Kandima Maldives Review: A Three-Kilometre Island Built for Doing Things

Kandima Maldives sits on an island roughly three kilometres long in Dhaalu Atoll, a domestic flight and a short speedboat ride from Malé, about 50 minutes of travel in all. It is built for activity: a go-kart track, a bowling alley, a kids' club, sports courts and a long pool. The compromise is the water. There is no snorkelling off the beach, and the reef is a boat ride away.

What stood out on the visit

The 360 Degree World team visited Kandima Maldives in October 2022 and found a long island, about three kilometres end to end, where that scale shapes the stay. Guests cycle to dinner, the pool and the sports fields rather than stepping out to them. It is busy and sociable by design, with tennis, a football pitch, an art studio and a very large pool.

There is no snorkelling off the beach. The reef is reached by a boat to a platform at the reef edge, and the boat does not run across the middle of the day. The lagoon is the better water for small children: shallow and calm, with baby sharks and rays in the shallows. The team's advice is to bring water shoes, as there is dead coral near the shore.

Getting there is a domestic flight to Dhaalu and a short boat, about fifty minutes of travelling in all.

The team's verdict: it suits families with young children, and anyone who wants plenty to do. It is not for anyone after a small, quiet island or a reef from the beach.

What the island is like

An atoll is a ring of coral reef with islands scattered around it, and a lagoon is the shallow, sheltered water inside that reef. Dhaalu Atoll lies south of Malé.

Kandima Maldives runs along roughly three kilometres of island, with studios and villas along the beach and a jetty over the lagoon. Guests get around by bicycle or on the Kandima Express, a hop-on, hop-off bus.

Recent additions are Fast Track, an oceanfront electric go-kart circuit of about 500 metres, opened in November 2024, and PlaySpace, a games hub with bowling, karaoke, virtual reality and escape rooms, launched in July 2025.

The island also has the Medical Klinic, an in-house hospital available to guests around the clock, with doctors from Germany, a dentist and a decompression chamber for divers.

Arriving

There are two ways in from Velana International Airport in Malé, where a Kandima Airport Buddy meets guests.

The main route is a domestic flight, a short hop from Velana to Dhaalu Airport, followed by a speedboat to the resort. It comes to about 50 minutes of travel in all, before any waiting time, and it serves guests landing outside seaplane hours.

The second route is a seaplane straight to the Kandima Maldives jetty. Seaplanes in the Maldives fly in daylight only, so this option suits daytime arrivals, and seaplane flights can stop briefly at other islands on the way.

Transfers are run by a third party, and timings can change. The resort asks for flight details at least seven days ahead. Check landing times with the resort before booking international flights, and do the same for the flight home.

The villas

The Beach Studio and the Sky Studio share two-storey buildings along the main beach. Each has about 40 square metres inside plus a private terrace or balcony. The Sky Studio is the upper floor, with a balcony swing and ocean views, and either studio takes two adults and two children, or four adults. For larger families, the 2 Bedroom Family Sky Suites join two bedrooms through a lounge area.

The Beach Villa with Swirl Pool, about 97 square metres in all, sits on the main beach with a swirl pool (the resort's name for a jacuzzi) and a semi-outdoor bathroom. The Sunrise and Sunset Beach Pool Villas with Swirl Pool sit on the main beach, each with its own swirl pool, a deck and views of the Indian Ocean.

Over the water, the Aqua Villa, about 73 square metres, has a private sundeck with direct access to the lagoon. The Aqua Villa with Swirl Pool is the same size with a swirl pool on the deck. The Ocean Pool Villa adds a private pool on its overwater deck, and the Sunset Aqua Pool Suite, at the far tip of the Aqua Villa jetty, has a separate living area and an infinity pool on its deck.

Eating and drinking

Kandima Maldives lists ten restaurants and bars.

Flavour and Zest is the main food hall, an international buffet with live cooking stations and a kids' corner. Azure, on the beachfront, cooks Mediterranean food, seafood, tapas, steaks and pizza. Smoked has an open barbecue kitchen and serves steaks, ribs, fish, vegetarian dishes and teppanyaki. Sea Dragon is the Asian fusion seafood restaurant, with fish from Dhaalu Atoll and lobster and crab from display tanks.

Aroma serves specialty coffee over a natural lake, and Deli sells sandwiches, salads and pastries. Breeze Pool Bar is the sunset spot, with cocktails, shisha, live bands and DJs. Beach Club has swim-up service and cabanas, and the Forbidden Bar is a neon-lit cocktail bar entered through a psychedelic tunnel. Destination Dining sets up beach barbecues and private dinners.

The spa, sport and children

esKape Spa offers scrubs, massages and express treatments, with a steam room and a plunge pool. BURN Fitness Centre is open 24 hours, with its own pool and classes from aerial yoga to boxing.

Sport sits at the centre of Kandima Maldives. The Sports Arena has tennis, badminton and beach volleyball courts and a football field, and Breeze Pool is, in the resort's own words, one of the longest swimming pools in the Maldives. KULA Art Studio runs painting and craft sessions with resident artists. Fast Track and PlaySpace add go-karting and indoor games.

Kandiland is the kids' club, run by a multilingual team of certified child carers. It runs a daily programme of arts and crafts, games and outdoor play, and there is a water play zone. Babysitting is available.

The water

A house reef is the coral reef you can swim to from the resort itself. At Kandima Maldives it does not quite work that way. There is no snorkelling off the beach. The reef sits about 500 metres out, and guests reach it by a complimentary boat to a snorkelling platform at the reef edge. The boat runs six times a day, three times in the morning and three in the afternoon, with nothing across the middle of the day. Guests who make the trip see turtles, coral and baby sharks, though several report coral bleaching.

The lagoon is the better story. It is shallow, clear and calm, which suits toddlers, and baby sharks and rays swim through the shallows. There is dead coral on the seabed near the shore, so water shoes help.

Aquaholics, the dive and water sports centre, runs PADI dive courses, parasailing, windsurfing, jet skis and Seabob. Excursions include turtle quests, sunset cruises and fishing trips.

Where the compromises are

The reef is the main one. Snorkellers who want to step off the beach onto coral will be disappointed, and the boat timetable shapes the day for anyone who wants to snorkel.

The other is scale. Three kilometres means cycling or riding the bus everywhere, and the island is busy and lively rather than hushed.

Who will love it, and who won't

Kandima Maldives suits families with young children, groups of friends and couples who want plenty to do: a kids' club, sports courts, a go-kart track, ten places to eat and drink, and a calm lagoon for toddlers. It suits anyone after a small, quiet island, or a reef straight off the beach, much less well.
