Location and transfers
Ask about Maafaru before you buy flights. Maafaru International is the reason a late landing does not have to take your first night: the airport runs around the clock, the flight is on wheels rather than floats, and the speedboat at the end of it is complimentary. The last scheduled flight down still governs, so send us your arrival time and we will check it against the timetable.
Seaplane luggage is 25 kg per person and that is everything, hand luggage included. It is not twenty-five plus a cabin bag. Pack to the whole number.
Transfers need seventy-two hours’ notice, and seats are confirmed the day before you fly. Infants under two travel free and are not given a seat of their own.
The speedboat straight from Malé is three and a half to four hours, and Soneva advises against it. Soneva Fushi and Soneva Secret are each about twenty minutes away by seaplane if you are combining islands.

Every villa has its own pool, and every one but the Beach Hideaway has a slide into the lagoon. Several carry a roof over the master bed that rolls back for the stars. Pools are fresh water except the 2 Bedroom Water Retreat and the 4 Bedroom Island Reserve, which are salt.
Look at the how-many column before you fall in love with a category. Twenty of the villas are 1 Bedroom Water Reserves. Every other category on this island runs between one and four villas, and three of them are a single villa. On most of Soneva Jani it is availability that decides, not budget.
Soneva reorganised its villa collection during 2026 and some category names changed. A name on our booking page can read slightly differently on Soneva’s own site. Tell us which villa you want and we will confirm the exact one before anything is paid.
Every villa comes with bicycles or tricycles, a walk-in minibar, a study, three separate places to eat, and a twenty-four-hour butler. The butler looks after more than one villa.

Drinks are charged on every plan except Soneva Unlimited. Not a limited list, not house pours: nothing to drink is included at all below the top plan. On an island priced like this one, that is the line that moves the total.
In-villa dining sits outside every plan but the top one. Given how far apart things are here, people order in more than they expect to, and the villas are built for it with three separate places to eat.
Soneva Unlimited is a decision rather than an upgrade. It pays for people who drink well and use the spa often, and it does not for everyone else. Tell us how you actually plan to spend the days and we will run the sum both ways and give you a straight answer.
Everyone in the villa takes the same plan. You cannot put one adult on breakfast and the other on Unlimited.

Soneva rewrote its restaurant list during 2026, so anything you read about this island more than a year old names venues that are no longer here. The list above is the current one.
Hours and closure days move with the season. Ask us which venues are open and which need booking on your dates, and we will have tables held before you land.
There is a Wine Cellar on the island as well. Cinema Paradiso is the thing most guests remember, and it is the one to build an evening around.
The water
Why we rate the reef 2 out of 5
The villas sit over sand by design, not over reef. The lagoon is the largest in the Maldives and it is extraordinary to look at, warm, safe and shallow to swim in. There is no coral at your ladder and there never will be, because that is how the island was built.
Rays, turtles and baby sharks do drift through the lagoon, and the guided lagoon snorkel is worth doing for that alone.
The coral is a short boat ride away, the boat is complimentary and it runs daily, and what is out there is healthy. That is a real answer, but it is not the same as swimming out from your steps.
If the reef is the whole point of the trip, ask us about Soneva Fushi instead. It is the sister island and it has what this one does not, and we would rather move you than sell you the wrong island.
What runs in the water
Manta season is roughly June to November, and Soneva is clear that the wetter months are the better ones for it, because the plankton brings the mantas in. That makes the green season a genuine argument here rather than a compromise.
Diving is the Soleni Dive Centre on the island, which is listed in PADI’s own dive-centre directory.
There is a Turtle Beach on the island and a Turtle on Call programme that fetches you when something is worth seeing.
Guided snorkelling runs in the lagoon, elsewhere in Noonu Atoll and off Kuredu. On Soneva Unlimited the diving and the excursions are inside the plan, which is the one case where the top plan changes the shape of the holiday rather than just the bar bill.

Children and safety
- The Den takes four to seventeen, across more than 1500 m². It is the largest children’s club in the Maldives and it is not a room with crayons: a zipline, a pirate ship, a cinema, a Lego room, a music room, a kids’ kitchen and a swim-up mocktail bar, with childminders present throughout. One club covers the whole age range rather than splitting off a teen room.
- Under fours get one-to-one babysitting instead. It is arranged rather than dropped into, and it sits outside every meal plan including Soneva Unlimited. Tell us early and we will have it booked before you travel.
- The slides are the signature, and the rules are not something to assume. Almost every villa here has one. Tell us the ages of anyone travelling and we will have the slide rules and the overwater villa position confirmed for you before you book, rather than have you find out at the top of the ladder.
- The far water villas are a long way from The Den. This is a 150-acre island and the lagoon villas run a good way out on their jetties. With small children, ask us to put you nearer the middle, and expect to be on a bicycle either way.
- Cots and high chairs go on the pre-arrival form. Soneva sends one before you travel and it is worth filling in properly. It is also where dietary requirements land, which matters on an island where dining is spread across ten places.

Things we would rather you heard from us
- There is no reef at your steps. It is the most common disappointment on this island and it is entirely avoidable. The lagoon is sand by design. The coral is a short free boat ride away and it is healthy, but it is not something you swim to from the ladder. Anyone booking Soneva Jani to snorkel should be looking at Soneva Fushi, and we will say so.
- The distances are real, and so are the waits. 150 acres, villas far out on jetties, and guests do report waiting for a buggy at busy times. Bicycles are the normal answer and every villa has them. It is a lovely island to cycle around and a tiring one to cross when you are late for dinner with a tired four-year-old.
- Nothing to drink is included below the top plan. Not with dinner, not house wine, nothing. Soneva Unlimited is the only plan that covers drinks, and it also covers the spa, the excursions and in-villa dining. Below it, the headline price is not the trip price, and we would rather set that out now than have you discover it on day three.
- The barefoot butler is shared. It is marketed as personal and it is genuinely good, but one butler covers more than one villa. At this level some guests expect exclusively theirs, and that is not what it is.
- The villa names moved in 2026. Soneva reorganised its collection and some categories were renamed or withdrawn. If you have been reading about this island for a while, the villa you have in mind may now be called something else. Tell us what you want and we will name the exact villa in your confirmation.
