Fantastic snorkelling on the house reef just metres from the dive centre jetty. And don't forget to snorkel the lagoon which is home to multiple turtles which you swim with. Plenty of rays and sharks to watch also.

So good that we just had to come back!

At night time after Dinner we developed something of a ritual in walking to the end of the jetty near the dive centre. There is an illuminated deck called Manta Point and if you sit there and wait you may be lucky enough to see a giant Manta pass by.

Sun Siyam Olhuveli is 45 minutes from Velana by speedboat, and the boats run through the night. Land at midnight and you still sleep on the island. Night crossings depend on the weather and the resort's judgement, so send us your flight times before you book.

Three connected islands, eight pools, more than twenty places to eat and drink, and up to two children under fifteen who travel, sleep and eat free. The house reef is entered from the dive centre jetty.

What this actually costs

Every price is the whole villa for two, with the return speedboat and every Maldivian tax already inside. Indian TCS is added separately on the total invoice value.

Two different things sit on the dropdown. The dates to 31 October are an India offer on full board that also brings a dolphin cruise for two adults and two children, a thali lunch for four once every three nights, a fifty dollar spa credit per adult, a floating breakfast in the pool villas, and forty per cent off the menu at eight of the restaurants.

From November the price is standard full board and those extras stop, which is why the step up is larger than the season alone explains.

On the dates to 30 September the 80 sq m Grand Beach Villa costs less than the 64 sq m Water Villa: ₹147,200 against ₹164,700 for three nights. Take the bigger room unless being over the water is the point. In October and from November that reverses.

Book sixty days ahead and the resort takes fifteen per cent off the villa rate, ten per cent at thirty days. It turns on the day you book rather than the day you travel, so it is not on the dropdown, but we apply whichever you qualify for.

Who this isn’t for

Anyone who wants a small, quiet island. This is a large resort spread over three islands with a great deal of choice on it. If you want thirty villas and silence, we sell those too.

Families with toddlers who want to be over the water. The water villas are not recommended for young children because of the layout, so take a beach category.

Anyone travelling over Christmas or New Year. Those dates are not on the dropdown, because both nights carry a compulsory gala dinner and no check-out is allowed on 30 or 31 December. We book them, we just cost them by hand.

Before you book

Tell us which island you want. Main has the arrival jetty, the dive centre and most of the restaurants. Dream is quieter, across the water, with its own restaurant. The Grand Beach Suite with Pool sits on both at the same price, so the choice is yours rather than the rate's.

Two children under fifteen stay, eat and cross free, up to the villa's occupancy. A third child or a third adult carries a supplement, and lunch on your departure day sits outside full board.

There are also two-bedroom residences, a Presidential Water Suite, a Deluxe Water Villa and a Prestige Jacuzzi Water Villa, none of them on the dropdown. The two-bedroom categories carry a heavy discount at the moment, so ask before you settle on a villa.

House reef 4/5 Strong

Worth choosing the resort for. One or two caveats on entry point or current.

The reef here concentrates around the dive centre jetty, and that is where you want to get in. Guests report turtles in the lagoon that they swim with, rays, blacktip sharks, moray eels and octopus, and there is an illuminated deck at the end of the jetty called Manta Point where mantas pass after dark. Coral condition is patchy rather than pristine, and the resort marks off one stretch for protection and another for current, so this is not an island you swim right around. The lagoon is huge, which is why the watersports here are good. Ask us and we will point you at the right entry.

Transfers run around the clock, so a late landing does not cost you a night in Malé.

Speedboats run throughout the day, so there is no daylight cut-off and a late arrival still reaches the island the same night. Night crossings do depend on the weather and are at the resort's discretion, so tell us your flight times and we will confirm before you book. The resort aims to have you on the boat within two hours of meeting you at the airport. Children under fifteen travel free, up to two per villa. A private speedboat for up to four people is available on request.

In South Male Atoll, 45 minutes from Velana International Airport by speedboat. Main Island has the arrival jetty, the dive centre and most of the restaurants and bars. Dream Island is across the water, quieter, with its own buffet restaurant. The Grand Beach Suite with Pool exists on both at the same price, so tell us which you prefer and we will place you.
Is there a house reef you can snorkel? +
Yes, and the place to get in is by the dive centre jetty. Guests report turtles in the lagoon they can swim with, rays, blacktip sharks and moray eels, and there is a lit deck at the end of that jetty called Manta Point where mantas pass after dark. The coral is patchy rather than pristine and parts of the lagoon are marked off for protection or for current.
Is Olhuveli good for families? +
It is one of the strongest family islands we sell, and the short transfer is a large part of why. Two children under fifteen go free on the boat, free on the room and free on the meal plan, there is the Maakanaa Kidz Club, eight pools and a huge shallow lagoon for watersports. The overwater villas are not recommended for young children because of the layout.
Can we book Christmas or New Year? +
Not from the dropdown, which stops on 22 December and picks up again on 11 January. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve carry compulsory gala dinners, regular menus and in-villa dining are withdrawn on those nights, and no check-out is permitted on 30 or 31 December. Ask us and we will price those dates.
