Simply the best trip

I stayed in a water villa that felt incredibly cosy, with views that were simply spectacular. One of the most memorable highlights of my trip was exploring the reef and seeing the vibrant corals up close—it was truly breathtaking. The food was exceptional throughout my stay, and I can honestly say I had the best cheesecake there. What made the experience even more special was the staff, who were always warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. It was an unforgettable getaway, and I would absolutely love to return again.

Oceanfront Bliss with Unforgettable Snorkeling

Had an amazing stay at this resort. The water villa was a dream—waking up to stunning ocean views and a beautiful sunrise every morning was unforgettable. The scenery all around was breathtaking, with a calm and relaxing vibe throughout. The desserts at every meal were a real highlight—delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were warm and friendly, and the snorkelling experience was incredible, with vibrant reefs and plenty of colorful fish. Would definitely come back!

The ambiance of this island resort is truly top notch! Especially being located in South Ari Atoll the island's house reef is excellent and rich. Rooms are cosy, with all villas set on the lagoon with exceptional view to the Indian Ocean. Most importantly the hospitality and service offered at the resort was remarkable with friendly staffs. With world-class international cuisine, fusion creations and authentic Maldivian flavours it made the stay even more enjoyable. I simply loved it!

Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat has its house reef 50 metres off the beach, in South Ari Atoll, the stretch of the Maldives known for whale sharks. The boat out to the whale shark water takes about twenty minutes.

There are thirty villas, ten on the beach and twenty over the water, with one restaurant and one bar. It is a small, quiet island for snorkellers and divers, not for anyone who wants a new restaurant every night.

What you pay

Drift Thelu Veliga is priced on request. Pick the Beach Villa or the Water Villa and ask us. We send back the whole stay for your dates: the villa, breakfast and dinner, the return transfer and every tax.

The Water Villa is the bigger of the two. It is 54 m² against 39 m², with a bathtub, a separate shower and a sun deck over the lagoon. The Beach Villa has a semi-outdoor shower and a terrace that opens onto the sand.

The transfer changes the total. The seaplane takes 35 minutes. The other way in is a 35-minute domestic flight to Maamigili and a 30-minute speedboat. We price whichever one fits your flights.

What's included, and what isn't

In the price: your villa for two, breakfast and dinner, the return transfer you choose, Wi-Fi across the island including your villa, and every Maldivian tax including green tax.

Not in the price: your international flights, travel insurance, lunch and drinks, diving, motorised water sports, boat trips such as sunset fishing, dolphin cruises and desert island picnics, private dinners and ceremonies, Indian TCS, and anything not named above.

Who this isn't for

Anyone who needs choice at dinner. There is one open-air restaurant seating 64 and a beachfront lounge and bar. Over a week you will know the menu well.

Anyone landing at Velana after 15:00. The seaplane flies in daylight only, and the last flight to Maamigili leaves Velana at 17:00, so the domestic route buys very little extra time. A later landing means a night in Malé first. Send us your flights and we will check.

Families who want a kids' club. Babysitting is available on request. Ask us what else runs for children on your dates before you book.

Before you book

The reef is the reason to come. At 50 metres from the beach you swim to it rather than wait for a boat. The dive centre runs lessons, certifications and guided trips, and the nearest dive site, Theluveligau Giri, is ten minutes away.

Whale sharks are seasonal and never guaranteed. Twenty minutes by speedboat puts Drift Thelu Veliga close to them, but nobody can promise a sighting on a given morning.

Small practical things. In-villa dining runs from 08:00 to 22:00. Plugs are European three-pin at 220V. MasterCard, Visa and Amex are accepted. A visit to a local village needs shoulders and knees covered.

Worth choosing the resort for. One or two caveats on entry point or current.

The reef rings this small island, so on a calm day you can snorkel most of the way round without taking a boat. The swim out is the catch: the drop-off sits about 150 metres off the beach and the dependable way through the shallows is the cut by the jetty, so the eastern water villas are the ones to ask for. Guests report whitetips, turtles, eagle rays and dense fish, with South Ari's whale sharks a short boat ride out. Coral here was badly damaged a decade ago and is still rebuilding, and a cross-current runs on the way out.

How do I get to Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat? +

There are two ways to reach the island. You can take a 35-minute seaplane journey from Malé International Airport, or a 35-minute domestic flight from Malé International to Maamigili Local Airport followed by a 30-minute speedboat transfer.

Where is Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat located? +

The resort is located 90 kilometres southwest of Malé, in the South Ari Atoll — one of the Maldives' most celebrated atolls, renowned for whale shark sightings and vibrant marine life.

The resort has an open-air restaurant seating up to 64 guests, serving authentic and locally inspired dishes using the freshest ingredients. The resort offers a wide range of motorised and non-motorised water sports including snorkelling, wind surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, catamaran sailing, water skiing, kite surfing, wake boarding, and scuba diving. Shared experiences include sunset fishing, sunrise breakfast cruises, dhoni snorkelling trips, snorkelling and picnic on a desert island, and local village discovery.

What diving experiences are available? +

A specialised dive centre offers lessons, certifications, and guided diving trips. The House Reef is just 50 metres from the beach, and whale shark spotting is 20 minutes away by speedboat. Popular dive sites nearby range from 10 minutes (Theluveligau Giri) to 1 hour 20 minutes (Macchafushi Rock).

Are there romantic experiences for couples? +

Yes — Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat offers a range of romantic experiences including a Blessing & Renewal of Vows Ceremony on the beach or a private sandbank ($2,500 per couple), romantic beach dinners ($250), private sunset and dolphin cruises, in-villa champagne breakfasts, and sandbank picnics. All prices are in USD inclusive of service charge and GST. Correct in August 2026; we confirm when we quote.

What are the practical details I should know? +

The island uses 220V, 50Hz electricity with European 3-pin plugs. Wi-Fi is available across the island including in-villa. Credit cards accepted include MasterCard, Visa, and Amex.
