Velaa Private Island Review: What You Actually Get for the Money
Velaa is a 47-villa private island in Noonu Atoll, roughly 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé, and it sits at the very top of the Maldives market on price. Rooms start around USD 3,500–4,000 a night in low season and climb past USD 25,000 for the four-bedroom Private Residence. We send clients here when the trip has to be flawless and the budget has room in it.
This is our honest assessment: where Velaa is genuinely the best in the country, and where you are paying a premium for the name.
Getting there: the 45 minutes that shape your itinerary
Velaa is seaplane-only from Velana International Airport. The flight is about 45 minutes and, like every seaplane in the Maldives, it runs in daylight only.
The practical consequence matters more than the number. Seaplanes generally stop flying around sunset, so if your flight from India lands at Malé after mid-afternoon, you either lose the transfer or overnight in Malé. From India this is easy to solve: morning departures from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru land with hours to spare. Evening departures do not.
Velaa runs its own arrival lounge at Malé, so the wait between your international arrival and the seaplane is spent in a private space rather than the shared seaplane terminal. On a 40°C afternoon with children, that difference is worth more than it sounds.

The villas
Velaa's 47 villas were designed by Czech architect Petr Kolář. The look is Maldivian vernacular shapes handled with a lot of restraint: thatch and timber, but the lines are contemporary and the finishing is exact. Every villa has a pool.

Standard across the villas: Bose sound, Nespresso, a stocked minibar, and a turndown that varies by night rather than repeating the same rose petals for a week. That last detail sounds trivial and is the thing returning guests mention most.
Our steer on beach versus water. On a five-night stay we usually put couples in a beach villa. The overwater photographs better, but you spend more time in shade and the beach category gives you a lounger, a garden and a shorter walk to the restaurants. Split the stay if the budget allows — two nights overwater, three on the beach — and you get both without the fatigue.
Dining: the strongest food programme in the Maldives
This is the honest reason to choose Velaa over its competitors. Very few Maldives resorts have food worth planning a trip around. Velaa does.
Aragu is the signature restaurant, on its own overwater pier. It has run under Michelin-starred chef Adeline Grattard, whose cooking is Sino-French, a genuinely unusual register for the Maldives and one that lands well with Indian palates because the seasoning is confident rather than timid. The tasting menu rotates. Dinner runs long.
Tavaru sits inside the island's tower and does theatrical teppanyaki. Below it is the wine and champagne cellar, reportedly the largest collection in the Maldives, where private dinners are set for small groups. If you are marking an anniversary, book this and nothing else.
Athiri is the all-day beachfront restaurant: buffet breakfast, à la carte through the day, themed evenings. This is where most of your meals actually happen, and it is good enough that you will not resent it.
For Indian guests, Velaa handles Jain, vegetarian and no-onion-no-garlic requests reliably, but the kitchen needs notice. Send dietary requirements at booking, not on arrival.
Golf: an academy, not a championship course
Velaa has the Velaa Golf Academy by Olazábal, built by the two-time Masters champion and managed by Troon. It is a short-game facility: roughly 170 metres of greens, a seven-hole layout with nine tee boxes so you can vary the round, plus a swing studio with lessons and club hire.
Be clear about what this is. It is the best short-game teaching facility in the Indian Ocean and a lovely way to spend a sunset hour. It is not eighteen holes, and Velaa is not the only resort in the Maldives with golf. If you are a serious golfer choosing a resort on the golf alone, say so and we will point you elsewhere. If you want an hour of coaching and a spectacular walk, this is unmatched.
Spa and wellness
The spa is overwater and unusually complete for a 47-villa property: couples' suites, an ice room and steam circuit, and longer wellness programmes for stays of a week or more. Treatments draw on Ayurvedic, Thai and European technique. There is a full gym with a resident trainer.
Book signature treatments and any programme at the time of booking. On an island this small the therapist calendar fills fast, and arriving to find your preferred slot gone is a needless irritation.
The reef and the water
The house reef is healthy and reachable from the beach, which is not a given at this price point. Several famous Maldives resorts have mediocre or dredged-out house reefs and quietly bus you to a snorkelling site instead. At Velaa you can walk in.
Noonu is one of the less-trafficked diving atolls: fewer boats, good visibility, and dive sites that have not been worn down by daily traffic. The marine centre runs certification, dolphin cruises, sunset fishing and private sandbank drops.
Manta and whale shark sightings follow the monsoon, not the calendar you would expect. The green season, roughly May to November, brings the plankton that brings the big animals, and lower rates with it.

- Meal plan. Bed and breakfast is standard at this tier; half board and full board are upgrades. Even on full board, à la carte at Aragu and the Tavaru cellar dinners are usually charged separately, and alcohol is almost never fully included. Assume a five-figure rupee dinner bill on the nights you eat well.
- Seaplane transfer, per adult return, charged on top of the room.
- Green tax per person per night. The rate depends on property size, and at 47 villas Velaa may fall under the smaller-property band.
- TGST on the accommodation bill.
- Service charge, typically 10%.

Who Velaa isn't for
Skip it if the trip is four nights or shorter. A 45-minute seaplane each way plus a daylight-only restriction eats meaningfully into a short stay, and you will not get near the value of the dining programme.
Skip it if you want a large resort's energy — multiple bars, live music, a crowd. Velaa is quiet by design and 47 villas is a small population.
Skip it if the food is not part of the appeal. Take the same budget to a property where you would rather spend on villa size or overwater square footage, because Velaa's premium is substantially a kitchen premium.
Skip it if you are a golfer looking for eighteen holes.
And skip it if the budget is stretched to reach it. The Maldives has excellent five-star properties at a third of this rate, and arriving at Velaa unable to eat where you want is the worst version of this holiday.
Our verdict
Velaa is the most complete luxury product in the Maldives right now. The architecture is disciplined, the service is unforced, the house reef is real, and the food is in a category no other resort in the country occupies.
It is expensive in a way that is hard to justify on paper and easy to understand in person. If the trip matters and the money is there, we have very few reservations about sending clients here.
