Sun Siyam Romance

Sun Siyam Romance is the adults only island at Olhuveli, and you walk to it. A bridge links it to the rest of the resort, so you get a quiet island of your own and the run of a much larger one next door. Forty five minutes by speedboat from the airport, and the boats run at any hour.

The villas

Two categories, one hundred and eleven villas, and every one of them has its own pool. Both take two adults and no more. One king bed, no twin option, and no extra bed or rollaway in either.

• Romantic Beach Villa with Pool, 91 sq m on the sand with a private pool and low bushes screening the back of the villa. Seventy one of them, against forty over the water.
• Romantic Water Villa with Pool, 112 sq m over the lagoon with a pool on the deck and steps into the water. Forty of them, on two long arms reaching out from the island.

You can split the stay, two nights on the beach and two over the water. Ask us and we will price it either way round.

What this actually costs

Every price here is full board for two, with the return speedboat and every Maldivian tax already inside. That is breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Restaurant, forty per cent off the menu at the a la carte places here and across the bridge, and a fifty dollar spa credit per adult per stay. Indian TCS is added separately on the total invoice value.

Until the end of October the price also carries a dolphin cruise, a thali lunch at Namaste across the bridge, a forty five minute couples spa treatment, snorkelling gear from the dive centre and a floating breakfast in your pool. One of each per stay. From November it is the standard full board.

Going all inclusive is an upgrade on top of that rather than a plan of its own, and the supplement changes at the start of November. Tell us your dates and we will cost both so you can see the difference before you choose.

On the November dates onwards, booking sixty days ahead takes fifteen per cent off the villa rate and thirty days takes ten, which we apply when you book. That discount does not stack with the August to October offer, which is already discounted. The honeymoon extras need three nights.

The reef, and who this is not for

Be honest with yourself about the snorkelling. The coral off Romance is young and partly planted, and it is the one thing guests here say they expected more of.

What is reliable is the bridge. Rays and sharks gather under the lights after dark and people stand there watching for an hour. For a proper swim, walk across to the main island and get in by the dive centre jetty, where the coral is older and the turtles are.

Nobody under sixteen, so this is not the island for a family holiday. Olhuveli next door is, and we sell it. Christmas and New Year are not on the dropdown, because both nights carry a compulsory gala and no check-out is allowed on 30 or 31 December.
