Gaafaru Atoll seen from space, an oval ring of reef with the island of Gaafaru at its south-eastern tip

Gaafaru is a fishing village on its own small atoll, about 62 kilometres north of Malé and around an hour from Velana International Airport by shared speedboat. The oval reef around it has caught many ships, and the wrecks it left, some shallow enough to see while snorkelling, are the island's best-known sight.

It is administratively part of Kaafu, but it sits apart from North Malé Atoll across a deep channel. For snorkellers, divers and anyone who wants a real fishing village close to the airport, it is worth a look.

Population and island life

The 2022 census counted 1,294 people on Gaafaru, up from 1,013 in 2014 and 800 in 2006. It is the only island on Gaafaru Atoll, a large oval reef separated from Kagi, the northernmost island of North Malé Atoll, by the narrow, deep Gaafaru Kandu channel. The island is small, a little over half a kilometre across, and fishing is still its main trade, with boats leaving the harbour at dawn.

There is a health centre and a pharmacy for minor problems, a few shops and cafés, and a children's playground. There is no ATM, so bring US dollars or rufiyaa. A land reclamation project to enlarge the island has been planned.

The Ministry of Tourism register lists ten guest houses on Gaafaru with 66 rooms between them, plus one home stay. Mariana Inn, with 13 rooms, and Pavona Maldives, with 10, are the largest; most of the others have three to eight.

How to get to Gaafaru from Malé airport

Shared speedboat

Shared speedboats from Malé and the airport take about 45 to 75 minutes, depending on the sea. The regular boat usually leaves in the afternoon, around 15:30, every day except Friday, and boats back usually leave Gaafaru around 07:30. Guest houses book the seat. Times change, so confirm them for your dates.

Landing at Velana after about 15:00 risks missing the boat, which means a private speedboat or a first night near the airport. The Hulhumalé guide covers where to stay.

The public ferry

The government ferry from Malé runs a few days a week and takes around two to three hours. Since March 2026 the atoll ferries have left from the Villingili and Hulhumalé terminals, so check the current timetable before relying on it.

The short version. Land at Velana by early afternoon for the afternoon speedboat, and plan an early boat home. Three or four nights covers the reef, a wreck snorkel and a sandbank.

Island rules worth knowing

Alcohol. None is sold or served on Gaafaru, and it may not be brought onto the island.

Dress and the beach. Swimwear is allowed only on the bikini beach and on excursion boats. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, men as well as women. Ask before taking close-up photographs of people.

Fridays. Shops and cafés close around midday prayers, and the shared speedboat does not run.

Things to do on Gaafaru

The shipwrecks

The reef around Gaafaru has proved disastrous to many ships, and several wrecks lie on it. The best known is the Lady Christine, a cable-laying ship that ran aground on the north-west side of the atoll in 1974, now a dive with overhangs and caves. The SS Seagull, a nineteenth-century steamship, has its anchor in shallow water and most of its hull deeper, so parts of it can be seen by snorkellers; the deeper sections are for divers. Trips are arranged through the guest houses with dive operators in the area.

The house reef

The reef starts at the beach and runs a couple of hundred metres out, with coral gardens in shallow water and walls dropping off beyond. Hawksbill turtles are regularly seen, along with nurse sharks, stingrays, eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse and moray eels. Currents are usually gentle, but snorkel with someone and ask locally where to get in. Visibility is often excellent in the dry season.

The bikini beach

The bikini beach, known locally as South Beach, has loungers and thatched umbrellas. It is smaller than most resort beaches, but rarely crowded. Kayaks and paddleboards can be hired.

Excursions from Gaafaru

Wreck snorkelling and diving. The Seagull's shallow sections for snorkellers, and the deeper wrecks and reef walls for divers.

Sandbanks and picnic islands. Sandbanks a few minutes away by boat, and picnic trips to islands across the channel such as Kagi.

Fishing. Pole-and-line and night fishing, often with local fishermen.

Dolphins. Late-afternoon dolphin cruises.

North Malé islands. Dhiffushi and Thulusdhoo, with their surf and longer beaches, are further south in North Malé Atoll.

How long to stay. Three or four nights covers a wreck snorkel, a day on the house reef and a sandbank. Divers will want a week.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings calm crossings and the clearest water for the reef and the wrecks. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more wind, rain and rougher boat rides across the open channel, but quieter islands and lower rates.

Who Gaafaru isn't for

Anyone who wants a long beach and plenty of cafés. Gaafaru's bikini beach is small; Dhiffushi and Maafushi have more of both.

Anyone uneasy on small boats in open water. The crossing to Gaafaru runs across an open channel and can be rough in the southwest monsoon.

Anyone who wants nightlife, a drink with dinner or an over-water villa. The trade-off is set out in local island or resort island.

Comparing islands? The Maldives local islands guide sets every island guide on this site side by side, by transfer time from the airport and what each island does best.
