North Malé Atoll · 45 villas, every one over water · The boat runs at any hour
Forty-five villas on one island and not one of them on the beach. The speedboat runs around the clock, so a midnight landing still puts you in your villa that night. The reef at your own ladder is the thing to settle before you book. Everything operational, in one page.

Location and transfers
The round-the-clock boat is the practical argument for this island. On a seaplane island a 19:00 landing at Velana means a night in the capital at your own expense and a first morning spent in transit. Here it means dinner. The same is true in reverse on the way home.
Malé is twenty kilometres away and you can see it. The city skyline, the airport and passing shipping are all in view, and aircraft are audible through the day. Guests report the jetty nearest the airport as the noisiest and the sunset side as the calmest. Tell us if quiet matters and we will put the request on the booking and ask for a villa position to match.
The return speedboat is already inside the package price on our rates. Nothing to arrange at the pier and nothing to settle at check-out for the crossing.
The resort runs a private arrival service through the airport for anyone who wants to skip the queues. Ask us and we will price it with your quote.
The villas
| Villa | Size | Pool |
|---|---|---|

| Gili Lagoon VillaThe same footprint, turned to the lagoon. | 210 m² | No |
| ResidenceAt the secluded end of Jetty 1. The resort describes it as large enough for a family of four. | 250 m² | No |
| Gili Lagoon ResidenceAt the end of the western-facing jetty, so sunset side. | 250 m² | No |
| Island View Crusoe ResidenceStands alone off the island, reached by boat. The living room converts to a second bedroom. | 250 m² | No |
| Sunset Crusoe ResidenceThe same, facing west. Also a short boat ride from shore. | 250 m² | No |
| Villa Suite with PoolThe cheapest way onto this island with your own pool. The pool is 19 m². | 264 m² | Infinity |
| Gili Lagoon RetreatTwo bedrooms at the end of the western jetty, with a private gym, a steam room and a walkway to its own small island. | 369 m² | None listed |
| Residence with PoolAn oversized infinity pool of 24 m². | 374 m² | Infinity |
| Two-Bedroom Villa with PoolOn the eastern, sunrise side. The pool is 32 m² and L-shaped. | 385 m² | Infinity |
| The Private ReserveA single villa in the middle of its own lagoon, reached by boat, with a pool on the upper sun deck. We quote it by hand. | 1,700 m² | Infinity |
Every category on this island stands over the water. There is no beach villa at any price, and the two Crusoe Residences and the Private Reserve are detached structures off the island reached by boat rather than beach houses. For some people that is the whole reason to come here. For anyone who pictured walking from a bedroom onto sand, it rules the island out, and better now than at check-in.
The counts are lopsided, so availability decides more than budget does. Eighteen of the forty-five are Villa Suites. The Gili Lagoon Villa runs to five, the Sunset Crusoe Residence to three, the Residence to two, and the Gili Lagoon Retreat and the Private Reserve are one villa each. On the smaller categories the question is not what you would like but what is free on your dates.
The Gili Lagoon Retreat is new as of September 2026 and was the Two-Bedroom Sunset Villa before that. Same villa, enhanced, renamed, and now sold as its own category with the private walkway to Three Palm Island. Anything you read about this island written earlier will use the old name. It is not on our booking dropdown yet, so ask us and we will quote it.
Eight of the eleven categories have no pool. Pools open at the Villa Suite with Pool and carry a floating breakfast with them, which the categories without a pool do not receive. Every villa gets direct steps into the lagoon and a twenty-four-hour Mr or Ms Friday, which is what the resort calls its butlers.
Meal plans
| Plan | What it covers | Still charged |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Breakfast at Kashiveli, 07:30 to 10:30, or a credit of the same value taken in the villa. | Lunch, dinner and every drink. |
| Half board | Breakfast, plus dinner 19:30 to 22:30. Take dinner at the house table and it is covered outright; take it anywhere else and you draw a per-adult credit against the bill. | Lunch, every drink, and anything above the credit. |
| Full board | Adds lunch 12:30 to 15:00 at the Overwater Bar, or a credit towards lunch elsewhere. | Every drink, and anything above the credit. |
The credits buy food and nothing else. Drinks are charged as you consume them on every plan, including full board. There is no all-inclusive tier on this island. On a page where the villas are priced the way these are, that is the single line most likely to change what you actually pay, and it is the one people most often miss when they compare Gili against an all-inclusive island elsewhere.
