Grand Park Kodhipparu Review: A Strong House Reef 20 Minutes From Malé

Grand Park Kodhipparu is about 20 minutes from Velana International Airport by the resort's own speedboat, and the boat runs at any hour, so a late landing still ends on the island the same night. The house reef, with soft corals and reef sharks and morays on most days, is the main draw. The compromise comes with that closeness: the capital is in view and the flight path is near.

What stood out on the visit

The 360 Degree World team visited Grand Park Kodhipparu in July 2019, and it felt effortless, especially with just a short twenty-minute ride across the water from Malé. Morning coffee overlooking the shallow turquoise drop-off while watching baby blacktip sharks glide past the villa stairs was unforgettable. The house reef is lively, healthy and right at guests' feet.

The catch: being situated relatively close to the capital means guests occasionally hear faint engine hums on the horizon. It is best for travellers who want immediate, barefoot overwater living without burning half a day on long transfers.

What the island is like

An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it, and a lagoon is the shallow, sheltered water inside that reef.

Grand Park Kodhipparu sits in North Malé Atoll and opened in 2017, with interiors by the design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates. It has 120 beachfront and overwater villas, 65 of them with a private pool. The Beach Pool Villas look out over white sand, and a large infinity pool overlooks the ocean.

It is a lively island rather than a hushed one. The resort is built for couples and families alike, with a kids' club, a gym and a busy activity schedule. Check-in happens in the villa, and a lifestyle host looks after guests for the whole stay. Bicycles are provided for getting around.

Arriving

There is one way in: the resort's speedboat from Velana International Airport in Malé, about 20 minutes. A Grand Park Kodhipparu representative meets guests at the airport.

Seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only, so on a seaplane island a late arrival means a night in Malé. That does not apply at Grand Park Kodhipparu. The speedboat runs at any hour, so a late landing still reaches the villa, and an early flight home does not cost a final night. The standard boats run to a schedule rather than on demand, so allow for a wait at the airport.

The short ride is the quiet advantage of the place. On a three- or four-night trip, very little of the holiday goes on travelling.

The villas

Every villa except the Grand Residence takes up to three adults and a child.

The Lagoon Water Villa, about 80 square metres, stands over the calm lagoon, with glass floor panels to watch the marine life below, an overwater hammock and a bathtub. The Ocean Water Villa is the same size, with the hammock and direct access to the open ocean instead.

The Beach Pool Villa, about 78 square metres, has a private pool and steps straight onto the sand. It is the villa to choose with young children.

The Pool Water Villa, about 93 square metres, adds a private infinity pool to the overwater deck. The Reef Pool Water Villa is the same size and sits on the reef edge, so guests can swim or snorkel straight from the villa into the coral gardens.

At the top, the Grand Residence covers about 210 square metres over the water, with two bedrooms and an infinity pool, and takes up to six adults and two children.

Here, the villa category decides how close the reef is. From a Reef Pool Water Villa the drop-off is a few steps from the ladder, and it is the only category the resort lists with direct reef access.

Eating and drinking

The Edge is the main restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as an international buffet with Asian dishes and live cooking stations.

Breeze Poolside Dining & Bar sits by the pool with cabanas and a beach view, and runs from mid-morning until late with Asian, Mediterranean and comfort food.

Firedoor is the speciality restaurant, open for dinner only, on an overwater deck with glass floor panels. The kitchen cooks prime steaks and local seafood, finishing them on a Josper charcoal grill, with plant-based dishes on the menu too. It is the one restaurant to book before turning up.

Private dining, on the beach or elsewhere on the island, can be arranged.

The spa, yoga and children

The Spa at Grand Park Kodhipparu stands over the water, with seven treatment rooms looking out to the ocean, and has won spa awards in recent years. Massages, body wraps and facials are on the menu.

A resident yoga master leads group yoga twice a day, at sunrise and sunset. The Beach Club, next to the beach, holds the gym, the kids' club and a games room.

The kids' club runs a daily programme, with island leaf craft, water balloon piñatas and coffee painting among the activities. Children can also learn about the reef with the marine biologist, and diving for children is offered at the dive centre.

On the water there are kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and parasailing, and sunset boat trips leave in the evening.

The water

A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. At Grand Park Kodhipparu it is the main reason to come. The resort names four snorkel spots. The Short Jetty Drop-Off suits beginners and brings the bigger marine life. The Lagoon is calm water for sunrise photographs. Behind the Dive Centre is for confident snorkellers and freedivers, and the Coral Giants Zone is the place for turtles.

The reef holds soft corals, which are scarcer in the Maldives than most people assume, and reef sharks and morays turn up most days. Eagle rays, batfish, titan triggerfish, parrotfish and lionfish are all on the resort's list. The current drifts gently along the reef edge, and going with it is the nicest way to snorkel here. There are no lifeguards on duty, so check the tides before swimming out.

The resident marine biologist leads guided snorkels and oversees the resort's coral restoration programme, and hands-on coral growing for guests is on the way. The PADI dive centre runs courses for beginners and dives for experienced divers.

Where the compromises are

The first is the view. Malé is on the horizon, and on a clear night its lights show. The flight path is close, and on the 2019 visit faint engine hums carried from the horizon. Guests looking for an empty horizon will not find it here.

The second is the villa choice. Only the Reef Pool Water Villas have direct reef access, and that is the one thing that cannot be fixed after arrival.

The third is numbers. With 120 villas, a kids' club and a busy activity schedule, the island is sociable rather than secluded.

Who will love it, and who won't
