Pullman Maldives Maamutaa is a big, green, lively island in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, far south of Malé, reached by a domestic flight of about 55 minutes and a 15-minute speedboat. Its house reef has coral in very good condition, and there is a villa with a bedroom below the water. The compromise is access: a flight, a boat and the wait between them at each end, and the reef rewards strong swimmers far more than hesitant ones.

What stood out on the visit

The 360 Degree World team visited Pullman Maldives Maamutaa in October 2022 and found it nails that sweet spot between fancy and chill. The whole place is lush and green, and guests can hop on a bike to explore the island whenever they feel like it. The team found the infinity pool massive, and sitting there with views over the lagoon pretty hard to beat.

The overwater villas struck them as gorgeous, and for anyone into that sort of thing, the underwater room, with the reef basically on its doorstep, they called absolutely wild. The beaches and lagoon are everything visitors dream the Maldives will be, but what really sets the island apart, in the team's view, is all the greenery dotted around. It does not feel like a sterile resort; it feels like a real tropical island. Everything is spread out nicely, with no rush or stress and a proper island vibe. For anyone after more than just a stunning villa to crash in, the team's verdict was that this place delivers.

What the island is like

An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it, and a lagoon is the shallow, sheltered water inside that reef. Gaafu Alifu is one of the southern atolls, far from the resorts clustered around Malé.

Pullman Maldives Maamutaa opened in September 2019 on a large island of about 18 hectares, with 122 villas on the beach and over the water. The interior is thick with vegetation around a natural lake. Distances are real, and guests can rent a bicycle to get around.

This is not a quiet island. A resident DJ and a live band play most evenings. On wet days the resort publishes a separate programme of cooking classes, spa sessions and indoor games alongside the usual one.

Arriving

A domestic flight is a short flight within the Maldives, from the domestic terminal at Velana International Airport. Pullman Maldives Maamutaa is reached by a domestic flight of about 55 minutes to Kooddoo Airport, then about 15 minutes by the resort's speedboat.

The resort also offers a private seaplane transfer, and seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only.

Domestic flights run to a fixed schedule, so the international landing time decides which domestic flight a guest can take, and the wait between the two adds to the journey. Check landing times with the resort before booking international flights, and ask what happens if the connection is missed.

Allow time between the international and domestic flights. On the way home the domestic schedule sets the departure from the island, so expect to leave earlier than the international flight time suggests, and reconfirm the return connection on arrival.

The villas

The Beach Villa, about 200 square metres, has a garden, a terrace, an indoor-outdoor bathroom and a path to the lagoon. The Beach Pool Villa, about 240 square metres, adds a private pool. The Ocean Villa, about 160 square metres, sits over the lagoon with glass floor panels, a net hammock and steps into the lagoon. The Ocean Pool Villa and Sunset Ocean Pool Villa, each about 165 square metres, add a private pool, and the Ocean Pool Suite adds a jacuzzi.

A practical warning for the overwater villas: do not jump in from the deck. The water below is shallow and the current runs.

Families have the Family Beach Villa, about 270 square metres, with a separate children's room with a bunk bed, and the Family Beach Pool Villa, about 300 square metres, with a pool. The Two Bedroom Beach Pool Villa, about 580 square metres, and the Two Bedroom Ocean Pool Villa suit groups, and the Four Bedroom Ocean Pool Retreat, about 1,474 square metres, has its own gym and spa room.

The Aqua Villa is built on two levels, with an overwater bedroom upstairs, a large pool with a private deck, and a master bedroom submerged below the surface, open to the marine life outside.

Eating and drinking

Mélange is the main restaurant, overlooking the beach, with six live cooking stations at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Phat Chameleon is the one vegetarian travellers should know about. Its cooking is Maldivian and Asian-inspired and plant-forward, with vegetarian and vegan dishes, and the restaurant sits in the island's organic vegetable garden. Souq Oven, over the water, serves Mediterranean food with an international wine cellar.

Sol Rising is the overwater poolside café and bar, used for breakfast and bar bites. The Hub is the beach bar beside twin pools, and Saffron Affair is the overwater sunset bar, with wines and tapas.

The spa, sport and children

Pullman Spa by Phytomer sits over the lagoon and opens from morning to evening. Its signature is the Maamutaa Massage, which the resort describes as ideal for jet-lag recovery.

Pullman Fit is the gym, open around the clock, and the Fit Trail is a purpose-built outdoor exercise circuit. There is one court for tennis, padel, pickleball and badminton, plus beach volleyball, aqua aerobics, Zumba and floating yoga.

For children, the kids' club, called Playground, has indoor play, a kids' pool and waterslides. Teenagers have Skillz Sports Centre, with snooker, table tennis, board games and a golf simulator, and there are two karaoke rooms.

The water

A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. At Pullman Maldives Maamutaa it lies off the sunset side, reached by a walk across the shallows and a swim over seagrass to the drop-off, about twenty minutes on a calm day. The hard and soft coral is in very good condition, and the resort lists green and hawksbill turtles and blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, with occasional eagle rays. The sunrise side faces the open ocean and holds mostly fish nurseries.

For anyone less confident in open water, the resort runs a guided house reef snorkel twice a week, and there are night snorkelling trips.

Diving is with Suvadiva Dive Centre, a PADI Five Star centre that teaches from beginner courses to Divemaster. It lists 26 dive sites in Gaafu Alifu, where divers can see up to 13 species of shark. Excursions include dolphin cruises, turtle snorkelling, sunset cruises and fishing, and trips to deserted islands.

Where the compromises are

The journey is the main one. A domestic flight, a boat and the waiting between them take a real share of a short trip, at both ends.

Next is the reef for weaker swimmers. The coral is excellent but takes a walk and a swim to reach, and the guided snorkel runs on two afternoons a week only.

Then there is energy. Music most evenings, a busy activity schedule and 122 villas make a lively island, not a hideaway.
