Lhaviyani Atoll Resorts Compared: Seven Islands, Three Kinds of Reef and Two Ways In
In this article
Updated October 2026
Lhaviyani Atoll is a 30 to 40 minute seaplane flight north of Malé, and its resorts differ far more than that short hop suggests. The choice comes down to three things: whether the reef is a swim or a boat ride, how big and busy the island is, and whether the resort can bring a late arrival in by domestic flight. Kudadoo Maldives Private Island has the reef at the steps; at Atmosphere Kanifushi and Cocoon Maldives, the reef is a boat ride away, and the islands make up for it in other ways.
Lhaviyani Atoll in brief
An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it. Lhaviyani, also called Faadhippolhu, lies north of Malé and has 54 islands. Inside the ring sits the lagoon, the shallow, sheltered water between the islands and the outer reef.
Several of its reefs, sandbanks and wetlands are protected by law, and in 2024 the government announced plans to make Lhaviyani a biosphere reserve. A marine research centre, with laboratories and classrooms for local universities and international institutes, opened at Jawakara Islands Maldives in September 2025.
Getting there: the seaplane, or the flight to Madivaru
Every resort here is reached by seaplane from Velana International Airport in Malé: about 30 minutes to Cocoon Maldives, about 35 minutes to Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa, Fushifaru Maldives, Jawakara Islands Maldives and Atmosphere Kanifushi, and about 40 minutes to Hurawalhi Maldives and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island.
Seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only, so an international flight that lands at Velana in the evening cannot connect to one, and the first night is spent in Malé.
Lhaviyani has a second way in. Madivaru Airport, a domestic airport inside the atoll, opened in February 2022, and its flights run after dark as well as by day. From Madivaru, the resort's own speedboat covers the last stretch. Hurawalhi Maldives and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island use this route for late arrivals. Fushifaru Maldives runs a speedboat of about 15 minutes from Madivaru, and Jawakara Islands Maldives offers the route on request, with a speedboat of about 40 minutes. Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa, Atmosphere Kanifushi and Cocoon Maldives bring guests in by seaplane.
Diving and snorkelling in Lhaviyani
A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. In Lhaviyani they range from a full ring of coral round the island to a sand lagoon with the reef a boat ride away, and that difference matters more than villa size.
Beyond the house reefs, the big animals gather in the channels. A channel, or kandu, is a gap in the atoll's rim where the open ocean flows in and out with the tide, bringing plankton and clear water. Many dives here are drift dives, where the diver lets the current carry them along the reef. A thila is a reef that rises from the atoll floor and stops short of the surface.
Fushifaru Thila, on the north-eastern edge of the atoll, rises in the middle of Fushifaru Kandu, a channel inside the Fushifaru Region Marine Protected Area, declared in 1995. The thila is a manta cleaning station: mantas hover over the reef while small cleaner fish pick parasites from their skin. The channel around it is also a feeding ground, where reef mantas gather to sieve plankton from the current. The Shipyard, in the channel beside the island of Felivaru, is two sunken fishing vessels coated in coral, one with its bow breaking the surface, and a dive for advanced divers. Trips out go on a dhoni, the traditional Maldivian wooden boat, now motorised.
PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, is a dive training organisation whose courses, from a first try dive to full certification, are taught at several dive centres here.
The seasons in Lhaviyani
The Maldives has two seasons, named after the winds. The drier north-east monsoon runs roughly December to April, with calmer seas and the clearest water. The wetter south-west monsoon runs roughly May to November, with more rain, wind and cloudier water. Manta sightings at Fushifaru Thila come and go with the plankton and the tide, so ask the dive centre before planning a trip around them.
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island: fifteen residences and a reef all round
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island is the smallest of the seven, with fifteen residences and nothing else to sleep in. Every one sits over the water with its own pool. Thirteen residences have one bedroom, at about 300 square metres, and two have two bedrooms, at about 380.
Everything shared happens in The Retreat, a two-storey building over the water whose sloping roof is covered in solar panels, with the restaurant, a bar that runs around the clock and a pool. Meals can also be set up in the residence or on the resort's private sandbank, a strip of bare sand in the open lagoon. The spa, Sulha Spa, has a Himalayan salt room.
The reef, rated exceptional, is the reason to come. It circles the whole island, with direct access from every residence, and the coral is mostly brain coral, which came through the bleaching in better shape than most of the atoll. Expect big schools of fusiliers, blacktip reef sharks and turtles.
