At Sun Siyam Iru Veli the house reef runs all the way round the island, so you walk in from the beach or step down off an overwater deck, with no boat to catch. Guests report blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, manta rays and turtles, and a lifeguard will take nervous swimmers out.

That changes the villa decision. On most islands a water villa buys you the reef. Here it mostly buys the view, so a beach villa gives up very little. All 125 villas have their own pool, in Dhaalu Atoll, 45 minutes by seaplane from Velana.

What you pay

Pick your dates and a villa and the price is the whole stay for two: the villa, the meal plan, the return seaplane and every Maldivian tax, green tax included.

Stays to 31 October are a half board offer. Book by 31 October. Take the Family Beach Villa: it is priced exactly like the Beach Villa, ₹288,200 for four nights, for a larger villa. From November it is ₹187,700 more over the same four nights.

From November the plan is the resort's 24-hour all inclusive dine around. Four nights in a Beach Villa from 1 November to 22 December are ₹616,400, with every meal and drink inside.

On those stays, book sixty days ahead and the resort takes fifteen per cent off the villa, or ten per cent at thirty days. It turns on the day you book, so the prices on this page are before it. We apply it.

What's included, and what isn't

In the price: your villa for two, the return seaplane, every Maldivian tax including green tax, and the meal plan for your dates. In October that is breakfast and dinner, plus a floating breakfast, a sixty-minute massage for two and a candlelit dinner. From November it is meals and drinks around the clock at Aqua Orange, Grouper Grill, Roma and the bars.

Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, Teppanyaki and the Wine Cellar, spa and excursions outside the offer, the compulsory Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.

Who this isn't for

Families who want a big-island programme. There is the Turtle Kidz Club for ages three to eleven and a family pool, but no water park or football pitch. Those are on a different Sun Siyam island, and we sell that too.

Toddlers in a water villa. The overwater villas are not recommended for young children because of the layout. Here a beach villa still puts you on the reef.

Anyone landing at Velana after 15:30. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so a later arrival means a night in Malé first. Going home, a flight before 09:00 means travelling back the afternoon before.

Before you book

23 December to 10 January is not priced on this page. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve carry compulsory gala dinners and nobody checks out on 30 or 31 December. We can still book it.

Also not priced here: the new Sunset Beach Villa with Pool and the two two-bedroom residences, one on the beach and one over the water. We can book all three.

On October stays, two teenagers under sixteen stay and eat free when they share with two adults. Send your flight details ten days ahead to hold the seaplane seats, and allow 20 kg checked and 5 kg cabin.

House reef 5/5 Exceptional

Live coral within swimming distance of the beach, reliably good fish life, safe entry.

Iru Veli has one of the better house reefs we sell. It rings the island, so you get in from the beach or straight off an overwater deck rather than taking a boat out to it. Guests report blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, manta rays, turtles and clouds of reef fish, and describe the coral as in good condition and recovering in many places rather than uniformly across the reef. Dolphins pass often enough that a villa category is named after them. A lifeguard will take nervous snorkellers out. A beach villa gives up very little here, which is unusual.

Land at Velana after 15:30 and the last transfer of the day will have gone, which means a night in Malé before you reach the island.

Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so an arrival after 15:30 means a night in Male. Sun Siyam has its own lounge at the airport with refreshments and showers, and the resort aims to fly you out within three hours of check-in at the seaplane terminal. Flight details are needed ten days ahead to hold the seats. Anyone on an international flight leaving Male before 09:00 travels back the previous afternoon. Baggage is 20 kg checked plus 5 kg cabin.

Where is Sun Siyam Iru Veli? +
Iru Veli is in South Nilandhe Atoll, also called Dhaalu, about 153 km south-west of Male. It is a small island by Maldivian standards with 125 villas, every single one of which has its own private pool, and it is built around couples and honeymooners rather than crowds.
How do I get to Iru Veli? +
Fly into Velana International Airport in Male and take a 45-minute seaplane. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so you need to land before 15:30 to reach the island the same afternoon. Sun Siyam has its own lounge at the airport with refreshments and showers, and the resort aims to fly you out within three hours of check-in at the seaplane terminal.
Is the house reef any good? +
It is one of the better ones we sell. The reef rings the island, so you get in from the beach or straight off an overwater deck rather than taking a boat out to it. Guests report blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, manta rays, turtles and clouds of reef fish, and describe the coral as in good condition and recovering in many places. A lifeguard will take nervous snorkellers out.
What is included in the price shown? +
It depends which dates you pick, and the dropdown says which. September and October are a short offer on half board, with return seaplane transfers and several extras already inside. From November the price is the resort's 24-hour all-inclusive dine-around. Both have the return seaplane and every Maldivian tax inside. Indian TCS is added separately on the total invoice value, and the current rate is on our Taxes and TCS page.
What does the 24-hour all-inclusive cover? +
Meals and drinks across Aqua Orange, the all-day buffet, Grouper Grill for seafood, Roma for Mediterranean cooking overwater, and the bars, running around the clock rather than to set meal times. Teppanyaki, which seats eight, and the overwater Wine Cellar sit outside the plan and are charged.
What comes with the September and October offer? +
Half board and return seaplane transfers for two, plus a floating breakfast once during the stay, a sixty-minute massage for two at the Ocean Spa and a candlelit set-menu dinner. Two teenagers under sixteen stay and eat free when they share with two paying adults. The offer stops at the end of October.
Is Iru Veli good for families? +
It works for families but it is not built around them. The Turtle Kidz Club takes children from three to eleven and runs from nine until five, there is a family pool and a separate adults-only pool, and the Family Beach Villa is sized for four. Anyone wanting a water park or a football pitch should look at a bigger island. The overwater villas are not recommended for young children.
What is there for honeymooners? +
A bottle of sparkling wine and a fruit basket on arrival, an in-villa bubble bath, in-villa breakfast for two once during the stay, a turndown with bed decoration on the first night and a celebration cake. You need at least three nights and a marriage certificate dated within the past twelve months at check-in.
Can we book Christmas or New Year? +
Not from the dropdown, which stops on 22 December and picks up again on 11 January. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve carry compulsory gala dinners, regular menus and in-villa dining are withdrawn on those nights, and no check-out is permitted on 30 or 31 December. Ask us and we will price those dates individually.
