Mahibadhoo is the capital of Alif Dhaal, the South Ari Atoll: a busy town island of about 2,500 people, roughly 76 kilometres south-west of Malé and around two hours from Velana International Airport by shared speedboat. It has the atoll hospital, a good run of local cafés and a manta cleaning station a short boat ride south.

It is a working town rather than a beach island, so the bikini beach is small and the streets are busy with scooters. For travellers who want a practical South Ari base with more services than the smaller islands, and an easy start for manta and whale shark trips, it is worth considering.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 2,580 people on Mahibadhoo, up from 1,939 in 2014 and 1,780 in 2006. As the atoll capital it holds the atoll council, the courts, the police and the utility offices, and it is where the rest of South Ari comes for services: the atoll hospital, a Villa College campus, schools, banks and shops. The roads were paved in stone in 2018, and the island has two harbours, a park and a turf football ground.

The government has picked Mahibadhoo as one of the islands for urban development, with a nearby lagoon set aside for land reclamation and new housing, so expect some building work in the years ahead.

The Ministry of Tourism register lists five guest houses on Mahibadhoo with 36 rooms between them. Oceanvine, with 13 rooms, is the largest; the rest have four to seven.

How to get to Mahibadhoo from Malé airport

Shared speedboat

Shared speedboats run from Malé and the airport, usually with a late-morning and an afternoon departure, and not on Fridays. The crossing takes about two hours in open water. Times change, so confirm them with the guest house for your dates. Landing at Velana after about 15:00 usually means a first night near the airport; the Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.

Domestic flight and speedboat

The alternative is a domestic flight to Maamigili, South Ari's airport, followed by a speedboat across the atoll. It costs more but helps with a later landing; the guest house arranges the boat.

The public ferry

The government ferry from Malé runs a few days a week and takes most of the morning. It suits only travellers with time to spare, so check the current timetable before relying on it.

The short version. Land by early afternoon for the shared speedboat, or fly to Maamigili if you land later. Give it four nights or more.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Mahibadhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. In town, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

Money. There is a bank on the island, but many cafés are cash only, so carry some US dollars or rufiyaa.

Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and the shared speedboat does not usually run.

Things to do on Mahibadhoo

The bikini beach

The bikini beach is a short, fenced stretch with some shade and a few sunbeds. It is fine for a swim, but it is not the long empty beach of the smaller islands, and visitors who want that usually take a sandbank trip or stay on Dhigurah.

Cafés and the town

Mahibadhoo has more places to eat than most local islands, from small local cafés to coffee shops and casual restaurants, and an evening walk along the harbours is part of island life. It is also the place in South Ari to find a pharmacy, a bank or a hospital if you need one.

Mantas and diving

Mahibadhoo Manta Point, a cleaning station on the eastern side of the atoll a short boat ride south of the island, is one of the better-known manta sites in South Ari, best from about December to April. The thilas and channels of the atoll are within reach, and dives and snorkel trips are arranged through the guest houses with operators in the atoll.

Excursions from Mahibadhoo

Whale sharks. The South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen in every month, lies along the southern rim of the atoll, a longer boat trip away. Rules on boat numbers and time in the water apply.

Sandbanks and fishing. Sandbank picnics, sunset fishing and snorkelling trips to the reefs nearby.

Resort days. Day passes to South Ari resorts can sometimes be arranged through the guest houses.

The rest of South Ari. Dhangethi, Dhigurah, Omadhoo and Hangnaameedhoo have their own guides.

How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, a manta or whale shark day, a sandbank and time in town.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm seas, clear water and the manta season at Mahibadhoo Manta Point. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings showers, wind and rougher crossings, but quieter islands and lower rates. Whale sharks are seen all year.

Who Mahibadhoo isn't for

Anyone who wants a long, quiet beach outside the door. Mahibadhoo is a town first; Dhigurah is the South Ari beach island.

Anyone short of time. The crossing is about two hours each way; Gulhi, near the airport, suits a short trip.

Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.
