OZEN Reserve Bolifushi Review: Pool Villas, Fine Dining and a Short Boat From Malé

Updated October 2026
OZEN Reserve Bolifushi is a private island in South Malé Atoll, about 35 minutes from the airport by the resort's luxury catamaran, which runs day and night. Every villa has a private pool and a butler. The compromises are an ordinary reef and the sense of being close to the capital.
What stands out
Three things define OZEN Reserve Bolifushi. The first is the pool on every villa, on the beach and over the water, with a butler for each and a bar restocked daily.
The second is the food and wine. Five restaurants, a teppanyaki room and the CUVÉE wine library give the island more range than its size suggests, and the resort received a MICHELIN Key in 2025, the Michelin Guide's hotel distinction.
The third is the short transfer. Being close to Malé, the island is one of the easier luxury choices for a short trip.
It is the more polished of the two OZEN islands in South Malé Atoll. Its sister, OZEN Life Maadhoo, is the more active one.
What the island is like
An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it. South Malé Atoll lies just south of the capital, which is why the journey is short.
Bolifushi is a narrow island shaped like a figure of eight, about 750 metres long, with a long wooden jetty carrying the water villas out over the lagoon, the shallow water inside the reef. It opened as OZEN Reserve Bolifushi in December 2020, on the island that was previously Jumeirah Vittaveli.
Being close to Malé has a cost: recent guests mention a new resort under construction nearby, in view of some water villas.
Arriving
The transfer is by the resort's luxury catamaran from Velana International Airport in Malé, taking about 35 minutes. Guests wait in the OZEN Collection lounge at the airport, an air-conditioned room with drinks and Wi-Fi, before boarding.
Boats are not bound by the seaplane daylight rule, which leaves late-afternoon arrivals at seaplane resorts waiting overnight in Malé. Departures are scheduled rather than private, so allow for a wait at Velana, but the boats run around the clock. Check the arrangements for your landing time on the OZEN Reserve Bolifushi page before you book flights.
The villas
Every villa has its own pool. On the beach, the Earth Pool Villa comes in sunrise and sunset versions, 418 square metres each, with a large pool and its own stretch of sand. Their pools, at 59 square metres, are among the largest on the island. Over the water, the Ocean Pool Suite is 239 square metres, and the Ocean Pool Suite with Slide adds a slide from the deck straight into the lagoon.
For families there is the Earth Pool Pavilion with two bedrooms, and above it the RESERVE villas: a two-bedroom Ocean Pool RESERVE with Slide over the water, and two-bedroom and three-bedroom Earth Pool RESERVE villas on the beach. At the top sits the Royal RESERVE, a private estate of about 2,700 square metres.
Eating and drinking
Vista del Mar is the main restaurant, open all day with world cuisine and a Spanish influence. Sangu Beach serves modern Levantine and Moroccan food at dinner, with tables set directly on the sand. Saffron is the Indian restaurant, with thalis and set courses at dinner, a useful anchor of familiar flavours for Indian families on a longer stay. Soyi cooks pan-Asian food, from Chinese and Thai to Japanese. ORIGINƎ is the fine-dining room, with modern European cooking and seafood facing the ocean.
Teppanyaki is served in a boat-shaped dining room over the water, with the chef cooking at a hot plate in front of the table. The CUVÉE wine library holds hundreds of labels for tastings and dinners. Both carry a separate charge and need booking.
For drinks, OZAR is the main bar by the pool, serving afternoon tea from four to six and music in the evenings, and SANGU Bar is the beach bar. Most speciality restaurants need booking ahead, so it pays to plan the week's dinners on the day you arrive.
The spa, the children and sport
ELE|NA, the spa, short for Elements of Nature, has treatment rooms over the water and in the garden, using VOYA and Philosophia Botanica products, with yoga, meditation and sound-healing sessions.
The Kuda Koli kids' club is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, and there is a teen lounge as well. Babysitting is charged.
The OZENERGY gym is over the water, and the spa's wellness programme adds tai chi. Snorkel gear, windsurfing, sailing catamarans, canoes and paddleboards are free to use, while motorised sports such as seabobs and banana boats cost extra.
The water
A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. At OZEN Reserve Bolifushi the easy entry is in front of the spa, and a few hundred metres to the left is the best of it: blacktip reef sharks, turtles, morays, big clams and a lot of colourful fish. The coral is ordinary rather than remarkable, which is normal for South Malé Atoll, and the stretch worth snorkelling is not long. Current can stop snorkelling from the water villas on some days.
Every evening, around five, stingrays gather at the arrival jetty for a feeding session that children in particular enjoy.
The dive centre, Best Dive Bolifushi, is PADI Five Star, and outside dive and excursion operators are not allowed on the island. South Malé Atoll's dive sites, such as Kandooma Thila, are within reach by boat. A thila is an underwater reef pinnacle that rises close to the surface.
Where the compromises are
The reef is the first. It is pleasant for a few days and thin for a week; keen snorkellers will want the boat trips.
The second is the setting. Close to Malé means a short transfer, but also a new resort being built nearby.
The third is wear. The island's villas date from its earlier life as Jumeirah Vittaveli and were renovated for the 2020 opening, and several recent guests describe some water villas as starting to look dated.
Snorkellers who want regular boat trips out to other reefs should look at the sister island, OZEN Life Maadhoo, which runs snorkelling trips twice a day.
Who will love it, and who won't
OZEN Reserve Bolifushi suits couples and families who want a private pool, good food and wine, and a short transfer that runs day and night. It is a strong choice for four or five nights. It suits keen snorkellers, and anyone wanting a remote island far from the capital, considerably less well.
Common questions
How far is OZEN Reserve Bolifushi from Malé airport?
About 35 minutes by the resort's luxury catamaran, after a wait in the OZEN Collection lounge. The boats run day and night. Departures are scheduled, so allow for a short wait, and confirm the transfer for your landing time when you book.
Does every villa at OZEN Reserve Bolifushi have a pool?
Yes. Every beach villa and water villa has its own pool, and every villa has a butler. The Ocean Pool Suite with Slide adds a slide from the deck into the lagoon.
Is the house reef good at OZEN Reserve Bolifushi?
It is pleasant rather than remarkable. Entry is easy in front of the spa, and the best stretch, a few hundred metres to the left, has blacktip sharks, turtles and morays. The coral is ordinary, and current can stop snorkelling from the water villas.
Is OZEN Reserve Bolifushi good for families?
Yes. The Kuda Koli kids' club is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, there is a teen lounge, and two and three-bedroom villas suit larger families. The short transfer also suits young children better than a long seaplane flight.
What is the difference between OZEN Reserve Bolifushi and OZEN Life Maadhoo?
Both are in South Malé Atoll. OZEN Reserve Bolifushi is the more polished island, with a pool on every villa and a house reef. OZEN Life Maadhoo is the more active one, with snorkel boats, an underwater restaurant and no reef off the beach.
