Updated October 2026

OZEN Life Maadhoo is a long, narrow island in South Malé Atoll, about 45 minutes from the airport by speedboat, with an underwater restaurant six metres below the surface and snorkelling boats out to the reefs twice a day. The compromise is plain: there is no reef off the beach or the villas, so the snorkelling starts with a boat ride.

What stands out

Three things define OZEN Life Maadhoo. The first is M6m, short for minus six metres, a restaurant on the seabed where fish swim past the windows during a long tasting menu.

The second is the pace. This is the more active of the two OZEN islands in South Malé Atoll, built around boat trips, diving, sunset cruises and fishing rather than days spent beside a private pool. Guests regularly single out the butlers, and the sunset trips get good reports too.

The third is the transfer. The speedboat runs day and night, so there is no seaplane cut-off to plan around.

Its sister, OZEN Reserve Bolifushi, is the more polished island, with a pool on every villa and a reef off the beach.

What the island is like

An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it. South Malé Atoll lies just south of the capital, which keeps the journey short.

Maadhoo is a long, narrow strip of an island, under a kilometre from end to end, with sunrise views on one side and sunset on the other. It opened as an OZEN resort in July 2016, the first of the group's OZEN islands. A hydroponic garden at the southern tip grows herbs and salads for the kitchens. The lagoon, the shallow water inside the reef, is shallow on the sunrise side, and seagrass was deliberately left in place around the beach villas, which is why the marine life there is better than most guests expect.

Arriving

The transfer is a speedboat from Velana International Airport in Malé, about 45 minutes across the atoll, with guests welcomed first at the OZEN Collection lounge at the airport.

Speedboats are not bound by the seaplane daylight rule, which leaves late-afternoon arrivals at seaplane resorts waiting overnight in Malé. Boats are scheduled rather than private, so allow for a wait at Velana, but they run around the clock. Check the arrangements for your landing time on the OZEN Life Maadhoo page before you book flights.

The villas

On the beach, the Earth Villa is the starting point, and the Earth Villa with Pool adds a private pool of about 25 square metres. Over the water, the Wind Villa is 85 square metres with no pool, the Wind Villa with Jacuzzi and Slide adds a hot tub and a slide into the lagoon, and the Wind Villa with Pool, at 112 square metres, has a private pool of 27 square metres.

For families, the Earth Pool Pavilion has two bedrooms and a pool across 320 square metres, and at the top THE OZEN RESIDENCE is a three-bedroom villa over the water for up to eight guests. The standard beach and water villas take three adults, or two adults and a child, so families of four need a pavilion or two villas.

The real choice is whether a private pool matters. Many of the villas here do not have one, which suits guests who spend the day on boats and the beach, and disappoints those who want to stay home.

Eating and drinking

Eight places to eat and drink cover a lot of ground. The Palms is the main restaurant, open all day with world cuisine. Tradition IndoCeylon cooks Indian and Sri Lankan food at dinner and several recent guests single it out. Tradition Peking cooks Chinese food, also at dinner, and both suit families who want familiar flavours after a day on the boats. LONU, for lunch, serves modern Maldivian food and is for adults only.

M6m sits six metres below the surface, serving a long tasting menu at lunch and dinner to a small number of guests at a time, with meat, seafood and vegetarian versions. Dinner there is for guests aged 12 and over, so families go at lunch. Recent guests find the room intimate, and some find it cramped.

Hudhu Bay is the beach club on the sunset side, with a DJ at sundown, Mediterranean snacks, ice cream and a mud-crab dinner, by reservation only, that is charged extra. JOIE de VIVRE is the main bar by the pool, with a poolside kitchen, and Gin Is In is the adults-only gin bar.

The spa, the children and sport

ELE|NA, the spa, short for Elements of Nature, sits over the water and uses VOYA seaweed-based and Philosophia Botanica products, with yoga, meditation and sound-healing sessions alongside the treatments. The OZENERGY gym has a sauna and a saltwater pool.

The kids' club is open from 09:00 to 18:00, with organised activities and games every day. There are paddle tennis and pickleball courts, and kayaks and paddleboards are free to use.

The water

A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. OZEN Life Maadhoo has none off the beach or the villas. Instead, snorkelling boats go out to nearby reefs every morning and afternoon. Those reefs are decent without being remarkable, with reef fish and reef sharks, and the odd turtle.

The lagoon itself has plenty of fish, and the water under the boardwalk and around the Earth Villas is better than most guests expect, thanks to the seagrass.

The diving is the stronger draw. The PADI Five Star dive centre, run by Dolphin Base, takes divers to sites around South Malé Atoll.

Where the compromises are

The reef is the first. Anyone who wants to snorkel from their steps should choose the sister island, OZEN Reserve Bolifushi.

The second is the busy feel. With close to a hundred villas, recent guests mention waits for buggies and for service when the island is full.

The third is the beach. Several recent guests mention seaweed on parts of the shore.

The fourth is the private pool. Many villas, including the entry beach and water villas, have none, so anyone set on a pool of their own should budget for a higher category.

The last is M6m itself. Seats are few and the room is small, so book it on the first day rather than hoping for a table later in the stay.

Who will love it, and who won't

OZEN Life Maadhoo suits couples and families who want a busy, sociable island with plenty to do, an underwater dinner, good diving and a short speedboat transfer that runs day and night. It suits snorkellers who want to swim straight from their villa, and anyone after a quiet, private island, considerably less well.

Common questions

How do you get to OZEN Life Maadhoo?

By speedboat from Velana International Airport, about 45 minutes, with guests welcomed first at the OZEN Collection lounge. The boats run day and night, so there is no daylight cut-off as there is with seaplanes. Departures are scheduled, so allow for a short wait, and confirm the transfer for your landing time when you book.

Does OZEN Life Maadhoo have a house reef?

No. There is no reef off the beach or the villas. Snorkelling boats go out to nearby reefs every morning and afternoon, and the seagrass around the beach villas holds more fish than most guests expect. Keen snorkellers may prefer OZEN Reserve Bolifushi.

What is M6m at OZEN Life Maadhoo?

An underwater restaurant six metres below the surface, serving a long tasting menu at lunch and dinner to a small number of guests. Dinner is for guests aged 12 and over, so families with younger children go at lunch.

Is OZEN Life Maadhoo good for families?

Yes. The kids' club runs organised activities and games from 09:00 to 18:00, and the Earth Pool Pavilion and THE OZEN RESIDENCE suit larger families. Younger children can join the M6m experience at lunch.

What is the difference between OZEN Life Maadhoo and OZEN Reserve Bolifushi?

Both are in South Malé Atoll. OZEN Life Maadhoo is the more active island, with snorkel boats, diving, an underwater restaurant and no reef off the beach. OZEN Reserve Bolifushi is the more polished one, with a pool on every villa and a reef you can swim to.
