Amazing stay at Vakkaru

The stay we had at Vakkaru was beyond perfect. The staff was so nice, and helpful. The food was excellent and the surroundings was something taken out of a movie. I would recommend Vakkaru to everyone.

Expectations exceeded

Stayed at an amazing beach pool villa, that was impossible to fault. Visited all the restaurants and we were impressed with their very high standards in terms of food quality, variety and service. Hats off to Sato our butler, and to Ms Malati at Isoletta for being so attentive and making us feel at home. Likewise, we noticed a high level of professionalism and training in all our interactions with the property staff. Location wise this is an island resort where you can still feel a real sense of isolation and seclusion. All in all, our expectations were exceeded at Vakkaru, and can't do anything but recommend this resort to those who want to experience the true Maldivian luxury hospitality.

Fabulous Vakkaru

We had a wonderful 8 night stay at Vakkaru. Loved cycling round the island and the accommodation was lovely. We split our stay between a beach villa and a water villa. Both were great but we preferred the water villa for its large bathroom and beautiful views. The food in all 5 restaurants was great with an excellent variety of high quality choices. Our favourite was the lagoon bar. Snorkelling at the blue hole was fabulous - saw turtles, sharks and rays along with loads of other coloured fish. All the staff were so lovely, smiling and friendly. Our butler Madina was amazing. Just the right amount of attentive service. Would highly recommend this resort for its reef, service, food and rooms.

Vakkaru Maldives has two ways in, and the second one matters for Indian flights. The seaplane from Velana takes 30 minutes but needs you landed by 15:00. The domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a speedboat take about 50 minutes and still connect if you land by 16:20.

The island sits in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with 111 villas and residences along 1.6 km of beach and a strong house reef. It suits couples and families who want a wide choice of restaurants without a long transfer.

What you pay

Seven villas are priced on this page, from the Over Water Villa to the One Bedroom Overwater Pool Residence. Each price is four nights for two adults on half board, with the return transfer included.

The pool is the real step up over the water. The Over Water Villa has a large sundeck and no pool. The Overwater Pool Villa adds a 35 m² pool. On the beach, the Beach Pool Villa gives you 250 m² and its own stretch of sand, more room than any overwater villa short of a residence.

What's included, and what isn't

In the price: your villa for two for four nights, breakfast and dinner daily, and the return transfer. Tell us your dates and we will confirm the full figure, taxes included, before you book.

Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, drinks, lunch, the spa, diving and excursions, destination dining, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.

Who this isn't for

Anyone who wants a fixed bill. Half board covers two meals and no drinks. The resort sells a daily drinks package, and with several restaurants, a wine cellar and sandbank dinners on offer, the extras add up quickly.

Anyone landing at Velana late in the evening. Even the domestic route needs you on the ground by 16:20. Send us your flights before you book them.

Families: the Parrotfish Club takes children aged 3 to 12, from 08:30 to 18:00. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will confirm which villas take your party before you book.

House reef 3/5 Fine

You will enjoy it. You would not cross an atoll for it.

One good stretch rather than a reef you can circle, and the island is big enough that getting to it is a walk or a cycle. The northern side has the conventional drop-off and the better marine life, with nurse sharks reported daily by some guests, plus blacktips, turtles and octopus. The southern blue hole is small and rubbly and the northern one is mostly sand, so temper expectations there. Long-stay snorkellers rate the reef the weakest part of this resort and thin on fish by Baa standards. Wind spoils visibility often. Gear is free and the guided trips are charged.

Last arrival that works 15:00

Land at Velana after 15:00 and the last transfer of the day will have gone, which means a night in Malé before you reach the island.

There is a second way in. Domestic flight to Dharavandhoo + speedboat, about 50 min, for arrivals at Velana up to 16:20.
