Worth choosing the resort for. One or two caveats on entry point or current.
One side reef, one side lagoon. On the reef side the coral starts about twenty metres out, with real structure, table corals and overhangs, and guests report sharks, rays, turtles and schooling snapper. The opposite side is a shallow calm lagoon, lovely for small children and with nothing to snorkel. Bleaching hit this reef and reports since have gone both ways, some describing it as white and others as well preserved, so treat coral condition as uncertain. The sunset side has eroded and carries large containment bags. Snorkelling trips can be cancelled when too few people book.
Getting there
Land at Velana after 15:30 and the last seaplane of the day will have gone, which means a night in Malé before you reach the island.
