Goidhoo is the farming island of Baa Atoll: the largest of the three inhabited islands on the small Goidhoo Atoll, about 96 kilometres north-west of Malé and around one and a half to two hours from Velana International Airport by speedboat, with freshwater lakes, mangroves and fields of watermelon and papaya behind the village. It has one of the smallest guest-house registers in the Maldives and sees few visitors.

The bikini beach is a walk through the farms on the south side, the beaches of Fulhadhoo and Fehendhoo are a short boat ride across the lagoon, and the manta gatherings of Hanifaru Bay are within reach in the southwest monsoon. It suits travellers who want a working island more than a beach resort.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 583 people on Goidhoo, up from 507 in 2014. At a little over a square kilometre it is a large island by Maldivian standards, several times the size of its neighbours, and much of the interior is farmland: watermelons, cucumbers, bananas and papayas grow in plots between the palms, and fishing is the other mainstay.

Goidhoo gives its name to Goidhoo Atoll, also called Horsburgh Atoll after the East India Company hydrographer James Horsburgh, a small oval ring of reef separated from the main Baa Atoll by a channel about ten kilometres wide. Its lagoon is unusually deep and has no coral heads in the centre. The other two inhabited islands of the atoll are Fulhadhoo and Fehendhoo, and all three belong to Baa.

The village has two mosques, among them an old coral-stone Friday Mosque, a pharmacy and health centre for minor problems, a handful of shops and four small cafés, including Cafe De Beach by the jetty and the Old Coffee House in an old island house. An island tradition tells of Salaamaa, a woman of African origin freed by a 19th-century sultan and settled on Goidhoo with a house and well of her own; some island families trace their descent to her.

Cash. Bring enough US dollars or rufiyaa in cash from Malé. Cafés and small shops rarely take cards, and an ATM on the island cannot be relied on.

How to get to Goidhoo from Malé airport

The shared speedboat

Shared speedboats run between Malé and Goidhoo on most days except Friday, usually in the morning and in the early afternoon, and the crossing takes about one and a half to two hours in open water, sometimes calling at the neighbouring islands. Seats are limited, so book through your guest house a few days ahead. Landing at Velana after about 15:00 usually means a first night in Hulhumalé.

Domestic flight and speedboat

A domestic flight from Velana to Dharavandhoo, the airport island of Baa Atoll, takes about 35 to 40 minutes, followed by a speedboat across the channel to Goidhoo. It is the faster and costlier way in, and the one to use after a later landing. Your guest house arranges the boat from Dharavandhoo.

The public ferry

Government ferries to Goidhoo are infrequent and slow, taking most of a day, and are not practical for a holiday with an international flight at each end.

The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon for the speedboat, or take the domestic flight to Dharavandhoo if you land later. Give it four nights or more, and plan one day on the neighbouring islands.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Goidhoo, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. In the village, the farms and on the other beaches, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women.

The mosques. Visitors can look at the Old Friday Mosque from outside; dress modestly and ask before going in, and remove shoes at the door.

Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and the speedboats do not usually run.

Things to do on Goidhoo

The lakes, mangroves and farms

Freshwater lakes are rare on Maldivian islands, and Goidhoo has them: a lake in the interior, home to large land crabs, and two shallow mangrove lakes that can be waded at the edges. The paths between them run through the farm plots, and a bicycle or a walk with a guest-house guide is the way to see them. Wear shoes and take insect repellent.

The bikini beach

The bikini beach is on the south side of the island, about 15 minutes' walk from the village through the farms. It is the place to swim: the shallows near the village are full of seaweed, and the rocky stretches of shore are covered in old coral, so reef shoes help.

Snorkelling and diving

The water close to Goidhoo is too shallow for good snorkelling from the shore, so the reefs are visited by boat. Turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks and, on some trips, spinner dolphins are seen around the atoll, and guest houses arrange snorkel trips and dives with operators on the neighbouring islands.

Fishing and the lagoon

Night fishing for snapper and grouper, often with the catch grilled afterwards, is a favourite Goidhoo evening. The breeze across the wide lagoon also suits windsurfing and kitesurfing for those who bring the experience; ask your guest house what is available.

Excursions from Goidhoo

Fulhadhoo and Fehendhoo. The neighbouring islands are a short boat ride away. Fulhadhoo has a long white bikini beach that ranks among the best in the country, and Fehendhoo is a tiny, quiet village with two beaches of its own. A day on Fulhadhoo's beach is the obvious pairing with a stay on Goidhoo.

Hanifaru Bay. In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, plankton collects in this small bay off Dharavandhoo and draws large numbers of mantas, and sometimes whale sharks. Visits are snorkel only, in guided slots with a limit on time in the water, and boats from Goidhoo cross the channel into the main atoll for it.

Sandbanks and resort days. Picnic trips to the sandbanks and uninhabited islands of the atoll, and day passes to resorts in Baa Atoll, can be arranged through the guest houses.

How long to stay. Four nights covers the crossing, a day on the island's lakes and farms, a day on Fulhadhoo's beach and a snorkel trip. In Hanifaru season, add a night for the bay.

When to go

For calm seas, the easiest crossings and the clearest water, the dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, is the time. For mantas at Hanifaru Bay, the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, is the season, with more rain, wind and rougher crossings and quieter islands.

Who Goidhoo isn't for

Anyone who wants the beach above all. Goidhoo's bikini beach is a walk from the village and the shallows near shore are weedy; Fulhadhoo, across the lagoon, is the beach island of the atoll.

Anyone short of time. The crossing is one and a half to two hours each way on a timetable that moves with the weather. Gulhi, close to the airport, suits a short trip better.

Anyone who wants restaurants, nightlife, a drink or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.

Common questions

How do I get to Goidhoo from Malé airport?

By shared speedboat, about one and a half to two hours, usually leaving in the morning and early afternoon on most days except Friday; your guest house books the seat. After a later landing, take the 35 to 40 minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a speedboat across the channel. Public ferries are infrequent and take most of a day.

Does Goidhoo have a bikini beach?

Yes. The bikini beach is on the south side of the island, about 15 minutes' walk from the village through the farms. Swimwear is allowed only there and on boats. The shallows near the village are weedy, so many visitors also spend a day on Fulhadhoo's beach, a short boat ride away.

What is there to see on Goidhoo?

Goidhoo is a farming island with something most Maldivian islands lack: freshwater lakes, including two shallow mangrove lakes, and fields of watermelon, banana and papaya between the palms. The village has an old coral-stone Friday Mosque, and fishing trips, sandbanks and the neighbouring islands fill the other days.

Can you visit Hanifaru Bay from Goidhoo?

Yes. Hanifaru Bay lies off Dharavandhoo in the main Baa Atoll, across the channel from Goidhoo. Mantas gather there in the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, and sometimes whale sharks. Visits are snorkel only, in guided time slots, and the guest houses arrange the boat.

How many guest houses are there on Goidhoo?

The Ministry of Tourism register lists three guest houses on Goidhoo, with 27 rooms between them, plus two home stays. Athiri Residence Goidhoo is the largest with 14 rooms. Other names are marketed online for the island, but this page lists the official register, and any of them can be priced on request.

Goidhoo is the working island of Goidhoo Atoll: lakes and mangroves, farms behind the village, a few hundred people and very few visitors, with Fulhadhoo's beach and Hanifaru's mantas within reach. Land early or fly to Dharavandhoo, give it four nights or more, and every guest house on Goidhoo can be priced for your dates through the guest houses and city hotels page.
