Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives Review: A Pool Villa Island 30 Minutes From Malé, With Surf but No House Reef

Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives is 30 minutes from Velana International Airport by the resort's own speedboat, and the boat runs around the clock, with no daylight window to work around. Every villa has a private pool, and Chicken's Break surf point is right beside the island. The compromise is under the water: there is no house reef, so good snorkelling means a boat trip.

What stood out on the visit

The 360 Degree World team visited Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives in September 2022 and found it modern without feeling sterile. Even the boat ride over was surprisingly pleasant, with proper seats, big windows and none of the feel of a cramped ferry.

The team's villa was tucked into lush greenery, so it felt private, yet the beach and lagoon were steps away. Inside, it was clean and airy, all glass and natural wood. Meals with ocean views became a habit.

The team's verdict: the resort gets the balance right, contemporary design meeting genuine island ease, with no fuss and well-thought-out comfort.

What the island is like

An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it, and a lagoon is the shallow, sheltered water inside that reef.

Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives sits in North Malé Atoll and takes up the whole of its island. It opened in 2021 and is partly man-made. In 2023 it cut its villas from 95 to 75, gave every beach villa and residence a private pool, and now has 39 villas on the beach and 36 over the water.

The centrepiece is a freshwater pool 150 metres long, with sunbeds, shaded cabanas, a jacuzzi and a family splash zone. There is also a retail village with boutiques and a photo studio, a library with ocean views and a private events venue called The Club.

Arriving

Guests arrive by the resort's own speedboat from Velana International Airport in Malé, about 30 minutes, with Wi-Fi on board. No seaplane or domestic flight is involved. Transfers run around the clock.

Seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only, so on a seaplane island a late arrival means a night in Malé. The speedboat has no such daylight limit. Boats leave to a schedule rather than on demand, so allow for a wait at the airport. Check landing times with the resort before booking international flights.

The villas

All 75 villas and residences have a private pool.

The Sunrise Beach Villa with Private Pool and the Sunset Beach Villa with Private Pool are about 152 square metres each, on the beach, the sunrise version among lush planting and the sunset version more secluded. The sunrise villa has a bathtub for two and sea views from the king-size bed. The Sunrise Water Villa with Private Pool and the Sunset Water Villa with Private Pool are larger, about 182 square metres, over the lagoon. Each of the four takes two adults and two children, or three adults.

For families and groups there are six types of residence, all on the beach. The Two Bedroom Beach Villa and Two Bedroom Beach Residence are about 400 square metres. The Three Bedroom Beach Residence is about 664 square metres, and the Three Bedroom Beach Retreat, about 764 square metres, adds indoor and outdoor dining and a wine cellar. The Four Bedroom Beach Villa and Four Bedroom Beach Residence are about 664 square metres, the residence with an infinity pool facing the ocean.

Eating and drinking

Food is the resort's other strength. The resort describes eight restaurants, three bars and a whisky and cigar lounge.

The Restaurant serves breakfast, then becomes three rooms at dinner: Fire, an American steakhouse; Ocean, seafood with a European touch; and Earth. Spice cooks Indian and Arabic food with kebabs, mezze, tandoor dishes and shawarma. East covers Thai, Chinese and Korean, and Med does Italian and Mediterranean, with pizzas and charcuterie.

Mar-Umi cooks Japanese-Peruvian food at dinner and South American food at lunch, and Teppanyaki by Mar-Umi is a separate oceanfront venue. The Library hosts chef's table and wine library dinners.

For drinks, The Bar sits by the pool with cocktails and live music, Raalhu Bar faces the sunset and looks over Chicken's Break, and the Cigar Lounge pours whiskies and cognacs with lagoon views. Not every restaurant opens every day, so ask the butler which are on.

The spa, sport and children

The SPA stands on its own small island, reached by a short wooden bridge, with eight treatment villas over the water. The fitness centre has trainers and classes, and the wellness team runs daily yoga, Zumba and boxing, with Pilates and aqua exercise in the big pool. Tennis, padel and futsal cover the courts.

Children have the Kuda Fiyo Kids Club, set in an island playground, with games, educational activities, creative workshops and a weekly round of treasure hunts, crab discovery, landscape painting and spoon races. Since July 2026 the club team also runs Chuk Chuk, a family adventure train that tours the island daily and ends at The Bar with popcorn and homemade ice cream. The big pool adds a family splash zone.

The water

A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives does not have one. The island is partly man-made, and the sea bed around it carries a lot of rubble and dead coral.

What guests do find close in: small coral patches near the water villas, a coral nursery reached by steps from the overwater villas, baby reef sharks at the edge of the lagoon, and plenty of fish. That is pleasant for an easy snorkel, not a reason to book. For good coral, guests go out by boat.

Diving and water sports run through MSTS, an operator based on the island, with trips to a manta point. The resort also runs dolphin and snorkelling cruises, sunset cruises and big game fishing.

The surf is the real draw. Chicken's Break is a surf point known for long left-hand barrels, and the resort offers lessons and equipment rental from May to October.

Where the compromises are

The reef is the main one. Anyone who wants to step off the villa onto living coral should look at another island.

Next is the setting. The airport is 30 minutes away and another island is in view, so the island does not feel remote.

Then there is the season. From May to October the surfers arrive for Chicken's Break, so those months are livelier.

Who will love it, and who won't

Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives suits couples who care about food and space, families who want a kids' club, a big pool and a short transfer, surfers from May to October, and anyone whose flight lands late in the day, since the speedboat runs around the clock. It suits keen snorkellers, and anyone after a remote, untouched island, considerably less well.