Dinner is a credit rather than a set menu, which cuts both ways. It means you are not trapped at one restaurant for a week. It also means a good night out still leaves something to settle, because you pay the difference above the credit. Children are given half the adult credit.
Children under seven eat free from the children’s menu on their parents’ plan.
Unused credit does not roll into the next day and there is no refund for a meal you skip. Everyone on the booking takes the same plan, so you cannot put one adult on breakfast and the other on full board. You can move up a plan after you arrive by paying a supplement for the rest of the stay.
Read the tax line carefully, because it changes halfway down the bill. Meal plan rates are quoted with service and tax already inside them. Excursions, diving and water sports are quoted before both, so the figure on the activities list is not the figure on your folio.
Restaurants and bars
| Venue | What it is |
|---|---|
| Kashiveli | The house table. Garden and local produce, and a night-market format at dinner |
| By The Sea | Japanese fusion. Hand rolls, sashimi, teppanyaki and a long sake list |
| Overwater Bar | Sunset cocktails, and where the theme nights are laid out |
| Fini Foni | Poolside by the tennis court. Handmade ice cream, coffee and snacks |
| The Underground Wine Cellar | Sommelier-led pairings below ground |
| The Organic Garden | Chef-led tours and gardenside tasting menus |
| Private dining | Off-menu beachside tables and one-off celebrations |
| In the villa | Served on your own deck, and drawn against your credit |
The theme nights are fixed to days of the week, and one of them matters to our readers. Sunday is Indian, cooked at a tandoor at the Overwater Bar. Tuesday is an Asian street market, Wednesday a churrascaria, Friday a Mediterranean spice souk. If you are bringing parents who want one proper Indian dinner in the week, arrive so that Sunday falls inside the stay.
Breakfast moves around the island rather than sitting in one room. On the beach most mornings, a champagne breakfast at a private stretch of sand on Monday and Friday, and a floating breakfast in your own pool on Wednesday for the categories that have one.
Restaurants close on a rota through the week and the rota moves with the season. Send us your dates and we will confirm which venues are open on them and hold the tables you want before you land.
Private and experiential dining sits outside every meal plan, as does anything at the wine cellar.
The water
Why we rate the reef 3 out of 5
The coral immediately off the island is largely bleached, and the resort does not trade on its house reef. The good snorkelling here is on the boat trips. We would rather you knew that now than discovered it with a mask on.
What is worth swimming to is the drop-off, about fifteen metres out from the reef edge: coral walls, small sharks, turtles and rays. The stretch between the two palm islets is the best of it, and visibility is at its best in the middle of the day.
The jetties are not alike and this is worth asking about. From one, the reef is a short swim. Another is shallow and calmer, which suits children, and rays and small sharks come in close enough to watch from the steps. Tell us which you would rather have and we will check what your villa sits on.
The marine biology team has been resident here since 2012 and runs the coral line programme, where fragments are grown on rope and replanted on damaged reef. You can tie your own line. It is honest, long-running work, and it is also not finished.
One animal a day, and the boat sets the minimum
Each snorkelling trip runs on one fixed day of the week. Manta on Sunday, sting ray Monday, shark Tuesday, nurse shark Wednesday, turtle Friday. The day you arrive therefore decides what you can realistically see, and on three nights you get two full days and two animals.
The minimum number of guests follows the boat, not the animal. A dhoni sails for two, so manta, sting ray, shark, sunset fishing and the dolphin cruise are reliable for a couple travelling alone. A speedboat needs four, which puts the turtle and nurse shark trips at the mercy of who else is on the island that week.
Diving here is priced in a way that is worth understanding before you compare islands. Full equipment, the boat fee and a guide sit inside the per-dive figure, where most resorts charge all three on top, and nitrox is complimentary. The per-dive figure steps down after six dives and again after eleven. The centre is Ocean Paradise and its instructors are PADI-certified.
