Rajasthan

Rajasthan, the largest state of India was formed on March 1949 with Jaipur as the state capital. Once known as the ‘Land of the Kings’, the state retains the glory and richness of the times with its marvelous monuments, rich customs and traditions. It covers most of the area of the Great Indian Desert that has an edge running parallel to the Sutlej- Indus River Valley along its border with Pakistan.

Demographics

Rajasthan has a majority of 88% Hindu population and a minority of Muslims, Sikhs and Jains. Rajasthani state is also populated by Sindhi who came to Rajastan from Sindh province during the Indo-Pakistan separation. The mother tongue of the majority of people in Rajasthan is Rajasthani but Hindi is also widely spoken. Some other languages widely used in Rajasthan are Sindhi and Punjabi.

Geography

The main geographic features of Rajasthan are Thar Desert and the Aravalli Range that runs through the state from south-west to North-east almost from one end to other. The North-western part of India that is mostly covered by Thar Desert receives scanty rainfall. The Aravalli Range and the land to the east and south east of the range are generally more fertile, better watered and has diversified topography. This region is home to many deciduous forests with tropical dry forests that include Teak and Acacia.

Climate

Rajasthan experiences varied climatic conditions with summers touching to 48 degree C and winters dropping to nearly freezing point. Remember summer in Rajasthan is something tough and unbearable. In winter, the days are sunny and pleasant while nights can be chilly. If you are seeking for some comfort level or craving for some sightseeing, the period between October to March is by far the best time to visit Rajasthan.

Flora and Fauna

Although large percentage of the total area is desert and even though there is little forest cover, Rajasthan has rich and varied flora and fauna. Some wildlife species that are fast vanishing from other areas like blackbuck, Great Indian Bustard, Indian wild Ass and rare migratory birds are still found in good numbers in the Wildlife reserves of Rajasthan.

Major Attractions

Rajasthan is the only land where much of the medieval character has been retained through magnificent forts, palaces and havellis. As you visit Rajasthan many stories of romance and valor, once heard or read will start ringing true. You will discover the remains of the mediaeval times blending perfectly with modern architectures. The major attractions of Rajasthan include The Lake Palace, The city palace, Umaid Bhavan Palace, Ajmer-e-sharif, Jaisalmer Fort, Pushkar, Dilwara Temple and other must see places.

Tips

- Government licensed guide is always recommended on your visit to various places of tourist attractions in Rajasthan.
- As summers are very hot, the best time to visit this state is between October and February.
- Try to maintain temple decorum. Keep your pets and shoes outside whenever you are entering a Hindu hotel.
- Exchange currency only at banks or authorized moneychangers.
- Lock your room and luggage carefully before going out.
- Avoid drinking water outside. Carry your own bottle or rely on packaged mineral water.
