Velana Beach Hotel Maafushi stands on an island where Maldivians live and work, so the island's rules apply to everyone staying there.
No alcohol. It is not sold or served anywhere on an inhabited island. Swimwear on the tourist beach. In the village, cover shoulders and knees. Friday is the day off. Shops close for prayers and fewer boats run, so check your transfer times if you arrive or leave on a Friday.

About the hotel
Velana Beach Hotel is a hotel on Maafushi, the best known of the guest-house islands south of the airport, with four room types. It suits couples who want the beach, the sandbank trips and the price of a guest house rather than a resort. Every price on this page already includes your room, breakfast or dinner as chosen, the return shared speedboat and every tax, green tax included.
What this actually costs
The four rooms are close in price. The Standard Room has a window that does not open, and it is the one to pick only if you plan to be out all day. The Island View Room with a balcony costs about a tenth more and is the better buy for most couples. The Sea View Room is roughly a quarter more than the Standard Room.
Half board adds dinner every night and puts about forty percent on a three-night stay in the cheapest room. On Maafushi there are plenty of cafés within a few minutes’ walk, so breakfast only is a sensible default.
October is the cheapest window on the dropdown. From November the same room costs about a sixth more, and the Christmas and New Year fortnight costs close to half as much again as October.
Excursions are not in these prices. Snorkelling trips, sandbank picnics and dolphin cruises are extra.
Who this isn’t for
Anyone who wants a drink at sunset. Maafushi is an inhabited island, so no alcohol is served anywhere on it. It is also the wrong choice if you want silence: Maafushi is a busy village with boats, scooters and a lot of guest houses.
If quiet matters more than price, look at Gulhi, a short ride away.
Before you book
Over Christmas and New Year, from 22 December to 5 January, the minimum stay is three nights. Cancellation terms are stricter from 20 December to the end of February; we send them with the quote.
The speedboat runs to a timetable, not to your flight. Tell us when you land and we will match you to a boat, or arrange a night in Malé if you land late.
