Pullman Maldives Maamutaa

Pullman Maamutaa sits in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, about 370 km south of Malé. Reaching it takes a 55-minute domestic flight to Kooddoo and about fifteen minutes by speedboat, roughly 70 minutes door to door. That distance is the point. This far south the reefs carry a fraction of the boat traffic they do around Malé, and because the resort is all-inclusive throughout, the running costs that catch people out elsewhere largely disappear.

The island is unusual in one respect worth knowing about: 18 hectares of vegetation wrapped around a natural freshwater lake, which almost no Maldivian resort island has.

Getting there

Domestic flight from Velana International (MLE) to Kooddoo Airport (GKK), 55 minutes, then about fifteen minutes by speedboat to the island.

Two things follow. Domestic flights run to a fixed schedule, so a late international arrival into Malé can mean an overnight in the capital before you fly south, and the return leg needs the same buffer. Book a morning arrival from India and you are on the beach that afternoon.

What All-Inclusive actually covers

• All meals across Mélange, Sol Rising, Phat Chameleon and Souq Oven
• Premium spirits, house red and white, beers, cocktails and mocktails
• In-villa mini bar, replenished once daily
• One hour a day of non-motorised watersports, kayaking and paddleboarding, minimum age five
• Snorkelling gear, beach volleyball, tennis, padel, pickleball and badminton
• Sunrise yoga, aqua aerobics, Zumba and the 24-hour gym

What it does not cover: excursions, motorised watersports, spa treatments, babysitting and open-water diving. À la carte items ordered before check-in or after check-out are charged at menu price. At The Hub poolside bar the all-inclusive lunch menu is capped at three dishes per person between 11:00 and 14:00, and anything past that is charged.

Diving needs a valid licence and mandatory insurance under Maldivian regulations. Short-term cover is sold at the dive centre.

The villas

Seven categories, from the Beach Villa through to the Aqua Villa with a bedroom below the waterline. Every pool category gives you a private pool and an outdoor shower.

Ask for a sunset-facing villa by name. The west-facing terraces are the difference between a pleasant evening and the reason you came. The Aqua Villa is the resort's signature room and priced accordingly, so it is worth asking us to cost both and seeing the gap before you commit.

The house reef

Strong, and reachable from the beach rather than by boat. The drop-off inside the atoll is the stretch worth swimming out to. Guests regularly report turtles, reef sharks and rays without leaving the island. Snorkelling has a minimum age of five, and there is a PADI dive centre on site.

Who this isn't for

Short trips. The domestic flight adds real hours in each direction, and on three nights you lose most of two days to transit. Five nights is the sensible minimum here.

Anyone after a small, quiet island. This is 18 hectares with well over a hundred villas, a resident DJ and a live band most evenings. It has energy, which is exactly why many guests choose it, but you will not feel alone.

Anyone set on a seaplane arrival. This is a domestic flight, and the view on the way in is not the same.