It suits couples who want privacy and a reef off their own steps. It suits anyone who wants several restaurants, sand at the door or a kids' club much less well: there are no beach villas and no kids' club.
Hurawalhi Maldives: adults-only, with dinner under the lagoon
Hurawalhi Maldives is an adults-only resort of 90 villas on its own island. Over the water, the Ocean Villa, about 105 square metres, has no pool, and there are thirty Ocean Pool Villas. On the sand, only nine villas have a private pool: the Beach Pool Villas, about 132 square metres each.
The draw is 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, named for its depth below the lagoon: one long curved room of glass with ten tables and the reef all round it, serving set lunches and a single dinner sitting. Above the water are Kashibo, Canneli and Coco Bar, and the spa is Duniye Spa.
The house reef is strong. Guests report sharks, turtles and rays on most snorkels, and the guided snorkel with the resident marine biologist is what repeat visitors mention first. Prodivers runs the dive centre. The catch is that you cannot get in wherever you like: the island map marks no-swimming zones and stretches of strong current, so read it on the first day.
It suits couples who want a reef, a marine biologist and an underwater dinner on one island, and nobody travelling with children.
Fushifaru Maldives: the island on the manta channel
Fushifaru Maldives is a small, walkable island on the north-eastern edge of the atoll, beside Fushifaru Kandu, the protected channel. It opened in 2017 and has 63 villas, 44 on the beach and 19 over the water. Sunrise villas look east across the open ocean, sunset villas west over the calm lagoon, and the water villas face the channel.
Dining is a short list. Korakali, the all-day buffet restaurant on the beach, rotates its theme in the evenings, Raakani serves seafood, grilled meats and the catch of the day, and there is a teppanyaki counter. Three bars complete the picture, and there is a kids' club, Kokko Kids Club.
The house reef rates strong, but it is the channel that earns that, not the beach. Off the beach the lagoon is wide, the drop-off is a long swim, and the coral was badly damaged and is being seeded back, though fish, turtles and sharks are plentiful. Fushifaru Thila is a few minutes away by dhoni, and Best Dives Fushifaru runs the dive centre.
It suits divers who want mantas and channel dives close to the jetty, and couples after a quiet island. Anyone who wants a new restaurant every night, or coral off the beach, will find it limiting.
Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa: busy, stylish, with a reef by ladder
Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa stands on Thilamaafushi, an island of about nine hectares, and opened in September 2021. It has more than 130 villas, on the beach and over the water, in a mid-century modern look. The island is sociable rather than secluded, and some villas are a long walk from the restaurants. Villas run from Beach Villas to Sunrise and Sunset Overwater Villas, pool villas, and two- and three-bedroom villas for families.
Turquoise is the all-day restaurant, Tabemasu is Japanese with a teppanyaki counter, and Velaa Bar + Grill cooks over wood. Explore Spa is built over the water. The Family Kids Hub runs every day, and the Marine Conservation Hub, led by a resident marine biologist, runs guided snorkels. Sub Oceanic runs the dive centre.
The house reef is strong, but it is a swim rather than a step. From the beach it is a fair distance out, while the Sunrise Overwater Villas put you onto it by ladder. Guests report blacktips, turtles, eagle rays and plenty of octopus. Stay inside the marked buoys, because beyond them is the seaplane channel.
It suits families and couples who like contemporary design and plenty to do, and suits anyone after a hideaway less well.
Jawakara Islands Maldives: two islands joined by a bridge
Jawakara Islands Maldives is two islands rather than one. Mabin, about 1,400 metres long, is the larger island, with the buffet restaurants Saima and Aila, Molo for Mediterranean food, Hideout by the golf course, and Sulha Spa, which stands over the lagoon. Dheru, about 450 metres long, is the smaller, with The Vela buffet and UMI, an Asian fusion restaurant on the bridge. A 650-metre bridge over the house reef joins them, and between them they hold 290 beach, pool and water villas, with two-bedroom villas on Mabin and three-bedroom villas on Dheru.
On land there is a golf course with a driving range, padel, tennis, pickleball and futsal. Jawa Kids runs the children's programme.
The house reef is strong. Guests report reef sharks, rays and turtles straight off the water villas, and the eastern side of Mabin is the side to ask for. The main reef sits about five minutes offshore, and Prodivers, a PADI 5-Star centre, runs a snorkelling boat out to it for confident swimmers.
It suits families with children of different ages and groups who want sport and choice. It does not suit anyone after a small, quiet island.
