The largest lagoon in the country, with villas built over sand on purpose and slides that drop you into it. The trade is that there is no coral at your steps, so anyone whose trip is about snorkelling should read the water section before anything else.

Getting there
Ask about the Maafaru route before you book flights. It is materially cheaper, it flies on wheels rather than floats, and it does not stop at sunset. On a week for two the difference runs to about ₹144,000.
Seaplane seats are confirmed only the day before you fly. Soneva keeps its own lounge at the terminal, shared with its sister islands, and the wait usually runs one to two hours.
Seaplane baggage is 25 kg per person including hand luggage. On the Maafaru route it is 20 kg checked and 5 kg hand.

Every villa here has its own pool, and almost every one has a slide into the lagoon. Several have a roof over the master bedroom that rolls back for the stars.
Names on this list move more than at most resorts. Soneva reorganised its villa collection during 2026, so a category on our booking page may read slightly differently on Soneva’s own site. We confirm the exact villa in writing before anything is paid.
Every category is built for a maximum of two children alongside the adults.

Where you eat
Dining is spread across the island rather than concentrated in one room. Director’s Cut is Japanese, over the water, with a silent cinema attached. Crab Shack is Sri Lankan seafood by the lagoon, Saji is Indonesian, Primitive is Maldivian cooked over open fire on the sand, and Chill mixes Maldivian and Peruvian.
There is a Wine Cellar, a Cheese Room and a Chocolate Room. Tipsy makes cocktails to order and delivers them by tuk tuk to wherever you have settled for the evening.
Cinema Paradiso shows films over the lagoon, which is the thing most guests remember.
How the plan works
Everyone in the villa takes the same meal plan.
In-villa dining sits outside half and full board. Order in and you get a credit towards the bill rather than a free meal. On an island this spread out, people order in more than they expect to.
Soneva Unlimited is the all-in upgrade: every drink, unlimited spa, and unlimited experiences including diving. Over a week for two it is a large number, and it only pays if you drink and use the spa heavily. Ask us to run it against what you actually plan to do.
The water
Why we rate it 2 out of 5
This is the honest part of the page. The villas sit over sand by design, not over reef. The lagoon is the largest in the Maldives and it is extraordinary to look at, warm, safe and shallow to swim in. There is no coral at your ladder.
Rays, turtles and baby sharks do drift through the lagoon, and the guided lagoon snorkel is worth doing for that alone.
Guests who booked this island to snorkel tell us so bluntly afterwards. We would rather you knew before you paid.
Where the coral actually is
The house reef is a short boat ride, complimentary and daily, and the coral out there is healthy.
Soneva also runs guided snorkelling further out, in Noonu Atoll and off Kuredu, and diving from the Soleni centre on the island.
If the reef is the whole point of the trip, ask us about Soneva Fushi instead. It is the sister island and it has what this one does not.

What the price is built on
The villa at its base occupancy, the return transfer for everyone in it, your meal plan, and every Maldivian tax. Four nights minimum on every rate. Indian TCS is the one thing outside the figure.
Children under twelve stay and dine free, two of them in a one or two bedroom villa and four in a three bedroom, all year and on top of every other offer. You pay their green tax and their seats on the plane.
Ways to pay less
Finish the trip by 30 September. The summer rate takes 20% off the villa and moves you to half board at no charge, and 1 October is the biggest seasonal step we sell anywhere.
Take the Maafaru route rather than the seaplane.
Book 60 days ahead for October to December for 10% off, or stay fifteen nights or more for 30%. Neither is on the dropdown, because both turn on the day you book rather than the day you travel. Ask.
Priced by hand
21 December to 11 January. Seven nights minimum, no check-out on 31 December or 1 January, and compulsory gala dinners on both evenings.

Cancellation
Free to 30 days before arrival, with payment due at that point. Inside 30 days it is the full stay, and that includes no-shows and leaving early.
Things we would rather you heard from us
- There is no reef at your steps. It is the most common disappointment on this island and it is entirely avoidable. The lagoon is sand by design. The coral is a short, free boat ride away and it is healthy, but it is not something you swim to from the ladder.
- The seaplane stops at sunset. Land at Velana after 15:30 and it will not take you the same day. Maafaru flies later, on wheels, and cheaper, but it is a different journey with a boat at the end of it. Send us your flight times before you buy them.
- In-villa dining is not free on half board. You get a credit towards the bill, not the meal. Given how far apart things are on this island, that catches more people here than almost anywhere.
- Soneva Unlimited is a decision, not an upgrade. It covers every drink, the spa and the experiences, and over a week for two it is a large number. It pays for heavy drinkers and heavy spa users. For everyone else it does not, and we will tell you plainly which one you are.
