenity Reef Maldives and Sis Tourist Villa have 10 each, and most of the others have four to six.
How to get to Mathiveri from Malé airport
Shared speedboat
Guest houses book a seat on a shared speedboat from the airport, which usually leaves around 10:30 and 16:00, with a morning departure around 09:30 on Fridays. The crossing takes about an hour and a half to two hours in open water. Boats back usually leave Mathiveri around 06:30 and 12:30. Times change, so confirm them with the guest house for your dates.
Landing at Velana after about 15:00 risks missing the last boat, which means a first night near the airport. The Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.
The planned airport
Mathiveri has no airport yet. In August 2025 the government signed an agreement with Maldives Airports Company to build one, with land reclamation next to the island, and the President said it would be operating within two and a half years. Until it opens, the speedboat is the way in.
The public ferry
The government ferry from Malé runs a few days a week by way of Rasdhoo and takes around six hours. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals, so check the current timetable before relying on it.
The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon for the 16:00 boat, and plan a morning or midday boat home. Four nights is the sensible minimum.
Island rules worth knowing
Alcohol. None is sold or served on Mathiveri, and it may not be brought onto the island. A resort day pass is the usual way to have a drink.
Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the designated beaches and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, and men should not walk about shirtless.
Money. The ATM is open around the clock, but carry some US dollars or rufiyaa, as several cafés are cash only.
Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, roughly 12:00 to 14:00, and boat times change.
Things to do on Mathiveri
The beaches
The bikini beach is a calm, shallow stretch of white sand looking out to Mathiveri Finolhu, with loungers and shade from the guest houses. A smaller, quieter sunset beach is also set aside for swimwear. Coral fragments wash up on parts of the shore, so reef shoes help.

Stingray beach
On the western side of the island, stingrays, reef fish and sometimes young reef sharks come close to the shore, especially in the mornings. Watch from the sand or stand still in the shallows, shuffle your feet when wading so as not to step on a buried ray, and never touch or feed them.
The house reef
The reef can be snorkelled from the shore, with reef fish, turtles and reef sharks; the water outside the harbour wall is one of the better spots. Go at high tide, when there is more water over the coral, and ask locally where to get in. Currents are usually mild.
Diving
Several dive centres work from the island, offering fun dives, courses and Discover Scuba sessions. North Ari has some of the best-known sites in the country within reach, among them Maaya Thila, famous for night dives with whitetip reef sharks, and Fish Head, with its grey reef sharks. Mantas are seen around North Ari through the year, and a few shallow wrecks suit newer divers and confident snorkellers.
Excursions from Mathiveri
Mathiveri Finolhu. The uninhabited sandbank just off the island, a short boat ride away, and the classic half-day out for a swim and a picnic. At low tide it can sometimes be reached through the shallows; ask locally before trying.
Snorkelling and mantas. Boat trips to the reefs of North Ari, and to manta cleaning stations when the mantas are about.
Fishing. Sunset and night hand-line fishing, often ending with a barbecue of the catch.
Resort days. Nika Island is about ten to fifteen minutes away by speedboat, and day passes there and at other North Ari resorts can be arranged through the guest houses.
Ukulhas, Rasdhoo and Feridhoo. Ukulhas, the tidy island with the long bikini beach, is close by; Rasdhoo is the dawn-hammerhead diving island; and Feridhoo is another quiet beach-and-reef island in the atoll.
Himandhoo. A quiet diving village on the western rim of Ari, with Himandhoo Thila in the channel next door. The Himandhoo island guide covers it.
How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, a day at the picnic island, a snorkelling or diving day and a resort day. Divers usually stay a week.
When to go
The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm crossings, clear water and the best snorkelling from the shore. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers, wind and rougher boat rides, but quieter islands and lower rates.

Who Mathiveri isn't for
Anyone who wants a long bikini beach and a choice of cafés. Ukulhas, nearby, has both.
Anyone short of time. The crossing is up to two hours each way on a fixed timetable, and Gulhi, near the airport, suits a short trip far better.
Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.