Atmosphere Kanifushi: one long beach and no swim-out reef
Atmosphere Kanifushi is a long, narrow strip of sand, about 90 metres wide, with one unbroken beach running its length and 162 villas along it. Most are beach villas, with and without pools, alongside water villas, two-bedroom family villas and the Kanifushi Residence.
The Spice is the buffet restaurant with live cooking, Just Veg is purely vegetarian, and Pier Six serves seafood and teppanyaki over the water. There is a spa and a Kids Club.
The house reef is thin, and it is the compromise. It sits at a steep drop-off with rough water over it, so nobody swims to it, even from the water villas. Snorkelling boats go out twice a day to a rotation of five nearby sites, where turtles and reef sharks are commonly seen.
It suits families and couples who want a long beach, space and a vegetarian restaurant of its own. It does not suit snorkellers who picture stepping off the deck onto coral.
Cocoon Maldives: colour, a sand lagoon and a slide into the sea
Cocoon Maldives stands on the island of Ookolhufinolhu and is the shortest flight of the seven. It is a relaxed, colourful, design-led island of 150 villas, with interiors by the Italian designer LAGO. On the beach there are villas, suites and family villas; over the lagoon, Lagoon Villas and Lagoon Suites, some of them with their own slide into the water.
Octopus is the buffet restaurant, Manta is the overwater restaurant, and Loabi Loabi Bar sits by the pool. The spa is The Cube Spa, and there is a kids' club.
The house reef is thin. It is a seven to ten minute boat ride away, not a swim, and the villa ladders drop onto sand rather than coral. The lagoon is better than it sounds, with nurse sharks, stingrays, eagle rays and turtles under the water villas, and guided snorkelling trips go out by boat daily, weather permitting.
It suits families and couples who want a cheerful island close to Malé. It does not suit keen snorkellers who want to swim straight off the beach.
Which Lhaviyani resort suits you
Pick the reef first, then the island. Snorkellers who want coral from their own steps should choose Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, or a Sunrise Overwater Villa at Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa. Couples who want an adults-only island with a reef to match belong at Hurawalhi Maldives, and divers at Fushifaru Maldives. Families after space and a full programme do better at Jawakara Islands Maldives, Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa or Atmosphere Kanifushi, while Cocoon Maldives keeps the flight shortest. Anyone landing late should look first at the resorts that use Madivaru. Choosing on villa photos alone is the mistake here: the seven islands are far less alike underwater than from the air.
Common questions
How do you get to Lhaviyani Atoll from Malé?
By seaplane from Velana International Airport, about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the resort. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a late landing means a night in Malé. Some resorts also use the domestic flight to Madivaru Airport, inside the atoll, followed by the resort's own speedboat. Check flight times with the resort first.
Which Lhaviyani resort has the best house reef?
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island's reef rates exceptional: it circles the island, with direct access from every residence. Hurawalhi Maldives, Jawakara Islands Maldives, Fushifaru Maldives and Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa have strong reefs with more distance or rules. At Atmosphere Kanifushi and Cocoon Maldives, the snorkelling is by boat.
Can you get to a Lhaviyani resort after dark?
Not by seaplane, which flies in daylight only. Madivaru Airport, the domestic airport in Lhaviyani, opened in 2022, and its flights run after dark. Hurawalhi Maldives, Kudadoo Maldives Private Island and Jawakara Islands Maldives use it for late arrivals, and Fushifaru Maldives offers the route too. Check current flight times with the resort before booking.
Which Lhaviyani resort is best for families?
Jawakara Islands Maldives has two islands, a golf course, sports courts and Jawa Kids, with three-bedroom villas on Dheru. Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa runs a daily Family Kids Hub and marine programmes. Atmosphere Kanifushi offers a long beach and a Kids Club. Hurawalhi Maldives is adults-only.
Where can you see manta rays in Lhaviyani?
At Fushifaru Thila, a manta cleaning station on the north-eastern edge of the atoll, in Fushifaru Kandu. Mantas hover there while small fish clean their skin. Fushifaru Maldives is a few minutes away by dhoni, the traditional wooden boat. Sightings come and go with the plankton, the tide and the season, so ask the dive centre first.
Is there an underwater restaurant in Lhaviyani?
Yes. 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at Hurawalhi Maldives sits 5.8 metres below the lagoon in a curved glass room with ten tables, serving lunch and a single dinner sitting. Guests at Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, the sister island a few minutes away by boat, can cross to it.