The whale sharks are in South Ari, not here. From Gili that is a full-day private charter rather than a scheduled house trip. If swimming with a whale shark is the reason for the holiday, say so and we will show you an island that runs it from the doorstep instead.
Who it suits
✓Yes
- Your flight lands late or leaves at dawn. The boat runs at any hour, so neither end of the trip takes a night off you.
- You want two bedrooms over the water.Three categories do it: the Two-Bedroom Villa with Pool, the new Gili Lagoon Retreat, and the Private Reserve.
- You dive.Equipment, boat and guide are inside the per-dive figure, nitrox is complimentary, and the rate steps down at six dives and at eleven.
✕No
- You came to snorkel off your own steps. The coral at the island is largely bleached. What is good here is a boat ride, on a fixed day of the week.
- You pictured sand outside the bedroom door. There is no beach villa on this island in any category, and there is not going to be.
- You wanted to feel a long way from anywhere.Malé is twenty kilometres off. You will see the skyline and hear the aircraft.
Children and safety
- There is no kids club, and the resort is straight about it. No room, no all-day supervision, no drop-off. The resort’s own position is that because nothing is built on the beach the island itself is the playground, and that children should be let loose in the sand and the garden. That is a real answer and it suits some families completely. It is not a substitute for somewhere to leave a five-year-old for two hours.
- What runs instead is a rota, on a two-week cycle. Two sessions a day, late morning and late afternoon, each at a named venue: origami, mocktail making at the Overwater Bar, kids’ yoga, a treasure hunt, buggy driving, an onigiri class, cupcake decorating, gardening, sandcastles. Because the cycle runs a fortnight, a two-week stay does not repeat itself.
- In the water, the age gates are the usual ones. PADI Bubble Maker takes eight and nine year olds, Discover Scuba starts at ten, and the junior water ski trainer runs from three to eight. Tropicsurf teaches children in the lagoon and the nearest breaks are five minutes out by dhoni.
- Think about the deck before you book with a toddler. Every villa on this island stands over water and every villa has steps straight into the lagoon. There is no beach room where a two-year-old walks out onto sand. Families do bring small children here and enjoy it, but it is a decision to make deliberately rather than discover.
- Babysitting is arranged rather than included. It carries a charge and it wants notice. Tell us the ages of anyone travelling and we will have it requested before you leave India, along with cots, high chairs and anything dietary.

Things we would rather you heard from us
- The capital is close, and it is visible and audible. The skyline, the airport and passing shipping are all in view, aircraft run overhead through the day, and there is light on the horizon at night. It is the direct trade for the thirty-minute boat that saves your first and last nights. Guests consistently report the jetty nearest the airport as the worst of it and the sunset side as the calmest, so tell us if quiet is the priority.
- The house reef is the weak point. Largely bleached coral at the island, with the good water fifteen metres out at the drop-off or on the scheduled boat trips. Anyone booking this island primarily to snorkel from the villa should be looking at a different one, and we will say so rather than sell you this.
- Nothing to drink is included on any plan. Not with dinner, not house wine, not a beer at lunch. There is no all-inclusive tier here at all, and the meal credits cover food only. At this level of villa the bar bill is not a rounding error, so build it into the comparison before you decide between Gili and an all-inclusive island.
- There is no kids club. There is a good daily activity rota and there is paid babysitting, and there is no supervised room to leave a child in. Families told only the first half of that arrive expecting a kids club; families told only the second half write the island off unfairly. Both halves are true.
- Dinner is a credit, so the headline plan is not the whole dinner. Half board covers the house table outright and gives you a credit anywhere else. Eat across the island all week, as most guests do, and you pay the difference each night. It is a generous system and a flexible one. It is not the same as dinner being paid for.
Shall we price it for you?
Tell us your dates, who is travelling, and whether you want a pool. We will price two or three villas with the speedboat and every Maldivian tax already inside one figure, run the half board against full board arithmetic on how you actually eat, check which day your animal falls on, and put a villa position request on the booking if quiet matters. We reply within 24 hours.
